Props Halo Reach Needler Build

Xtremenoob, this is one incredible build. I really like all the detail that you're putting into how the pieces fit together, etc. You're really going above and beyond. Amazing stuff to say the least. I'd love to get my hands on one of these kits if you decide to sell them. :D

Thanks Rusty, but i only plan on selling finished copies. Sorry for the bad news.

Absolutely amazing work!

Thanks ;)
Those mold pictures make me so jealous. I've never been brave enough to venture into molding but seeing your results really make me want to give it a try!

Buy a trial kit and give it a go. Start with small things and build up your confidence before jumping into molding a helmet or something big.

This is the second time I wish I had money to buy a needler, with the first being Volpin's. One thing i have wondered and forgive me if you have already said this but are you going to release the 3D printing files?

Not to be selfish or anything im one to give what i can but i will not be releasing the files, sorry.

WOW that looks amazing

So far it looks great and i hope the finished piece turns out even better :)

That is one fine looking needler o_O

Thanks, I will be getting a better camera so i can get some really good pics of it soon.

So, thanks for the compliments and here is a little update as i will be painting the needler tomorrow from this post.

This piece will be casted in clear resin to give it a hovering appearance the only down side is that i will have to put a screw through it so it doesnt fall apart. Meaning the screw will be visible through the clear resin. :(

Well here are some last minute final painting tests before i paint tomorrow.

Aswell i did some testing on what glue i will use and i am surprised how strong it is. I glued a 1" thick resin cylinder (as well as testing the purple pigment) to a scrap of smoothcast 320 and then glued that to the end of a 1m long piece of wood. Once it fully cured i then clamped down Only the resin cylinder to my bench so that the piece of wood was free floating. By adding weights till something snapped and it turns out that the resin would break before the glue join would. So this was a very important test for the build because the lower piece will only be held on with the glue (so screws are not needed). If your are following this build from here then you will understand what i will be doing to the finish piece to give it a floating/hovering effect.

Ill update in the next few days when i have everything painted and ready for assembly.
Until then
Daniel

Not sure if you already castes the floating piece. You could add 2 prongs on both side of the floating piece that will go into the top and bottom of the corresponding parts. That later on assembly it can be glued together. This would get rid of the screw.

This piece will be casted in clear resin to give it a hovering appearance the only down side is that i will have to put a screw through it so it doesnt fall apart. Meaning the screw will be visible through the clear resin. :(

Is that where the Hand grip meets up with the bottom side of the Needler?
Because if so, I don't see why that piece is necessary at all.
I have seen fewer images and models with a gap between the two than I have seen ones that have no gap.
So I don't think it will be all that necessary to make sure that gap exists. For aesthetic purposes, just make sure it has the same styling (shape) and color that the hand grip itself has.
Looking at the Volpin needler, it appears that the hand grip comes down and makes contact with the bottom railing (or whatever you want to call it), but it doesn't necessarily look like the two are attached to one another.

So It has been a long time since the last update, i had problems with painting. Working with new paints and learning how they react is all apart of why i love doing it even through all the failers i now know and wont make the same mistakes. So here is the leading up to my current progress:

Some of these pieces still need the black wash for the detail lines.

I would love to buy one of these... Got a Price estimate on what you'll be asking for one of these bad boys?

In the words of matchmaking announcer: Un-friggin-believable. You are doing an amazing job with this build. Get the chills watching this thread.

This is the best halo weapon prop iv seen! The work you have put into the build is stunning, well done dude.
can I ask quickly, where did you get the hex stencil. Thanks

This is truly one of the best pieces I have ever seen! Very motivating!

May I ask: Are you wet-sanding or wetting it down with a sponge after priming to get that really smooth and shiny look?

Fully finished with base I haven't figured out a permanent price just yet but I would say around $950

I ended up buying a few of these in different sizes : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Airbrush...s_DrawingSupplies_EH&var=&hash=item5b07e36997

Yes after applying the primer I wet sanded with 1200 and 2000 so it wouldn't have that pebble effect. And before I molded the originals I did the same thing with the wet sanding but after I buffed and shined it so it would almost be as smooth as glass.

ITS FINALLY FINISHED !!!

That is AMAZING. I love the bronze instead of the purple it really helps it stand out from the game. I wish I had a 3D printer personally...and a good 3D model like you had.

well in the mcfarline grunt set they had it was bronze in fact I think it would make more sense if grunts were given cheaper weapons hell you could say you got that off a grunt. because look at how many you kill on just reach alone.

Now thats amazing. It looks just like in-game! Theres very few builds that actually achieve the material definition, amazing job!

I hope to achieve the same level of detail some day, this is definitely a big inspiration!

About how much time do you think you have invested into this project?

Beautiful work on both your models Daniel! By that I mean your Blender through MakerBot work as well as a really outstanding job of executing the physical model. Your display base shows great thought and attention to detail as well. The whole thing really is an impressive piece of work.

Like Master Builder, I'd love to know how many hours it took. Following the thread from beginning to end, it would appear this build only lasted 6 months but I realize that only reflects the physical model. How long did the computer work span before you printed your first piece? I spent hundreds of hours doing a prop largely with hand tools taking most of that time getting the dimensions and finish details to the quality level I needed. It would be interesting to compare apples to apples on how much work a 3D printed (or CNC) prop takes versus a traditional build. I think people unfamiliar with the process would be surprised at the time taken before the printer is turned on.

Definitely has my nomination for Elite status--if we still had it!

Truly an outstanding prop!
