What materials do you use when you are making a prop from scratch?

Hi! I need help figuring out what material I should use. I don't want to make a prop using pepakura because the last time I did I ran out of paper and it took ages! I was thinking of using a polystyrene block and cutting out the prop and then adding water-proof stuff to it, but I'm not sure. Please leave tips!

the only thing i've done is a magnum pistol... which i recommend using cardboard and building layers onto it with craft foam.

I cut the shape out of wood, then add details using plastic, cardboard, metal, etc. Then Bondo, sand, and paint! Makes it accurate enough for me!

I'm thinkin of buildin a DMR, wood sounds like the way to go for me, but you may have a completely different view. lol yea, pretty much what Rheiner said.

I use cardboard and ductape. It's worked out pretty well so far. But in heat, say in my closet, the tape loses its wonderful adhesiveness starts to...bubble and stick out.
Also, cardboard isn't strong; it bends and folds dramatically!
I need to look up some "plastic in a can" or "spray on metal", lol

I agree! EVA foam especially. That stuff can be used for anything!
