Hey turned out great!!!! question though: Would these rolls/sheets of acetate be the right stuff to use?

And what thickness and how much would i want to buy?

these: http://cgi.ebay.com/10-Clear-Acetat...ultDomain_0&hash=item5adb4043e0#ht_500wt_1154

http://www.creativecoldsnow.com/bro...-sheet-25x40/4,7481.html?&message=addedtocart (shipping is 8 dollars for this one)

And here is just a random website with a big list of different kinds- http://www.creativecoldsnow.com/search.htm

Sorry if that seemed scatterbrained... i'm really tired hahahah

Thanks a million!!!

I would say you want the .01 thickness, if you get too thin then you won't be able to score the piece and will keep cutting through it on accident or it will break through after scoring when you bend it.

As for size the 8 1/2 x 11 won't be big enough so definitely look for larger sheets are even a roll. They may cost a little more but you will have extra for when you mess up the first one (i cut out about three before i got the cut i wanted and the spray to work right)

Good luck!!!!

will you get the same effect as seans visor with a few leds inside the helmet?

Well the VHT niteshades stuff is made to let light through (it is used to darken tail lights so that you can see the light when it is on but not when it is off) so I am pretty sure this will work that way. I don't have time to play with it now, but I will when I get back from work around 2-3ish US eastern, look for a post on it around then.

Edit: I put a light behind the visor and turned it on. It showed through pretty well, sorry I don't have any leds to hook up in there atm, but it shows the concept. Pics are on the front page.

Ok awesome!!! sorry bout the late response but thanks a million!!! I'll order some tonight!!! :)

Hooray!

Just curious would this stuff be good to vacuform with?

I'm not really an expert on vacuum forming, but I don't think it should be a problem. You will have to be careful with the temp of the oven and how long it is in there, especially if it is that thin.

I have tried vacuum forming before with thicker plastics and had a problem heating them up evenly enough to get a good form. The thinner stuff may be better, but I couldn't say for sure.

Thanks I just figure it'd be a good way to make the viser

Vacuum forming is a great way to make a visor, but it is a tough investment to build a vac form table and it takes quite a bit of practice to learn how to do it correctly, that is why I made this tutorial, for people who wanted a simpler solution to the visor forming problem

time to stop lurking after all these years i suppose :)

Got my ODST helm ready for this part aside from an issue cutting the visor out i left in the pep (my tool for it died... tis what i get for using a 20 year old one thats been rotting in a barn) when i built the original and glassed it.

and finding this thread gave me a massive load of hope for the visor :) I began the project thinking i was gonna hafta butcher a couple of motorcycle helmet visors to get it done.

thanks a ton for the info!

ya. you can find anything on the internet.

i found instructions on how to make a lego ODST SONYIEV pod.

gonna do that one today XD
