Hey, all wars have an image that everyone knows.
This isn't about what that image is but could it have been take by a Spartan with a camera?

No, Spartans could not have taken any pics that define a war. Spartans only carry things that explode or cause other things to explode. Cameras do neither of the above. Therefore, they are useless.

Kinda like the stories told in h3's believe?
I'd imagine there would be profoundly heroic and profoundly terrible things contained within each surviving Spartans helmet-cam.

Are you wondering if there are Spartan war-photographers? Probably not, seeing as they're mean, green, killing machines. It'd really be a waste of a Spartan if one was just snapping pics during an engagement. But I do believe that some (if not all) had built in cameras to record what they're seeing, and either live feed it to other members or to play back later for an AAR.

Glasscutter,
I think there is the distinct possibility that the feed's from Spartan helmet cams may have been taken by UNSC propaganda specialists and converted to still images for the media.

AWACS-89, Lockon13,
I think this would be a great project for a group of Halo Cosplayers. I personally have always liked the black and white Vietnam Era photo of a G.I. with his M14 rifle looking back into the mist of war.

In the future, there will be no need for an extra meatbag on the battlefield to snap cool-looking photos. Everyone has GoPros implanted in their eyes...er...they probably just use their helmet cameras.

Actually, Halo: CE and Forward Unto Dawn both already confirm that not only spartans have helmet cams, but regular marines do as well; as evidence shown by the feed that Sullivan was hacking in FUD, and Pvt. Jenkins' video feed from his camera as viewed by Master Chief in CE. So, as most have already said, there would be no need for a war photographer in the Halo universe, since everyone is already recording.

What i'm thinking is closer to axmaxwell's idea then Carpathia's
i was thinking about like how ONI has a whole section devoted to propaganda and a spartan with a camera could serve this role as well as an intelligent asset

am I the only one that read original halo graphic novel? ONI did have war time propaganda officers.

oh looky here.

The collection is rounded out with "Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa", written by Bulletproof Monk and Winter Men creator Brett Lewis and drawn by another legend, Jean "Moebius" Girard, France's foremost comics illustrator, best known for his work on The Incal and Silver Surfer. The story is told from the point of view of a photographer working for the USNC shortly before the city of New Mombasa is attacked by the Covenant. He's got an interesting job: editing the forage of the war to make it look like the Coveneant isn't winning it, which at that point in the game series, it is.

Lewis' idea is fairly smart- show the mechanics of the war from a civilian/media perspective. The photographer thinks sugarcoating the war and creating propaganda is wrong, but from a strategic perspective as opposed to a moral one. Moebius' take on New Mombasa is the opposite of the barren world that appears in the game. It's a rainbow riot of colors, and its beauty accentuates the tragedy of its destruction by the Covenant. In fact, like "Breaking Quarantine", it suffers from being such a short story, because the photographer and his world are just interesting enough to explore further. Lewis' brilliant Winter Men was ostensibly a mystery series about a former Soviet superhero turned freelance detective, but the real meat of the story was the simple everyday life he lived in the collapsing modern Russia. "Second Sunrise" mines a similar vein, but it ends too soon, with a clichéd final twist. Still, it's a good story overall, and I wonder if it helped inspire the backstory the player uncovers throughout their New Mombasa travels in the excellent Halo 3 ODST.

Ok last try to get this under control
what if a Spartan had a camera took it into the field and took a few pics and posted them to the internet
and yes I have read the graphic novel

First, ALL Spartans have cameras (Both for performance review, and Intel) and just what would be the point of a spartan posting a set of violent and/or unflattering images of Spartans after their dirty work as well as those images being incredibly classified.

Second, so what? so the UNSC now has war propaganda "Hooray."

Lastly, this wold be the job of a marine.

@ ricktickr
Because there's one in every crowd and technically couldn't it be argued that the Spartans are marines

Most of the spartans are actually a part of the UNSC Navy. Ranks like Petty Officer, Master Chief and Commander are all Navy ranks. Whereas UNSC Marine members like Jenkins and Buck, held ranks like Gunnery Sergeant and Private, which are Army/Marine ranks.

I thought the navy had a small branch of marines... that's what I've been told by my uncle who is retied navy.

I think the Spartan would be a bit too busy to worry about taking some photographs of an Alien/Promethean/Flood/Heroic Poses/whatever to post them on the internet. If he really wanted a picture, I'm sure he could get into the database where the feed from his integrated helmet cam is and take them from there. Are there Spartans whose job it is to be the photographer? I don't think so. That task would go to a Marine or propaganda specialist from the UNSC. Why spend all that money to create a Spartan just to hand him a camera? "Your AI will help you take better pictures..." nahh haha. Theoretically there is nothing stopping a spartan from bringing a camera from home and taking pictures, but it's very unlikely.

Technically the USMC operates under the Naval Administrative branch, as they have since their inception as ship borne infantry. Think about the root of the word Marine; something pertaining to water. There is still a marine detachment aboard every US Vessel today, perhaps that's what you're uncle meant.
Now as far as this thread regarding Spartan War photographers...I just don't see it. Not with Spartans anyway. This thread actually made me think of the epilogue in Halo 4 when the Pelican with the Marines landed where the Didact used the Composer on Earth. Im sure they were taking pictures and surveying the affects of the Didact's weapon but I think that's just it, they were marines not Spartans. Anyway that's my thought!

The only source of Spartan footage that we know of is from Fred's helmet in the Halo Forward Unto Dawn movie that Cadet Sullivan had to hack out of ONI secured channels so Spartans would never upload footage or pictures to the general public, only to their higher ups and that is even rare.
Your best bet for war photography and pictures are from idiotic journalist who somehow could upload their images to what the equivalent of the internet is for the UNSC and even then I bet Government officials would have the images hidden as it would spread even more fear among the colonies and cause discourse. So the only photos that civies would ever see would be propaganda of destroyed Covenant ships and a UNSC marine standing on top of a dead covenant trooper.

!

Nearly all of this is correct. Do a Google search for the Marine logo, and you'll notice that it says "Department of the Navy" across the top of the crest. However, there was no Marine detachment on the destroyer on which I was stationed for 4-1/2 years. There were Marines stationed on larger vessels like carriers, but not smaller vessels. I know most Marines would consider the Marine Corps an independent military like the Army, and for the most part, they are; but, officially, they still operate as a division of the Navy.

As for Marine journalists and war correspondents; they do exist, as well as in the Navy. But I doubt you'd see a Navy SEAL running around with a camera taking war footage of their missions. I would assume the same would be true with Spartans.
