NDE's Halo 4 Build

I thought your last build had some great detail work in it, but this just blows it out of the water! Pretty incredible, can't wait to see the whole thing!

Thank you very much. One of the reasons I started this build was to go way over the top and put my old suit to shame. Glad to see that it's going in that direction. So, again, Thank you.

*UPDATE*

This weekend I introduced my girlfriend, Heaven, to armoring. We started on some recruit forearms, which are the same ones I planned to use for my build (Yay! Less templates to draw up!), We faced a few problems with getting the angles right and ended up settling on using Pepakura based templates. I personally feel that pep templates are inferior in most cases (Not trying to offend anyone by saying that, just throwing out my opinion) to hand-drawn templates that are intended for foam. So last night, I sat down on my bed with the Halo 4 issue of Gameinformer and my sketchbook and drew up this:

100_1906_zps19cc82bb.jpg

It's just a doodle of the forearm that is intended to break it down into geometrical planes and help guide me when making templates. I tend to do this for every part, unless they're really complex, like my torso. Anyways, a few hours ago I began sketching and designing the actual templates and started building the forearm.

I was beyond happy with the result, except for one issue: The wrist-hole is too damn small for me. So I got to thinking 'Spartan-IVs have skin-tight armor, which means I'm going to have to have the opening that small.' I decided to not glue one of the edges of the foam, but instead put velcro on it, That way it gives me that extra inch of space I need to squeeze my hand through. Here's what I'm talking about:

100_1903_zps54649ca8.jpg

I'm pretty proud with how it's turning out, which is why I'm sharing this so early in the day. I hope this helps many others solve problems like this, because I'm sure I'm not the only one to face it. If I don't go to the midnight release of GTA 5 tonight, I'll be heading home to add the final details to my forearm and possibly start the second one. Also as a bonus, here's a shot of my sketch and the templates I used to make this.

I have no problem uploading them if someone would like to use them in the future. Thanks for looking!

Amazing progress. Your foam-work is quite literally spectacular, and as someone mentioned before, you're paintjob is fantastic too.

If you don't mind me asking, do you have any more tips for hand-drawing templates? Your templates come out great and I'm looking to achieve something similar. I tried checking the armor pieces in theatre mode and checked the pepakura file but still having trouble figuring out where to start in terms of guidelines.

Thanks!

EDIT: Sweet jesus, just took a closer look at your chest-piece, and I'm stunned. You did a fantastic job on the detailing, and with the paintjob and those shoulderpads attatched, it looks damn good. I'm so jealous, and I'll be watching this thread to see the final result.

Also I'm glad you gave Halo 4 a second chance, I was also quite unsure with H4 at first but it rubbed off on me.

How are you doing to screw head details? Are you actually securing the whole screw with a nut on the back or sawing the heads off and gluing them on?

First of all thank you.
When it comes to making templates, I try to view the object in a simple geometric shape, much like a 3D designer would. I then proceed to draw out one of the faces, I generally start with one that resembles the scale of the object (In the forearm I started with the long 'Y' shape, because I could easily determine the length of the model), after this I start drawing the rest of the faces in an order based off the length of the sides of my first piece. Once that's all done, trace 'em on foam, cut, glue, pose in the mirror(?), Etc.
Again, thank you. I'm quite worried about people's feelings towards it because it's not as accurate as it could've been.
Haha, yeah. I'm still peeved about somethings in the story line, but I'm VERY happy they fixed multiplayer. Granted, grenade throws piss me off more often than not, but still playable.

Good build and great start, can't wait to see the rest of the suit's progression.
Thank you, sir! :)

i would most definitely like those, plus for either of the torsos you made :D
I'll try to upload them tomorrow, my scanner was having issues tonight.

How are you doing to screw head details? Are you actually securing the whole screw with a nut on the back or sawing the heads off and gluing them on?
Those are 100% legitimate screws. I just went to the hardware store and got a bunch of the smallest flat-head screws I could find. I took a large sewing needle and stabbed holes where I wanted them and then shoved 'em in. Fun fact: My torso has 54 screws on it.

*UPDATE*

Got my forearm finished and plasti-dipped. Sorry, no pics yet, it's outside fully drying and awaiting paint.

In other news, made me some knees and hand plates.

100_1908_zpsde887616.jpg

I'll be releasing the templates for these alongside my forearm tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Forgot to mention last night, I don't have the templates I made for either of the torsos. However, my Vanguard chestplate is just laying around and probably won't get worked on. If you want it, pm me.

*UPDATE*

Finished painting the forearm, handplates, and my knees today.

Also I made my other forearm, gonna paint it before work tomorrow. AND I got some padding in the mail today that will be installed in my helmet when I get around to that part of the build.

