My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I despise MLP and I think it is silly and childish......

But secretly I fear that I would like it if I watched it.

I hate to say it, but I was just like you.
Once upon a time, along long time ago... Ya, then I came here and saw how much its talked about and finally gave it a shot, I ended up finishing the series a month ago and cant wait to see the new movie once its on dvd or Netflix... I couldn't tell you how many times I "ROFL'ed" through out the series...

Give it a try...

when I first saw the first episode on the related videos section with 1.something million views I way going to go in there and dislike it and leave...

and now I'm here

okay if we're about to talk about our childhoods I've got to say this, I've seen it all guys. but MLP:FIM was okay, sure it's kiddy, but the idea behind it was gold. much like MMPR(loved the first season.) I mean my sister was a big MLP fan which at first she couldn't under stand why fluttershy was shy, over why rainbow dash could break the speed of sound, when clearly little kids didn't understand what the speed of sound was. heck back then I would watch part of it, and leave, now I watch it because it's allow like how life is now a day. so yeah I'm a fan just not big enough to put a large emblem on my suit but a playing card sized pic of rainbow dash with an AR, but not really a fan of the new MLP:FIM with the people, it's just odd trying to think of them as the same people.

I don't suppose anyone happens to know who this fine armour belongs to?

I think these were taken around May 10th at EqLA 2013, but I haven't been able to find the source
(First image traces back to multiple Tumblr pages, and the owner of the DA photo says he doesn't know who it was)

when you have 65 episodes that is all I am pretty much watching until they fall asleep. then I watch it by myself until I realize I can change it. but I must say rainbow dash is my favorite.

About five years ago, I didn't like anime at all. I refused to watch it.
A friend of mine, one day, told me, "Red, you need to check out Ghost in the Shell."
"I don't like anime, no thanks."
"But this is totally different. You're a huge cyberpunk fanatic. You dress like Deckard to work at a hardware store."
"What makes it different?"
"It's... Hard to say. It's much better quality, and the story is awesome. Just trust me, I promise you'll like it."
"Holy crap. I'm sorry I ever doubted you."

Shortly thereafter:
"Hey, Red, have you ever seen Firefly?"
"No, I saw a couple of clips on YouTube before, it looked kinda stupid. Generally things with a lot of dumb YouTube clips tend to be stupid."
"Oh, trust me, it's not, it's different. You're big on wacky sci-fi stuff, you'll love it."
"What makes it different?"
"It's hard to say, it's... Very well done, and the story is awesome."
"WHere has this show been all of my life? I'm sorry I ever doubted you."

Naturally, after a couple incidents like this, one would be inclined to trust something when people say, "I can't really describe it, but it's extremely well-done and very good."
So naturally when the MPL thing came up, and almost every last one of my friends was raving about it, it only took a little bit of arguing to get me to try it.
"Red, you need to check out My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic."
"I, uh... Don't like flash-animated cartoons for preteen girls, no thanks."
"But this flash-animated cartoon for preteen girls is totally different from all of the other ones out there! And you're a huge, flagrant furry, so you're bound to like it."
"Oh, gee, thanks... What makes it different?"
"THe quality! And the story!"
I gave it a shrug and found an episode on youtube.
ANd to my credit, I sat through the whole thing.
"What the #^@& did I just watch?"
"Wasn't it great?"
"Maybe if I was 12 years old and part of a girl clique."
"Well... The first episode is kinda slow. YOu know, they have to set things up."
"Well, it's a kid's cartoon, you can't have the same level of backstory as Ghost in the SHell, and even they managed to tell the story over 24 episodes without leaving viewers too terribly lost if they missed one."
"Just watch the second one."
So I did. ANd it was exactly the same. Spastic sugar-rush humor intended for 8-12 girls, "lessons" and "morals" that even I managed to learn by the time I was about 15, even with a considerable case of Asperger's.
"Look. This is... This just isn't for me, okay? I'm really not enjoying this at all, I feel like the whole show is forced and kinda... Well, childish. And some times that's not a bad thing. Just... This time, it's not for me."
"Okay, okay, look. You just have to watch X episode from Y season. You'll totally get it then. I promise."
"Sigh. Okay."
About thirty minutes later I had an enormous headache and a newfound confusion with the show's immense popularity.
"What part are you at now, Red?"
"The purple dragon thing just did something clumsy and made an ass of himself, and they all learned a valuable lesson about friendship. Actually, come to think if it, it was exactly the $^*@ing same as the last two episodes that you had me watch."
"Hold on just a second. You have to watch this other clip. Just a clip."
"THat clip consisted of something getting hit in the face with an apple and going wall-eyed for a moment. What do you think I am?"
"Okay. Just one last clip."
"No. No more. You've wasted an hour and a half of my time and I want an explanation. What is it that you see about this mess of colors and helium voices that equates to 'entertainment'?"
"You're just too serious! You need to lighten up and enjoy silly things!"
"Look. If I wanted silly, I'd watch the Wren & Stimpy show, or the G-Mod Idiot Box. Or Jerry Springer. Or give my cat some catnip and shine the laser pointer on the ceiling."
"Hey! There's no need to persecute!"
"I'm not persecuting! The show is just retarded! If you want to watch it, that's fine. But stop trying to make me like it. Just stop. You want me to like the show because you're insecure about the fact that you like it, I get that. You don't have to be, that's fine! I won't start to hate you just because I hate something that you like. You like Jaegermeister. I hate it. We're still friends. You like trucks. I hate them. We're still friends. So please, stop trying to make me like My Little Pony."

