custom ODST armor WIP. (my first build)

    #1
    Hello everyone!

I have been hanging around this place for a couple years, but never made an account until now or seriously considered building anything. I recently finished my Freshman year of college (for aerospace engineering) and now have the time and resources to attempt a build. I was having some trouble deciding what I wanted to try out, but in the end I settled for ODST.

I'm not going to lie, I am also a pretty large person (280 lbs). This alone is going to provide some scaling/sizing issues with the armor, but I feel I can work around it with enough time and effort (and foam adjustments).

Here is what I have so far:

So as you can see, I have the upper chest plate, helmet, and one shoulder resined. The shoulder has also been glassed. I am working on pepping the right middle plate. Next will be the other shoulder and left middle plate. I may start work on my weapon (either a DMR or sniper) soon as well.

Also, the helmet is taking an unusually long time to cure. Would you guys happen to know why?

    Thoughts/constructive criticism is welcome.

Just a quick update on my progress. Due to it raining quite a bit today, my work time was cut short

I did, however, manage to get the main chest plate glassed. Here's a picture:

What do you guys think I can improve on?

    P.S.

I also learned the hard way that resin and acetone do NOT mix with red solo cups.

to be quite honest, your pep work isnt the cleanest of the bunch. i would also suggest using rondo and bondo to bring th piece together, keep up the work, cant wait to see more updates!!

Thanks for the feedback. Ya, my pep work probably isn't the cleanest. I did a HD ODST helm for my first one ever... probably should have started off a little easier. lol

I should be able to get quite a bit done today, I'll post pictures later.

Yeah, the helmets can be just a pain in general when you're starting out.
It's coming along fairly well for a first build. Bravo on the helmet, even if it is a little warped. I know it can be pretty difficult working with all those little folds, especially on one of those HD helmets. I did Kirrou's tester helmet and had serious scaling issues, but yours looks like it fits pretty well. If you want, you should find the aforementioned helmet on Halo costuming wiki's pep file index (http://halocostuming.wikia.com/wiki/Pepakura_File_Index). It's great to start out with a lower-res helmet, just to get an idea of how the HD one should be scaled. It'll also give you some practice with fixing warping and things like that (hence why it's called the 'tester' helmet).

I look forward to seeing further progress!

Sorry for the long break, I've had other things to attend to. Either way, I'm back at it.

So I've been working on my weapon to go with the ODST armor, and heres what I've got so far. The main shape is all there, but i still need to add in the detail work and some accessories. Also, I ended up deciding on the sniper rifle.

            It's coming along. Any thoughts?

              My thoughts are:
              1) That is an awesome sniper rifle you've got going there, and
              2) I like the use of that Nerf gun there! Maybe I'll have to do something like that with mine...

I'm itching to see it detailed...

After a couple more hours of work on my sniper, here's the results:

It's at about 80% completion. I'm also trying out a custom paint job on it, I wanted to stray a bit from the mainly gray model you usually see.

As for the optics, this is what I'll be using. I'm picking it up for $18 at Walmart tomorrow.

                How's it look?
