Hello again, the last few days i've not made much progress as i've been looking after my 2 boys so i've got them involved in something different and started work on another part of an iron man suit. Namely the arms. First up, i've popped on a latex glove, reverse taped my whole forearm in masking tape and then covered the whole arm from fingertip to elbow in duct tape. I then cut my arm out, filled with news paper and taped it back up as i went to produce the following.

As you can see, i now have a fairly serviceable right arm(and a left hand that will fit both my boys - i didnt want to subect them both to the full arm wrap) for building the model onto. Next tonight i will construct a card frame not unlike the prototype arm in iron man 1 to base the rest of the build on. Hopefully this stage will go quicky. The finished prop will probably include card, cardboard, putty, CA glue and lots of paint. Will keep this up to date when i'm not round the shop working.

so this morning i've put some bits together. 2 hand parts for my son and one(so far) for me.

going to jump straight to layering resin putty over the top this afternon.

for those wondering, i'm using 151 epoxy repair putty. it has a work time of less than 10 minuites and is rock hard in 20. Cost is less than £2 for ~60g of putty.

Nice scratch building. I like the duct tape arm too!:D

thanks, i might redo the forearm parts i've made with a wooden or metal frame. They are warped to hell. need to adjust the design i guess. The duct tape arm was fun - i might do a leg next, wont be fun with my legs as they are quite hairy and i'm reverse maskinging taping to give me something to duct tape. pics to follow

i've noticed while working on these hands i'm better off with simpler pepakura files so i can spend more time on later stages to add the details like palm plating and finger joints(which i'm still working out - the joints need to be pretty low profile)

more detail added and lots and lots of sanding. its starting to get closer to being ready to paint. as you can see, i've thrown a primer on there to check where the valleys need smoothing out.

ive been working with my son today to figure out what needs tweaking and i've decided to fill the inside of the left handside on the bottom last photo and then sand it back in as theres a good 10-15mm of space there. I'm also going to file back the back of the wrist area so he can bend his wrist right back (he cant quite make it to 90 degrees like i'd like him to... yes i'm a savage task master :p)

One more set of sanding after that and i'm going to start on the forearm...

so the supplier of i putty has run out >.< but have picked up a 1.2kg tin of this :

As you may see, it has the consistency of icing sugar and has a work time of no more than 5 minuites. i may need to dial back the hardener to give me longer to work. i've been given some suggestions as to how to improve it but in the meantime i'm impatient so heres what happens when you apply it.

I am going to have to mix much smaller batches and do a couple of square inches at a time. TEDIOUS but the quality should go up and need to sand go down.

i'm going to slap this stuff onto the face plate and then file/drill it back to what i need. I have already managed to crack the face plate even though it has been resined first. I may need to fibreglass the inside(replacing fibreglass with bandage to reduce irritation. more updates to follow.

wel i've got to make sure the kids dont destroy it BUT my impatience has crept in again with this :
