It looks like the details have improved a lot from the throw away to the last one. It doesn't really even look like foam. Great work.

AR casting continues:

I also started work on my very first Covenant weapon, the spike grenade:
6031094975_ab910d10ce_o.jpg

That was just the mockup to decide how big I should make it. I know that it's supposed to be a full 36" long according to the references. But that strikes me as a bit ridiculous. Especially when you look at this shot from halo.bungie.org:
update_marine.jpg

I settled instead on making it just under 24 inches long. I figure I can change the length of the shaft if I decide that doesn't look right. With that in mind, I got to work turning the head of the grenade on the lathe:

After about an hour of work, it looked like so:
6031095059_e0b26e4cf4_o.jpg

Tomorrow I'll be finishing up the two ends of the spike grenade as well as the spikes. I'll be casting these in foam as well so I can harmlessly hurl them at pedestrians while I'm driving or whatever.

I'll also be starting on a sculpt of the frag grenade.

Stay tuned...

Man, you just can't be stopped. You are one busy guy with a lot of ideas in his head, that is for sure! Great work.

*gives a low whistle* wow, this is an awesome thread lol. I am totally diggin the weapons. Great detail and everything man :)
Holy crap thats a huge spike grenade... lol

Holy crap thats a huge spike grenade... lol

Yeah. That's why I'm making mine smaller.

When I posted last time, the spike grenade prototype looked about like so:
6034711550_235da6e0c4_o.jpg
...and that was the good side.

Today I mixed up some bondo and started building it up a bit:
6034711582_bbb88f0b8f_o.jpg

Once I'd filled in the woodgrain (and the huge splits and knots on the other side) it was time to smooth it out again:
6034711610_f1e5a13753_o.jpg

At this point I realized that I still had a big chunk of wood left over and I was really only using one hand, so I got started on a UNSC frag grenade too:
6034157461_88b5080997_o.jpg

The last thing I did before I left the workshop was to spray them both with some hammer-finish paint:

The other thing I did today was cast a "hero" version of the MA5C. I used the same mold, but instead of foam, this one was cast in resin. I started by coating both halves of the mold while they were still separated:

When it came out, it looked pretty good:

It also fits in pretty well with the rest of them:

Stay tuned for more...

I love reading all your threads. Every time I read them I want my own workshop. :) Too bad I'm on the east coast, otherwise I'd just crash one of your work sessions. LOL Great work man, keep it up.

So I turned down the bottom end of the handle:

I also made a lot of progress on the spikes:
6037243363_bd4d6a41c5_o.jpg

In all, there are 20 spikes and they're four different shapes. Here's the big ones:

Here's a shot of me holding them to provide scale:

Here's the top of the head end with all of the texturing done:

Here's the bottom end:

Here's all 20 spikes set up for molding:

I've also finished throwing together the frag grenade:

Saturday morning I made boxes to mold all of the parts of the spike grenade as well as the frag grenade. Sunday I'll be able to pull the molds and try casting a copy of each of them.

Stay tuned...

Saturday morning I went ahead and made boxes for all of the pieces of the spike grenade:

Once the boxes were together, I made simple block molds to make copies.

Here I am holding the first (throwaway) cast with the first casting of the spikes installed:

Here's the first two keepers with none of the spikes installed:

The frag grenade came out pretty good too:

Stay tuned...

So these guys are done:

I also went ahead and assembled two spike grenades:
6048535052_39c1a06eb2_o.jpg

Then I finished up the paintjobs on a handful of the MA5Cs. Here I am doing a blackwash on one of them to bring out the details:
6048534958_c128eec0ed_o.jpg

Here's the hero version in all of its glory (and dusty fingerprints):

Here's the current batch of work in progress:
6048535002_bda05aea9b_o.jpg

I'll be wrapping all of these things up tomorrow, but I'll probably have a few things leftover if you're intersted in having one of your own.

Either way, stay tuned...

Forgot to mention, since I didn't have the time or inclination to wire up the indicator lights on either side of the MA5C, I made a mold of some LEDs and threw together some power buttons, then cast them in clear resin with glow-in-the-dark pigment added in.

Here they are in the dark:
6048079509_0d35a38102_o.jpg

Not too shabby.

Looks real good. One question though. Is your plan to build everything before anyone else can? lol, JK. Love watching your stuff!

I'm still only building things from HALO 3. I'm pretty sure I'm the last guy to be building these things. I may be the first one to build all of them though...

Spike grenades are done:
6054995427_094d1ea092_b.jpg

I scaled them down to look a bit less ridiculous, but they're still darned big:
6054995379_08b46071e8_b.jpg

The "leather" wrapped around the shaft is actually some upholstery vinyl I had laying around in the workshop.

I'm mailing them off to the East Coast for the HALO: Helljumper film project. I'll be glad to not have them hanging in my workshop anymore:

Great job on those. Turned out really nice. The scale looks a lot better too.

^What he said^ . The scale did definitely turn out great. Not to mention the quality. Job well done sir!!

Here's the question that should have been asked LONG ago. WHEN THE FRAK DO YOU SLEEP!?!?!?!?!?!?! BTW, kick ass work, I want a shop like yours.

WHEN THE FRAK DO YOU SLEEP!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Typically I'll be tinkering in the shop until sometime between nine pm and two am. Then I'll shower to rinse off all of the dust and glue before going inside to upload pics and update my build threads and my blog. I tend to start nodding off in front of the computer between one and three am. Then I wake up when the sun hits my windows at about 7:30am.

The day starts with checking my email and catching up on my subscriptions before I get back into coveralls and start in the shop between ten am and noon. On rare occasions I'll even remember to eat a meal.
