[COMPLETE] Halo 4 Prefect Variant Foam Build

OK guys so I am starting on my first project which is going to be a foam, Halo 4 Prefect style armor...

I saw this picture which I thought looked really sick and decided to see what else I could find

Lo and behold, there's a full set of Prefect Pep files in the 405th 4shared repository... however they're all for paper and I want to use foam, so I decided I would convert them myself and post them here for others to use. So far I've got the chest piece and gauntlets done but I'll update this top post with more as I do them. Also, gotta give credit where credit is due, these were originally unfolded by MissingSpartan7.

So, I'm going to be building the base from the Pep files but there's some detail left out that I'll be freehanding. I'm hopefully going to start construction tomorrow on the gauntlet and forearm piece.

I chose these because they look durable but at the same time light and breathable (very important here in Arizona where it's hot hot hot).

I am securing the pieces with velcro which attaches to itself as well as to the undersuit clothes I am using.

Well I just got back from shopping for materials. Got 3 thicknesses of EVA foam, some hot glue, and some duct tape. I plan to make a duct tape double but that will have to wait for another day. Also cleaned off my desk and got it all set up to start working. Hopefully I'll have another update with some actual progress later tonight. Now to get my butt into gear and start building...

The picture I posted before was actually from the concept design.. I found it on the designer's blog. The ingame armor looks slightly different, the knees are one of the changes, slightly less bulk

I like the in game armor's legs and boots more but I like the concept's chest piece more... I like how it fills up to his chin almost, makes it seem more protective and sleek IMO.

First update of the night: got the first part of the first forearm piece done... 2nd try and I might redo it one more time... Glad I got extra foam. You can see the difference between even the first side I cut and the second I did on this piece. My cutting technique has already improved 10 fold...

Update 3: I decided to re do it again this time using some more advanced cuts and the techniques I learned before. I would try to describe then but you really just have to do it yourself and learn the feel. Anyway the main plate now looks like this

Great start to the build. Looks like you're getting the hang of foam nicely.

When it comes time to add in the line details, I have a method that will work very nicely, provided you have a heat gun.

For these recessed line details, what you can do is draw the shape onto your forearm, then lightly score the foam with your blade, maybe 1/16" - 1/8" deep, using your sketched lines as a guide. Then take your heat gun and go over the scored areas. Once you heat it up, let the foam cool back down. When you let the foam cool down, it will constrict a little bit, opening up the scored foam. You can keep doing this until you get the desired width (up to a certain point.) I've used this in some of my foam builds and it works REALLY well. Another alternative would be to use a Dremel with a small stone bit to carve the recessed lines.

I saw that in a video somewhere and was planning on using it. Thanks!

Update 4: next iteration of the forearm is done... I'm really happy with how smooth it came out. Only part I don't love is the little cut out that I screwed up a "fixer" cut on... A bit of sanding should resolve that though.

Another update, finished both forearm, gauntlet, and elbow pieces... Though I might redo the elbow pieces later. Starting on shoulder and bicep pieces now

Looking great man! One recommendation is to use new blades more often. Whenever my blades start to pull I replace them. I try to sharpen them some times but for the most part I just replace them. It gives way cleaner edges. I just bought a hundred blades on amazon for 14$.

Also for straight cuts I line up my metal ruler and use it to guide my cut.

I'm really excited to see how this one turns out. Especially the helmet!

Finished the shoulder pieces, figured out a cool weathering/damage technique with the heat gun by accident. I think it looks pretty good.

Looking great! I like the heat gun weathering you did. If you want to get sort of scorch marks/burn marks, you can run the tip of the glue gun back and forth over the foam, eventually creating what looks like a scorch mark. I did this on a Mandalore the Ultimate helmet and it looked pretty awesome. It does look like you forgot to mirror the pieces when building the second shoulder, but it still looks good

Yeah I realized that too late... I will probably re do one eventually, but... Couldn't be bothered right now since that was already my 3rd and 4th attempt. Plus I'm not sure that anyone would notice unless you're looking at them side by side like that.

Also, I'm in need if a bit of advice. I'm a bit stuck on where to actually start on the chest piece... Like should I/how should I make an under piece or base or should I just build on thin air so to speak?

Just build it "in thin air". I would start on the collar/neck portion and work my way down the front, then build the back from top to bottom and lastly the side "strips".
