These first few pics are my finished weapons, to save you guys searching through this thread for them! If you want to see my build process for each weapon, though, feel free to keep reading!

My foam Reach M6G:

My most recent prop, the M739 SAW from Halo 4:
IMG_20151025_204048.jpg

So here is my third attempt at a reach magnum. First one was made from insulation board, but I didn't like the way it held detail and the scale was slightly too small. Second try I made with craft foam as well, but I tried to glass/bondo it, and it just didn't shape well and the scale was also off. This time around, i used straight up craft foam and a few small dowels for detailed bits. I'll seal it with mod podge and paint it up once I have the chance. Enough chatter, here are some progress pics!

A little ugly at this point, but no worries, it'll get covered

The scope is the only part I used a heat gun on, simply to make it fit properly and hold its shape.

And here are the (more or less) finished pics, sans sealant and paint.

The clip removable? ?

Nope! No moving parts on this guy. Just a (relatively) sturdy foam model for showing off.

That looks very nice! How'd you get the beveled edges so clean? (like on the grip)

Thanks! Just a little time with 100grit sand paper does wonders on craft and eva foam. I believe I also did a quick run over with 400g as well, but I'm not sure it made any difference at that point.

Very Nice! Kudos on the perseverance. Excellent detail and it looks like you've got the scale spot on. Can't wait to see it painted!

Wow!

I had thought i'd do all my stuff in pep/rondo etc, but this has really inspired me to consider foam for some of it at least. Excellent work!

Thanks for the positive responses guys! Im currently putting multiple coats of mod podge on it to seal it before paint. As for paint, I want to spray the base coat for a smooth look, then I'll hand paint some of the details.

What did you do to get that kind of detail on the grip?

I added the grip detail, as well as a few other small details, by going over it multiple times with a ballpoint pen. After tracing over it two or three times, the foam will hold the detail.

My apologies for the double post, but I finally got the chance to slap on some paint. I ended up hand brushing the whole thing using acrylic paints, and I'm happy with the outcome. Overall she isn't 100% perfect, due to a few small seams between the foam pieces, but I can live with it at this point. Still haven't weathered/damage it yet, but super stoked on how it's coming.

Really nice work. It is great to see props made with such easy materials. Thanks for sharing.

Sooo time for a quick update! First off, thanks a ton for the positive feedback! Weathered and battle damaged my magnum to finish it off. It looks a bit more shiny in the pics than in person.

So I decided to rename my thread, as I will be making more foam weapon props, an might as well toss em all in here together!

Here is the beginning of my next project!

Alright! So now that snowboarding season is pretty much over, I'll have a bit more spare time to dedicate to my prop making. I decided to make the saw in pieces, as it is far easier to work on, and detail, a small part, over slapping everything onto one large chunk.

So I've found that pink insulation board is fantastic for smaller, detailed pieces, but I just can't seem to manipulate large pieces the way I would like. So for this current model, I'll be using a combo of 1/2" insulation board and 5mm/2mm craft foam.

Here are a few shots of the completed sight rail:

And one last shot of it resting on the body of the gun to give an idea of the scale. It is currently wider than the rest of the gun, but that will be taken into account as I progress.

I'll probably update again some time next week, as I'll be away for the weekend for one last snowboarding trip.

Re: FlyinPhil's fantastic thread of foamy weapon goodness- M6G and M739 (SAW) inside!

So my SAW has been put on hold for a bit...other stuff is just taking priority over it. I figured with the re-release of Halo 2 coming up right away, I should throw together a pair of M7 caseless submachine guns (SMG's)!

These will consist of EVA and craft foam for the bulk of the project, as well as some wood dowels and cardboard tubes.

First shot is just the base layers cut out of EVA floor mats, two layers per gun.

IMG_20141003_183701.jpg

The two sides have now been glued together, with a half inch dowel embedded in the skinny part of the retractable (stationary on my models ) part of the stock to keep them from being too floppy. After gluing the halves together, I used my dremel with a sanding bit to even out the edges and seams. Laying up some of the detail here as well.

20141004_130410.jpg

And just doing a little shaping on the stock, via razor blade and sandpaper. As you can see, one is finished, the other is not. (sorta hard to really see what's going on here, should be more visible in my next update)

20141004_172528.jpg

And here we have a little more detail layed up. Should have another update relatively soon, just ran out of glue sticks and haven't had a chance to pick some up. Enjoy!

Re: FlyinPhil's fantastic thread of foamy weapon goodness- Dual SMG's too!

This is just the thread I was looking for! Your weapons look great!

Re: FlyinPhil's fantastic thread of foamy weapon goodness- Dual SMG's too!

Man, these look good! You're apparantley very capable of maniuplating the foam to your will. I saw some guy (I'll start remembering usernames eventuallly) do a 'sectional' build of a DMR out of cardboard, which I really liked the final look of (and I realized I like the look of the DMR more than the BR55, in profile) so if I ever get around to doing a rifle, that'll probably be it. I also want to do an M6S SOCOM (not sure how that will work, guess it depends on if there's a sectional template available) and maybe some sort of heavy weapon (I'm thinking either a SPNKr or a Sp'laser, but that's a long way removed from now).

Really looking forward to seeing more, can never get enough of quality content.
