Hey 405th! I decided that I am going to make a Spartan 4 for the main character in a movie project I'm making. I have some of it already started, so if it seems like I have a lot done, I just didn't start this thread as soon as I should've. :p It is also my first foam attempt, so if there's anything you think I could improve, please point it out!

These are the 2 Warrior shoulders I made, the one on the right isn't entirely finished, but is getting there.

THE RECON CHEST PIECE IS STARTED! It took me forever to hunt down a foam-friendly version of this thing, and thanks to brokenvisr's foam-readying skills and the fantastic unfolding job by crazydav0, I finally found what I was looking for!

Pepped up a Warrior helmet to go with it, pretty proud of my pepping job on this one!

This is the total progress I have done, with my undersuit (I know I messed up on the cod piece, I went overboard with making the circles. It's just too much fun!), my gloves, and the single Recruit forearm that I need to make a twin for.

Comment and let me know how it looks so far guys!

Nice progress so far, +1 sub. Btw how did the recon torso pep file go?

Keep up the great work :)

It went very well, I have yet to do the back side yet though. The front was pretty accurate, I combined some parts on Designer to get them easier to put on the foam as one piece. But you did a great job with the unfold!

looks good so far!!

so, with how fast youre progressing, done tomorrow right?

Haha! That would be a total dream come true!

Looks really neat. Could you show us or explain what you did with the under suit? Definitely subbed.

Sure thing!

For the undersuit, I wanted maximum flexibility, but still have the circles. I used this type of foam, its basically a camping mat type foam. It's really flexible, especially when you compare it to EVA foam.

One user showed this trick a long time ago (He had made the first Spartan 4 armor that I know of, if someone has his name, please let me know so I can give him credit) and it works really good! What you do, is take a sanding bit from your dremel in the size you want, and slide up the sanding sleeve up so that it comes off of the rubber cylinder just a little bit. Hold the dremel like a pencil, and in a straight up and down motion, make the circles!

8478017200_98d44d9004.jpg

This is the top piece of the undersuit. I didn't want to combine the legs and torso of the long johns I was using, so I decided to use a simple fix.

8478017192_e20991829c.jpg

I glued down only the top half of the stomach piece so that I can slide the pants up to meet the center and have it overlap the waistband, and at the same time, it meets the "codpiece."

8476926079_0b406500a4.jpg

The above, as demonstrated here. I think it works out very well, but I will be adding velcro on both the underside of the stomach piece and the top of the pants.

8478017102_6313b5c0b4.jpg

To detail up some areas, I used faux leather. I didn't use much, but I still have quite a bit of detailing to do.

8478016684_87c58b7f84.jpg

For the gloves, I trimmed small pieces of EVA foam and put them in between each knuckle on my fingers. I then detailed using hot glue. BY THE WAY, that handplate is custom.

I hope that answered your questions!!!!

NOW FOR TODAY'S UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

8478016550_c3de326f00.jpg

I cut and laid out the spinal column on the back of the undersuit! I made it cut in sections so that when I'm bending down, or moving in general, they will bend in sections, giving off a really cool effect.

8476925463_f49f0ec827.jpg

I also cut out the tricep pieces for the Warrior shoulders! Never even knew these things existed until I looked at Monkeyfuj's Spartan IV files!

Thanks for everyone's support so far, stay tuned for more updates!

Very well done! Like the dremel-trick on the undersuit. :p
The recon chest looks just awesome. I'm just wondering how you did the upper part on the chest, because the pep model looks different.

recon_difference.jpg

Last but not least, I'd appreciat larger pics, because it's not only interesting to see what people did, but also how they did it. ;)

For the double leveled part on the top of the front chest, I cut a line from the top to about the middle of the piece, then glued a piece to the underside of the top part, and then glued the side of the bottom part to the side of the piece glued to the underside of the top part. I'll see if I can take some pictures to show you what I mean.

As for the pictures being larger, I'll see what I can do. My camcorder that I'm using for pictures right now doesn't shoot at too high of a resolution, so maybe I'll try my brother's DSLR to try to get bigger pictures.

Looking good, and that undersuit is pretty stellar, I may just have to borrow a similar idea for my build, as they say the best form of admiration is duplication! Cant wait to see how this turns out :)

Sorry for the lack of updates, guys! I've been working really hard to get as much done as I can before my mid-winter break ends. I'll most likely have the update (with bigger pictures :p) up tonight!

