Hey, everyone. It's been a long time since I posted anything. But I, like most everyone else, I am very excited for Destiny. So I decided to model my Warlock's helmet from the beta. Which required me to learn how to do 3D modeling, since I never had before. But after a few Blender tutorials and lots of trial and error, here I am. This is the Chroma Vow:

Like I said, this is my first model, ever, but I've had plenty of experience with Pepakura so I kind of knew what to look out for. Constructive criticism is welcome, however! I used screenshots from the Destiny Companion app as references. I realize that the neck opening is very small, but I plan on slush casting Smooth-on 320 into my pep so I gave myself some extra edges to do that.

I have some other things I'd like to model, and if I get to them I'll post them as well. Or if anyone wants to take some screenshots of gear from the beta I might take a crack at it if I feel so inclined. I've found that Android devices work best because you can zoom in on and rotate individual pieces of gear.

Anyway, I've got mine printed and ready to go, and I'd love to see anyone else's builds if they decide to try!

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

For a first timer, you did a darn good job.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

I took a look at it as this was my favorite/main helmet from the game; for a first time model this is really good, already printing mine and getting ready to go.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Looks good! Do u have plans on middling other destiny stuff? It would be cool if u could 3D model the thorn and the knife. It would also be appreciated because I couldn't find anyother 3D models of them

Thanks! It helps that I've put together a few helmets in my day. So I was drawing from that experience to make it doable for pep.

Awesome.

Elush99 has the knife here: http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/41863-Elusch99-s-Destiny-Models

And I looked at the renders Bungie put up of the Thorn, and that would be quite the undertaking. I'll keep it in mind but I think I want to get some other things under my belt first.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Ah! Damn I hate you so much yet love you at the same time. had I known you'd post this, I would not have started my scratch build a couple weeks ago ha ha. This is great work, I am in awe if this is your first time doing it, well done!

I'm a huge fan of the Chroma Vow helmet, and took in-game photo's of all my gear for reference prior to the Ps3 shutdown.

In-fact, with your permission, I may simply restart my Warlock cosplay build and use your helmet rather than make a helmet from scratch, based on a Halo 4 helmet, from a single Destiny reference photo(sorry for the mouthful) plus, being my first build I scaled it wrong and it seems like it will be a tight fit... :/ The build is a full cosplay, not just the helmet. If you don't mind me using your file, all credit would go towards you in regards to the helmet :)

Sure, go ahead. I'd love to see people build it.

Speaking of building it, there are some really thin pieces on the chin that are slightly annoying to put together. If you're taking a shot at it, it might be worth your time to unfold that area differently. I'm already past it but you might make it easier on yourself.

Those area's on the chin won't be a hassle for myself, I've reviewed them and considered what Cardstock I'm using and concluded they will be fine to handle. I usually begin with the chin area on a helmet project.

Excellent! I'm not too experienced with unfolding and such in Pepakura, but I think I have the basic gist to it. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Update: Easier than I thought, I've unfolded the larger parts as well as some others. unfortunately I can't save the unfold as I don't have a key. If anyone else decides to build this helmet, it only takes about 5mins to unfold the larger pieces :).

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Alright, update time. I finished the pep this morning and went right on to my preferred method of hardening, which is to pour casting resin into the helmet. Last time I used a kit from Smooth On, but I got a kit from Hobby Lobby this time. I didn't realize it had quite a bit less resin than the Smooth On product, but it was enough to allow me to go right on into sanding. I will need to build up the area around the neck, though, so I plan on using some kind of epoxy putty for that. Anyway, pics!

The sizing for this helmet turned out a little... disproportionate. The width seems about right, but it seems over tall and oblong. This could probably fixed by scaling along the y and z axis in Blender, but hey, that's what I get for sticking to video game proportions. I don't have any good pictures of me wearing it yet, but I should get some once I start smoothing and painting.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

So I'm gradually amassing supplies... got some more paint today. Also picked up the Newsweek Destiny issue for some inspiration. Some cool stuff in there.

Here are some pics of me wearing the helmet; I positioned it better this time and that made the sizing issues not look so bad...

It turns out, my thin plastic results were a blessing. It's really tight going over the ears, but with the thickness of the plastic it still has enough flex for me to bend the neck opening a little wider. if you look at some other references of this helmet, the top recessed part, above where I have already cut out, isn't actually part of the visor. Without any set padding though, I can't tell if my eyes will end up low enough to only use the bottom visor. I may have to sacrifice a little bit of accuracy so I can see.

With most of my initial sanding done, I went over most of the seams with spot putty. I'm pretty sure it's not intended to be used so extensively, but I don't have to build it up so much to warrant using bondo.

Great work so far! Honestly, I think it looks fine once it's being worn. What were you going to use for the visor? I was thinking thin Poly-carb....
Also, what type of paint are you using?

