Hello again everyone!
The last couple of weeks have been very busy for me (even though I'm on school break, go figure -_-). On top of finishing my Halo 4 armour, I've been working busily on a couple of side projects, and I figured it's about time I posted.

So here it is, the MA5D Individual Combat Weapon System - otherwise known simply as the Assault Rifle. I've been working on and off on this thing for the past week or so, in between resin curing, glue setting and paint drying. So far I'm very pleased with the result, although I'm nowhere near finished (I've been focusing on detailing only the right side of the weapon, saving templates I make as I go. I still have to detail the entire left side. Yay) The trigger does indeed "work", and can be squeezed in then pushed back into place by an internal spring. There is a compartment for a removable magazine, although I haven't made an ammo clip just yet. I also wired up some LEDs for a backlit ammo counter.

Anyway enough of that, here's some pictures of the build.

I started by scaling the main blueprint and printing it out. Mine isn't quite scaled full size, as I wanted it to look in proportion with my Chief suit. When the 7 ft Master Chief holds this weapon it looks puny in his hands, so I didn't want to be walking around with a gigantic Assault rifle.

I cut the template out in two sheets of cardboard, then kind of "sandwiched" lot's of support beams between them. Personally, I like this method better than doing sliced weapons.

Once the base was done I began to build up detail - The upper section is simply shaped using some thicker bit's of craft foam.

I then continued building up detail until I got this. Since I took this I have added a bit more here and there but you get the idea.

Is it just me, or does the colour scheme of the cardboard and foam look kinda cool? ALMOST a shame I'll have to paint this sucker up, but I think it'll look much nicer with paint anyway.

Sorry for the overload of pics haha, guess I got a little carried away :p . Anyway hope you like what you see here, comments and criticism are always welcome of course! Until next time folks :)

EDIT: by the way, in the pic with me holding the rifle, the perspective of the shot and angle of the gun seem to make it appear much smaller than it actually is. Weird :p

Maybe after this you could move up to foam or 3D printing. Very impressive considering its made out of cardboard.

One day I would love to own a 3d printer (maybe when the prices drop to this side of $1000) :) . For now, I'm fine with working within the limitations of cardboard. If by foam you mean carving weapons out of Styrofoam, I have tried it but personally I didn't enjoy building with that method as much (and I'm not fantastic at it). I prefer the additive process of building up layers, rather than carving (again, because of my carving skills lol).
Thanks for the reply :)

Looking good! I might do it your way next time I build an assault rifle. I made mine out of a Nerf Gun.

I like your method dude, it's a cost cutting exercise at best, this is going to be my next issue to overcome

EDIT: by the way, in the pic with me holding the rifle, the perspective of the shot and angle of the gun seem to make it appear much smaller than it actually is. Weird :p

i know the feeling. after completing the base color to my assault rife it still manages to look small when it isn't.