After a few messages coming from this person subsequently containing brony-modified words such as "nopony" (nobody) "brohoof" (presumably "bro-fist") and several others, in what I can only assume was a poorly thought-out attempt to warm me up to the idea of the MLP show, I had to break contact with this friend for a while, with the excuse of "My brother pirated seven pornographic films and our ISP has dropped us, so I will be offline until we find a new service provider."

When I came back around a month after that, nothing had changed. That's when I started to worry. This seems to be more than just a fad. At least with Pokémon, there was afun, conmpetitive video game following. So one can sort of understand that.

I have my own theories, being a student of sociology, but they're all speculation, because any time you ask a brony why they like the show, they frigging always answer with some combination of factors including "story", "animation quality" and "Lauren Faust is a genius".

well it depends from person to person, hell i meet a furry at work,( casher at a doller gerneral) and i was huming the metal brony theme and then i here him go.
"you guys need to lighten up a little."
"which guys."
"you brony guys"
i looked up and seen the look on his face and i just went "how do know what we like."
and he goes "because i'm a fur."
and that was that.

for which one EG or MLPFIM?

due to I can't wait I've been reading every little thing of fanfiction for a while, plus trying to come up with a why to make a con go down a fantasy route so I can wear the MLPFIM armor I've got, and no I'm not posting it.

All in all, I'd have to say if I want something childish and lacking in intellectual stimuli, I'll stick with watching Pokemon, and for the not-as-childish-but-still-immature, Simpsons and re-runs of Futurama. Already re-watched the entire series of Animaniacs and Tiny Toons (or at least as much as they broadcast on the Hub, minus the Tiny Toons Christmas special), too, so I have plenty of sources for silliness. MLP, gotta go with Red in that it's just too childish and the target demographic is definitely adolescent girls. Sorry to all the "bronies," but honestly I don't know how even a semi-grown man can enjoy that show, and this is coming from a fellow fan of cartoon animals and other such anthropomorphic paraphernalia (in short, a "furry"). I've watched a few episodes and came into a few more in-progress, and while it didn't have the same "brain cells are committing suicide by the second" effect that so many of today's cartoons have on me (Sponge Bob, Regular show, Gumball, Adventure Time...pretty much anything made in the last 5 years or so that's not listed at the top or Marvel related), it still left me wondering why I had just wasted my time on that when I could have been watching music videos on demand or something. Or chasing after the ever elusive Lusty Argonian Maid in Skyrim (still so very, very disappointed that there are no marriage-eligible Khajiit and only one marriage-eligible Argonian woman in the game). If I really, really, really feel the need to watch a mind-numbing cartoon, maybe I'll dig up Teen Titans Go and see if that's really as bad as it looks.

well that's your option zaff just don't start fight's in other peoples thread. and yeah i'm a bit of a fur but not full blown one see thanks to kami con season 5 I've meet someone and now she wants us to season 6 because of tom blum if you don't know him watch any anime show and you can then say oh yeah that guy, or just watch toonmai and seen to tom on there and you'll be done.

...this is a path I recommend you stop going down.
Gold isn't the word I would use. NSFW would be.

i'm not talking about his other work(I've been there and went WTB is this.) I just find the stuff on YouTube to be better which I'd say is gold because it's funny. at least it not some other stuff that the MLPFIM group on redvsblue has linked... now that's really NSFW.

clear....

I got a pluse...

okay now that I got that out of the way I put in halo MLP and found this...