I'm looking at starting my helmet this week hopefully, as I have a few days off from work.

Also, how did you go about scaling it? I'm 5'6, and would consider adding some small padding on the inside so I'm a little unsure on how to size it correctly for my head, any help would be great.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

For the visor I would think 1/16" polycarbonate with some "limo black" window tinting film. Don't want anything too glossy.

For the visor I bought some plexiglass and some Rit Dye, and I'm going to try the dying method. I guess it's not really necessary to dye a flat visor, but I may need to dye an ODST visor too so I might as well do this at the same time. I know most people on the forums have dyed PETG before but from what I've read plexiglass should work too.

As far as paint, I have a dark blue from Krylon for the front and a light grey from Valspar for the back. This is after all the coats of primer that the smoothing process will require. After looking at all of the characters in the Destiny Newsweek, I've decided you can't go wrong with any color combination or pattern that suits your fancy. The variety is so great that whatever you choose will look plausible. There are also some helmet attachments that fit in the same base helmet I would be interested in making, once I have some better views of them.

For scaling, I printed off a character model from destiny, measured its height compared to the height of its helmet, and scaled to my height. This was close enough to the oft-used height of 31 cm that I just went with that. If you want to scale it down a couple of cm, that would be ok, but I wouldn't go too far because it is a relatively narrow helmet.

As far as my own progress goes, I sanded over my filler and put a coat of primer on. You can see rough spots where the paper got torn up from not being completely soaked with resin. These should sand off easier with the primer, though.

That's actually a very good method, surprised I didn't think of it!

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

I swear I'm working on this, finding time to post updates is just hard to do, lol. And that last picture looks REALLY rough compared to where it is now. Here's proof...

After sanding the first coat of primer:

15060032922_02d7f04dd5.jpg

Then I put some more spot putty on, sanded, hit it with some red primer, and more spot putty:

15057355111_7a0b1f0270.jpg

Sand, spot putty, primer, sand (getting the trend here?):

15048658816_890943385f.jpg

After this round, I put on some red primer and started sanding smooth with finer grits, and carved in the details:

14885116447_059e220eb6.jpg

15071656365_f2d2667d8f.jpg

At this point I laid down some grey primer and then a silver base coat:

15082631832_f424ed45e1.jpg

And that brings us up to speed! The next step is to mask off some areas so the silver will show through as cosmetic damage, and then get on to my actual colors. Let's hope the weather is good today so I can be outside working. Also I feel is helmet is missing a little flair, so I'm thinking of lighting up the recessed ovals on the side panels. Any comments?

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

A touch of lighting could be interesting. I say don't ever overlook the option of a custom paint job. The in-game "shaders" are supposed to give us color change options, but honestly unless paint no longer exists in the post-apocalyptic world of Destiny, I'm fairly certain there's going to be guardians rocking "non-traditional" color schemes.

I don't have pics yet, but I used dark blue on the front and what I thought would be a light blue-gray on the back. It ended up being mostly light blue, which I'm not a huge fan of. I think I'm just going to go with a darker gray on the back, and use some of my light blue to to a distressed pattern over the dark blue. I'll see what I come up with.

Re: Destiny: Chroma Vow Warlock Helmet

Not bad. Dark blue with some light blue highlights could be interesting as well.

I think it turned out very well, actually. But I'm going to wait and reveal the final paint scheme when it's entirely completed. For now, here's some more work in progress pics:

So I decided to go with mustard as my masking agent:

15136061081_9928445669.jpg

It worked absolutely fine, but it was a huge pain and really messy to remove. I won't be using it again.

Here's the dark blue primary color:

14952485227_2e1a162da9.jpg

And then the light blue that I later painted over and used for details:

14952371180_360fd23ef5.jpg

I know it doesn't look that blue in this pic, at that's what I thought, until I unmasked it. Then I think the dark blue really brought out the lighter blue. You can see it here, as well as some of my paint chipping effect from the mustard (I had started to mask off the front in order to repaint the back):

14952336919_3c5431012d.jpg

Here's the design I ended up going with on the front (which I keep wanting to call the "hood" for some reason):

14952483137_b8a2ed2753.jpg

And I guess I'll give you a teaser of how the final paint job turned out:

15116026546_aee38400b2.jpg

Hopefully my next post will be pictures of the finished product!

As far as the visor goes, dying my plexiglass was just a flat out failure. I'm thinking the water wasn't staying hot enough because I didn't have a large enough container I could just leave on the stove, so I had to pour hot water into a 5-gallon bucket. So plan B, I went to Farm and Fleet before work yesterday and bought some Nite Shades, which has been applied and is drying right now. I also cut out the recesses and will get some lights for those this evening. It's getting close!
