So last summer / fall, I started work on Hugh's ODST models. The first piece completed was the shin:

If you look on the side view of the shin, you'll notice a black line. This is drawn on both sides for the seperation point. My plan is to cut along this line after slushing the inside, building up extra material along the edges of the back half, and creating a face for the front half to slide along, essentially making the piece adjustable. I really don't want to do this twice, so my goal is to mold and cast it..............don't know for sure what to do there yet.

Next up was the torso, which went together very well:

That is what approximately 120 small binder clips look like when they hold together an entire model.

Things sat pretty idle through the winter, but then as Hugh started to make great progress on his build, that gave me a second wind. Within the last two weeks, I've made a lot progress considering. Both shoulders and helmet are built, which turned out great in my opinion:

The top of the dome went together not as I was expecting it to, but I think it worked out. Following the lines to make it line up properly at the ends, there are actually ridges along the top, rather than grooves, but I really like the way it looks. There are about 50 clips inside holding it together, in the blocks that I wanted. Certain parts are glued together, but it still leaves about 6 pieces to the helmet, allowing me to smooth some of the trickier areas around the helmet in pieces. On the shoulders, rather than build that elevated details on the upper portion, I cut the pieces out of about 3/16" mat board, and glued accordingly. That also helped to keep those faces flat.

Here is how everything looks together so far:

5519995405_4758a2e04a_m.jpg 5519997239_5fd32f48f7_m.jpg

I'm working on the resin phase of what is built so that I can hurry up and get it sealed before the next cold snap here in Ohio, because we all know one is coming. On a side note, I've also got the soft armor shoulder bases built using the 1/2" foam, as well as the bicep pieces.

Let me know you think, any and all feedback is welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Double post for update:

I've made a little bit more progress on the build so far. I've started working on the various "chest packs" to go on the outside of the torso.

As you can see, more binder clips. I'm trying to actually keep some of the parts broken up into sections to give it more of an "assembled" appearance once finished, being able to see all of the smaller components.

5579536332_d941edf41c_m.jpg 5579537116_3d193c096e_m.jpg

Some more work on the helmet. I wanted to be sure and resin along the inside edges of the different components that I'm going for, that way when I start slushing, or mudding the inside, I do it section by section without the edges wrinkling from the extreme heat that rondo creates, and then take it apart.

I also started getting some rondo into the shin and knee pieces. Safety first!!

Questions or comments are always welcome, and as always, thanks for looking!!

PERFECT

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any of your work all this time. It's because you went stealth mode :p

Great work Matt. I like how you showed pics of the clips, that's exactly what I did. This should definitely make it easier for others to understand how to build these parts.

That is some outstanding work!

I am really impressed with the neatness of the builds... clean.... nice work!

Keep it up... I want to see where this one goes!

Good stuff!

wow really good so far. The ODST model is off te Reach ODSTs right? If so, can you link me to the pepukura files? I plan to make one too :D

Thanks for the comments everybody, it definitely helps provide inspiration to keep going. Things are sitting pretty idle right now due to the weather conditions here in Ohio. 70 one day, 40 the next, typical April weather. I've got the chest piece resined, and hoping for a little break in the weather so I can get about 2 or 3 days of good progress.

Actually, these are based on the the ODST's from Halo 3, not Halo 3:ODST. Any models you are looking for can be found in Hugh's ODST thread. He has a link in his signature, located in post #4 above.

thanks you :D *gives cookie*

Very nice work here Matt. I'm just wondering what proportions you used for the Rondo. I'm going to be using a combination of Rondo and glass on the inside of my armor and was looking for some experienced recommendations. Is a 50/50 mix good or should it be thinner? Should I be going for a milky consistency or a bit thicker? Sorry, but I read through several posts and they seemed a bit contradictory... Thanks for any help you will give.

I think of it as a trial and error to find what you like on the rondo ratio. I use 2/3 bondo 1/3 resin. But, thats just me.

Well, things are still sitting a little still. I've got a few more parts built, but nothing done on the finishing side. With all of the rain here in Ohio, it's just stopped everything.

@Erikm: it needs to be around the consistency of pudding, with the color of a chocolate milkshake. As Arioch said, it really is trial and error.

I don't know how I missed this, But it's looking great. Love the detail that you're putting into you're pep.

Thanks for the comments guys. It's been a long idle summer, dog-gone it was busy!! And now, it's starting to cool off again. I have managed to make some more progress on this thing, and changed things around a little bit.

For starters, I decided that I wanted the core to be foam, mainly for comfort and flexibility:

I purchased a can of the liquid Plasti-dip and proceeded to brush some thicker layers onto the more visibile seams, doing my best trying to hide them:

6187502736_8c42f1b1be_m.jpg 6186981239_cebb1ab89f_m.jpg 6186981679_d157d6926e_m.jpg

I still have to finish coating the torso in Plasti-dip, but it's coming along.

I was also able to get a forearm built, but took a slightly different approach. I used Kirrou's HD model, but used both of the "inside" halves of the left and right models, creating a universal forearm:

6187554742_38a896c19a_m.jpg 6187032631_9291897306_m.jpg

I was able to slush the inside tonight with rondo, but was just a few ounces short. I taped over the ends so that I could thoroughly coat everything, but didn't quite get it all. Oh well, nothing another small batch won't fix:

Thanks for looking, and enjoy!
