We understand not all members (in fact, many) will want to broaden their horizons beyond Halo. In fact, many already have. The decision to set up and support an "Other" costumes and props section should speak to the support that we hope to lend to members who want to create, regardless of the fandom. And if our members want to create something new, whether it be local regiments (which are all community driven), new costuming groups, or new major forum sections, etc. it will be created as the needs arise, as occurred on the RPF. In fact, it already has. Again, just like the RPF spawned Marvel, Judge Dredd, etc. sub sections, here on the 405th the prevalence of other games costumes has become so prevalent that they've warranted their own section devoted to them. If Destiny does eventually become as big as some people expect it to be, then perhaps we may see a Destiny section someday. But at this point, while it's popular, it doesn't warrant it. But that doesn't mean "Never"
As far as the future of Halo, again, we'll keep an eye on it. The series was supposed to end at a trilogy, and I'm sure some Bungie fans are aware of the mixed feelings of handing the reins over to 343i. Speculating what will happen in several years is difficult. If the games do end, does that mean people will stop costuming from it? Perhaps, perhaps not. Star Wars is a good example to look at. There was a limited amount of new material, and often what material was released was heavily criticized, but its costuming community goes strong to this day. And suddenly, we have an announcement for an Episode 7 (plus a complete wipe of the EU...) so who knows what the future holds? Will Halo have that amount of staying power? Some expect yes, some expect no, but it's speculation in the end.
What is true right now is that, despite our community tackling many other projects, the 405th is identified with Halo. Destiny, Skyrim, Fallout, etc. large costume gatherings for these games have never been identified with the 405th moniker, their developers have never felt the need to mention 405th by name, and we don't have as close a working relationship with any other company as we do with 343i. The 405th IS the Halo gathering at many cons, but this does not apply to other gaming franchises. As Art notes, we have a very exciting opportunity for Halo fans at this time, and it behooves us to make the most of it.
Right now all I'm saying is that for future consideration, should we only identify ourselves with a specific Title of a game (ex. Halo), only certain specific titles (ex. Halo, Destiny, ....), or should we consider turning the community into the "Home" for builds based on any number of Titles that are made by certain game developers (ex. Bungie/343i)?
This line I find interesting, but let's try rewording it a little.
How about we identify ourselves with a specific franchise (Halo) while also building a community for builds based on any number of titles, not even specific to game developers? Because honestly, that's effectively what we have here. We have a costuming organization that's heavily identified with Halo and focuses on Halo at events (tabling, photoshoots, etc.) with a forum that, while exemplifying and focusing largely on Halo also provides outlets for a wide number of gaming costume construction needs, even if it's as simple as a dedicated "other costumes" section. Hopefully that makes sense?
I think the biggest thing I want to stress is that, regardless of how you feel about the success of Halo, if you want to create new ventures, such as say, a Destiny costuming group, you should create it because you love and want to see Destiny costumes, not simply because you think franchise is dead. As Art and others noted, trying to form a group because you hate something, never turns out well. Instead, create because you love something.