OKAY! I'm finally back. Winter break ended, I was in a mad dash to do homework (procrastination!), and yadda yadda yadda I didn't get the update up on time.

SO!

Here is the update that I was supposed to post 2 days ago:

Lets start off with what I finished building before I get on with the progress pictures!

8490127036_2f62ea4cbe.jpg

Both shoulders are finished!

8490119402_3f076b9c76.jpg

I glued an undersuit circle piece to all the sides of it, and attached the tricep pieces to both. (As for that "green thing" on the armor, I'll tell you guys about that further in this update!)

NOW FOR WHAT I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON:

8489071831_afbf08b730.jpg

Kind of a dark picture (oh boy, do I hate prime lenses...) but thats my chestpiece on my makeshift manniquin. (I took off my Mark VI armor which it usually proudly displays...)

8490156302_8788cc385a.jpg

So a better lighting situation and a lens change later, this is the chest piece, with half completed front, and even less completed back!

8490162406_559ba6bd4e.jpg

I added on details, like this hole-tube-thingy...

8490168268_552b4388c9.jpg

...and the rest of the mid-chest guard (that's what I'm calling that "stick out" part on the Halo 4 chests.)

8490149904_584cd280c1.jpg

The back is kinda being done by freehand, because the file doesn't really match the reference pictures I have. But, I do use the file for templates (like for the wing thingies!)

8490143274_620fcb212c.jpg

I attached the linking-shoulder parts (also freehanded) with pencils. Kinda got desperate and MacGuyver'd it. :p

8489039119_90f952824a.jpg

Here's another shot of the freehanded linking-shoulder parts (yes, I'll get to explaining the green things in a second.)

8489033809_b1e287fdc4.jpg

Okay, the green things! I had some airsoft BB's laying around that I hadn't used in a while. I poked holes in the foam, put some hot glue in there, and shoved a BB in so that the top half would poke up. This gives the armor a bit of detail as there are some small bumps on the armor (I think.) Personally, I think it looks great!

That pretty much sums it up for this update!

Just a question, is PlastiDip the only/best way to seal your armor? I've heard things like that acrylic paint has a similar effect, but I'm not sure if it does. Does anyone know the answer?

STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE UPDATES!

Looking good my man! Like the creativity. I havn't tried anything other than plasti-dip but it certainly seems to be the easiest. It dries quick and you can easily brush it on.
Can't wait to see more! :D

Don't use acrylic without sealing the foam... it will soak up a LOT of paint and the surface won't be nice enough either.

Plasti dip is one possible way, will take a lot of material though - about 1 liter for a set of armor and perhaps one weapon.
Be careful though because the spray version only has about 0.2 liters' worth of material in it and that makes it a more expensive solution.
Make sure you experiment on various types of scrap pieces, I've found that craft foam for example is a bit harder to brush the plasti dip on.

You can also use PVA glue but that will harden and so it can creck if you bend the pieces, even accidentally.

Or you can try to use various kinds of plastic from Smooth-On, but those are even more expensive than plasti dip.

Thanks guys! I think I will do the PlastiDip. It sounds the easiest, and I want the best finish for this thing.

Been way too long. WAY TOO LONG! But I'm going to try to get this updated.

I have, however, made some thighpieces. They look abnormally thin because I used elastic to attach 4 sides together, so they hug the thighs closer.

Wow, I'll try to keep this updated more frequently. It's been a long time guys, but I'm BACK!

Are you making Watcher? That looks like one of it's wings,.. Sorta.

Loving this build; AND you color palette.
I like what you did with airsoft BBs, though I noticed some excess glue around them. If I may make a recommendation: Make the initial hole for the BB with the tip of your hot glue gun; It should leave the hole with a small coat of glue, the perfect amount to secure the BB.
Anyways, keep rockin' with the build man! I look forward to updates.

Another update, basically of what's been laying around. The shed I used in the summer got way too cold, and I discovered my armor practically FROZEN! I moved the pieces into the pole barn where I can hopefully work on them once they thaw out.

So I decided to show off the forearm a little bit more. The paint isn't exactly final yet. I need some more black paint (I hate not having my license!)

The gloves have also been redone, with a flatter approach. Did I mention I need more red paint too?

The Light Rifle and Assault Rifle got an overhaul. I may end up dying or blackwashing the Light Rifle though. Heck, the shiny "Halo 4-ish" Assault Rifle may need a good blackwash as well.
