Halo 4 Oceanic Helmet Build

Howdy! The Oceanic helmet doesn't get enough love, so I figured I'd see what I could do with it. After horsing around in the Halo 4 theater mode, I gathered enough reference images to start the blueprints. Only two views were drawn because the details are going to be added one at a time and in layers. It's easier for me to measure and figure everything out as I go along with a project like this.

The base form is going to be made using the method borrowed from Volpin Props. The better the base, the easier it will be to maintain the helmets symmetry throughout the entire project. Not a whole lot to see right now, but here you go.

Been a while! I didn't get any pictures of up until now of the base for no reason other than that I'm terrible at documenting prop progress.

It's just a big red lump right now, but the basic is shape is almost ready to start measuring and marking where details need to be added.

Interesting approach at making a helmet, I cant wait to see how it turns out for you. DId you have a date when you hope to finish it by?

this is cool, if I can ever afford a molding/casting set up this is how I'd go about modeling too, more control.
I don't think I've seen an oceanic helm completed out there before..? should be interesting, subbed!

I'm hoping to have the helmet, along with a bunch of other props, finished by next November. This is near the end of a fairly long list of current projects that still need to be finished.

Yeah, I can't sculpt to save my life, but this is more along the lines of hard-edge modeling, which is something I'm fairly proficient at. I've only seen one Pep Oceanic helmet and one someone modeled and 3D-printed one (can't remember who), but the end goal here is to offer casts and finished helmets, so I had to start from scratch.

I will definately be watching this build since the oceanic is one of those unusual helmets. It looks like youre off to a great start!

Been a couple days since my last update.

As the picture suggests, I'm starting over with the helmet and there are two decent reasons. The first is that I rushed the initial construction of the base, so it's kinda eh to work with. Any step forward I make in shaping is almost immediately undone because some parts are properly formed, but some are still squishy because of air pockets in the expanding foam. The second reason is so I can document the process via video for my little series that I've been working on, which leads me to this next picture.

Kinda neat, eh? This is the first project video that I'll be releasing. It's less of a tutorial and more of a "just watch me build this" kind of thing. The parts were made with a CNC router, so I figured people would like to see that kind of thing being done.

I didn't feel like it would have been appropriate to make another thread for my videos since I'm still just confined to the New Recruits board, so here we go. I'll end up making videos for most of the armor pieces I'm making, as well as other neat stuff.

First video! Scary, exciting, etc. The next, or one of the next, video is going to be me making a miniature vacuum-forming table so I can make cheap copies of the hand armor.

My firends preordered halo 4 from walmart just to get the oceanic gear. I look forword to seeing this build completion, good luck!

Well I used this helmet quite a bit in halo 4 so I look forward to seeing it come to life. Even cooler if you could make it functioning. Or at least wearable. The visor would be a colossal pain though.

Thanks!

The visor shouldn't be too bad. The helmet itself and the "cross" on the visor will eventually be cast in one piece and the visor bubble will be vacuum formed.

Speaking of vacuum forming...

First test set of my vacuum formed glove armor turned out pretty cool. I know the last bits are on backwards, they just seemed to flow better design-wise facing the other way. I've cut some new bucks on my CNC router out of MDF because the Sintra pieces won't hold up to the heat required for the .06 styrene to get all melty.