I got my scanner working and was able to get the templates uploaded. Use them all you want, but do give me credit for them, they were made by me after all. I'm sure you all can figure out how to assemble them (A goes to A and so on..). Can you tell by my handwriting that I was in a hurry? Lol

Wow dude, thanks for the templates. Were those on regular sized 9x11 paper, or something different? Either way, I love the simplicity.

i printed them on 8.5x11 us standard printer paper and they came out perfect, a lil bit tight around the wrist, but thats what the velcro is for! awesome job with the templates NDE!

Thanks for confirming! I promised myself I wouldnt work until I finished what I was on commission for, but dang, is this tempting.

WOW. Just insane, looks amazing man!
Thank you! :D

Nice job, I love scratch builds and your doing it right
Thanks, bud!

You're welcome, glad you like 'em. Yup, that's standard paper, I print them on cardstock so they don't warp when I trace them on the foam.

Many thanks! Yeah, they're a bit tight, I had to dremel mine a bit so my wrist moves more freely.

*UPDATE*

No, I didn't die... I've been on vacation! .. Sorta. Took the weekend off from work to drive six miserably long hours north to go to... WARLORD ASCENSION!! As some of you may know, I'm a member of the SCA, which means I'm a Ren Faire geek that fights in armor. Warlord consisted of: camping, drinking with Vikings, wearing 100lbs of steel, beating people with sticks (We use Rattan 'swords' which is like bamboo on steroids), more drinking, role-playing, and singing songs that are too vulgar for me to post on here. It was loads of fun and left me tired and sore. But, I have to say it was worth it.

This morning I got a package in the mail, inside was a cast of Jose Valdez' Locus helmet and a red visor for it.

100_1920_zpsadc56635.jpg

100_1923_zps8b32f52e.jpg

First thing I did was cut out the visor and the back of my helmet, so that I could fit my giant head in it.

100_1926_zps676849a9.jpg

After that I started sanding it and doing modifications to make it more game-accurate (I drew red lines pointing to what I did).
1. Cut out pieces of Styrene and glued them to the bridge of the nose area.
2. Cut and dremelled the chin so it's more angular and looks more like the in-game model.

LocusMods_zps2fb158c2.png

And, here you can see how my head fits inside of it. Well, actually you can't see much, I have too much hair. Haha.

100_1929_zpsbe84be2c.jpg

Really awkward helmet, as expected, it's like wearing Alien's skull. I'm running to the hardware store tomorrow before work to pick up some supplies to get this guy all finished up. Got a few good ideas for certain parts tossing around in my head, so stay tuned!

Man, I'm a bit jealous...I make clothes for ren faire goers, but I have yet to make it to one, myself. Hoping to go to Waxahachie for one, one of these days.

That helmet must've made your day! Is it difficult to look down while wearing it?

You do? I might have to hit you up for a new tunic at some point! Haha.

Yes, it did! In fact I woke up early just to work on it. It is a bit difficult, and definitely hinders my lower pereffrial (hope I spelled that right); I'm gonna have to watch out for kids at Cons. Lol.

*UPDATE*

Got more work done on the Locus today. I used foam to re-define some of the details on the back, cut out the ear holes and installed mesh so I can actually hear, and did the 'Back-Off' mod... But with my own touch! No, the red visor isn't installed. I just taped it in for the pictures.

100_1936_zps591d7709.jpg

Here's the back.

100_1937_zps3aebd71c.jpg

And here's the new mesh and foam 'ears'.

100_1945_zps856a6931.jpg

100_1946_zps6f533684.jpg

I love the 'Back-off' idea, however I feel that having a removable part is slightly... I lack the words to describe how I feel about it, so let's just call it 'Ehhh'. I feel like if a helmet was designed to have a part that moves so your head can get in, said part would be attached to the helmet somehow. So I made a piston-like support that makes it so the back piece slides out far enough so my head can get in, but can never be taken completely off. I took an aluminum tube, put screws on one end to sever as stoppers and made it so that slides through another tube that's attached to the lower jaw of the Locus. It all stays secure with two magnets.

100_1942_zps3ea160f6.jpg

100_1944_zpsf4ed2b66.jpg

As you can see, it moves only about two inches outwards; leaving me with just enough room to slide my head in.

Here's a picture of me with the helmet on to show how well the visor conceals my face.

100_1948_zps93281d2f.jpg

I only have a small amount of sanding and touch-up work and then I'll start painting this bad boy! I'm soooooo excited!!! :D

This is amazing! Your helmet mods are just the work of a genius! I have to ask tho. How did you get those scratches on it armor to look so good? The black on metal color scheme just looks fantastic! How was it done?

Loving the way you are sealing the back neck portion of that helmet!! I was considering adding a seal to the front lower chin/neck of my helmet, I noticed I am missing that based on the halo reach pictures I've been looking at. Now You've given me ideas :p.
