Hey there 405th. Im finally getting around to posting my first post.

First of all, if any of you know of TzaHalon, well hes my best friend and is pretty much a brother to me. Halon is the guy who got me wanting to dive into this hobby when he showed up with an Odst helmet one day. We have been Talking about it for a few years on how we wanted to finish our Odst Costumes and go to a Con, well when we found Dafrontlinetrooper's tutorials on YouTube it finally gave us the push we needed to get started. so here are some pictures of my build so far and Id love to read some feedback. Thanks! Btw big thanks to Armory Props for sending me a raw cast Odst helmet!

-Silver

Nice build dude, are those the DFT plans? I've built a ODST with them myself with great success and accuracy.

Nice man,i love the free-hand method,it make easier to build an armor :).and ur suit seems to lack of some details :).hope see u soon

How tall are you, mate?
I've been looking forward to starting an ODST build myself, using DFT's templates, however he specifies no sizes.

You wouldn't have your templates still lying around there somewhere, for reference, would ya?

Hey Fender 159, me and silver worked together and we used DFT'S templates a lot of the armor we free handed. So not a lot of paper templates were made. Btw he's 5'9". I know it doesn't help much :/. We did use a lot of foam doing trial and error.

Looks great!! keep it up! I'm thinking of building one out of foam...i think i might just do it now.

Ahh. He's roughly my same size!

If you had any templates they would have worked for me. Oh well, I guess I'll have to freehand it as well, but since I have no experience working with foam (Or any other material, really), I wanted to minimize trial-and-error.

Any tips you could give me?

I dont blame you on wanting to minimize at all.
and trust me the freehand method was very intimidating at first for us as well, however we had a good outcome with our armor and was able to develop our own method of doing things.

Tip wise... if your going to freehand make sure your have a carpenter square to make sure your templates come out even, if they dont youll find out fast that the parts you cut out will not fit together right.

also we used the smaller utility knifes to cut our foam.http://www.lowes.com/pd_367240-1687...pl=1&currentURL=?Ntt=utility+knife&facetInfo=
IF YOU DO, use these blades, buy all the replacement blades you can, if you dont your cuts will turn out really ugly, you pretty much have to change your blades about ever 5 cuts or else it will get too dull to make a clean cut.

However we did get a tip from the guys at Armor props to use the titanium xacto knives to cute foam, so next build I do, I will be using those blades.

we were using sharpie markers to mark out lines, but the lines come out too thick to make an accurate cut.. so use a ball point pen, even if the ink doesn't come out the pen tip will leave a line on the foam that will be easy to follow with a blade.

and finally, dont get discouraged.. I never thought Id be good at this and I think for my first build ever Im doing pretty good. and in the end Im pretty glad Andy didnt give the sizes on his tutorials cause hes trying to teach us how to do it for ourselves... anyways hope this bit helps, let us know if you have any more questions.:cool

I'll definitely invest in some quality blades. Are titanium X-acto knives better than disposable? Or would I have to swap that out after some cuts?

Also, I saw somewhere that if you do use a sharpie to trace the shapes, cut on the inside edge of the mark, naturally, this is the side that contourns to the template (if any).

Just a tip :)

Do you use different kinds of foam? Also, I must have missed it, how did you make the helmet and visor? ODST visors are especially tricky.

Disposable blades are rather cheap and almost infinitely renewable. When one goes dull, you just swap it out for another blade. When you are down to one blade left, you pick up a new pack.

to Answer your questions on the titanium X-acto knives, refer to this video https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=749627891735096

and Im not saying DONT use Sharpies, Ive just found that using a ballpoint pen gives me better accurate cut lines.

Foam wise, we use the EVA foam mats that you can get from lowes and Harbor freight. for my chest and the center parts of my shoulders I bought a short sheet of EPS foam from home depot and just carved the shape that I wanted from it.

AND finally Helmet wise, I didn't actually make my helmet, Halon made his a few years back and when we started on armor I felt the helmet building process would take me way to long, so I got one from Jerm over at Armory Props (great guys btw) if you havent liked there Facebook page you should do it now. Jerm sent me a cast and a visor.
Now if you wish to make your Own helmet then I suggest using one of the many Pep files on the 405th database.

Im with you on that, even with the snap off box cutter blades, I can make one of those blades last a while just by snapping off the dull part.

*Update!*

so did a little more work on my Armor. First off, I added a little bit more detail to my shoulder piece
10330377_751442448242045_7078035576755758500_n.jpg

Basically I just added an extra layer of foam to the bottom half so it wouldn't seem so flat and basic.

Next I prepped my helmet to be primed and painted
10308140_751441964908760_7132878741714328017_n.jpg

for future notice, I would not recommend using Kyrlon paint&primer spray paint. I didnt go well on my helmet and I had to take it off :( which left one side of the helmet with tiny scratches that I couldn't sand off for some reason. (Battle Damage!) so I ended up buying a basic flat grey primer and painted the helmet with that, and then went over it again with metallic aluminum primer/paint

I decided that I wanted to embrace the cast helmet flaws, I felt that it would give my helmet a certain kind of character. alot of the imperfections I can convert into some wicked battle damage.

Until next time

I think you should use pep foam file.the dft's build is good but in my opinion is lack of curves and details :(

*UPDATE*

Hey guys, I finally got around to painting my Helmet. Im pretty excited with the outcome, two of my stencil decals failed but I can redo them.
