Got the bug again to build a new suit, this time for my fiancé. I already have completed noble 6 and carter suits and decided to get her involved in some of the fame and glory on Halloween. This build will be for next year and will be as game accurate as possible. The suit will be a Kat B-320 build, with the helmet built using pepakura and the rest of the suit foam. So far I have pepped the helmet and scaled the files to fit her. Here are some pictures...

Looking good so far. Are you doing anything special about the missing arm, or just imagining that's not the case (as your fiance clearly has both of hers)?

HAHA!! Yeah she still has both arms..but for the sake of game accuracy i may have to do some shady things...just kidding! I was gonna do something similar to Lil' Tyrant's Kat build where she used her own patterns to create the robotic arm look.

Looks great!

Thanks Johnny!

Looking good so far. Keep it up.

Thank you Harri51!

So quick update, worked on some of the shoulders last night and came up with a shoulder that was a tad too small. Gonna up the scale by 10% and see what it yields. The shoulder I test built was wayyyy too small, and I was bummed that it came out so tiny. Well...I guess that's just how it goes right? I miss the days of knowing the dimensions for pieces...now that I'm building a new suit for my fiancé, it's back to the "get as close to the desired measurement as possible and keep your fingers crossed" method :p. I'm gonna work on newly scaled shoulder tonight and try to get some pictures up tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Sorry for the double post but I have an update!!! I just finished building the base for both shins and have pictures of the completed shoulders as well...Working on hardening the helmet now, I have a few thin coats of resin down, probably going to hit it up with some fiberglass then a thin layer of rondo on the inside to finish the hardening process. The shins weren't too bad, but scaling the shoulders was a little bit of a guess and check process. My first attempt came out a bit too small so I adjusted the size to 20% bigger and they came out just right. Here are the update pictures so far, enjoy!

When my fiancé gets home tonight i'll have her try them on and take a few pictures to see how they fit. Until next time!

Looking good still. You are doing just fine on your build.

I am constantly impressed by the detail people can attain using foam. It makes me wonder if my pep build will be anywhere near as good.

Thank you sir!

that helmet looks fantastic. great job scaling it!

Thanks! It was a little bit of a challenge..the first helmet came out just an inch too small...Luckily I was smart about it and pepped the top of the helmet first to see how it would fit and was able to scratch it and resize before dedicating too much time (about an hour worth of pep time) to it. The second attempt fit perfectly like you said, and I'm glad I was able to nail it in 2 tries. My first helmet I made for myself too me about 4 tries...and back then I didn't think to pep just part of the helmet to see how it would fit. It wasn't a fun experience to say the least.

I was exactly in your shoes when I was working on my first build. I've found that with a sharp blade and a few reference pics and maybe some hot knife extensions you can actually make some pretty impressive stuff. I find though that the main thing that makes your suit "pop" is the paint job. As long as your base models aren't still showing that "polygon" type look the paint job can make or break a project. As for the detail with foam, you should check out Lil' Tyrant's Kat build...that is some insane detail with foam right there.

That's good advice, thanks. And I have seen her Kat build. I was thoroughly impressed, probably the best in it's class to feature on this site. My armour set is a pep one, though, and there's a minimal amount of foam pieces I'll have to work with - luckily. I had some bad experiences a while back and I still think it's a bitch to work with. We'll see how that goes, though.

Sorry guys haven't updated in a while...my phone broke so I had to resort to using my old phone for pictures...the quality may not be as good but it'll work. So far I've put together the left thigh, the left bicep, both knee guards, both wrist guards (both may have to be redone, they look a little small), both shins, both shoulders, and I'm halfway done with the chest piece. Here are some progress pics so far. I've come to find that taking your time with foam builds (as I rushed my last one) allows you to better decide the angles to cut the foam and results in an overall better looking piece.

I also decided not to take the shortcut method by piecing together multiple stencils so you get one large piece. I have found this has made the pieces more accurate and not so warped. However, I think I may have to redo the thigh piece, I feel that larger pieces result in less joints which results in less places for the piece to become undone. I haven't decided for sure yet, but it would also help in helping me adjust the size as it fits just a tad too tight. The height of the thigh is perfect, so some minor adjustments will be added and then a final decision on whether I want to scrap it and start over will be made.

Alright, that's enough of me talking, here are the pics!

22E5083D-F71B-4492-BE92-28ED5A87F24C_zpsqjpgzmtq.jpg

here is what I was talking about with the "joints" in the thigh file. In my last build, I just put all the templates in this area together and marked off where the other foam pieces were gonna go. Might go with that method...

had to make this adjustment to the bicep piece. Same problem where the height is perfect but the width of the piece is just a tad tight. Still trying to figure out how i'm going to do this with the thigh file, as there are no flat faces on the file like the bicep piece. If anything, it would probably be somewhere on the inside of the leg as that is the most hidden and least exposed.

Finished the chest piece (minus the detail pieces) a couple days ago but I haven't had the time to upload. I was worried that the chest piece was gonna be a bit small but I think it fits perfectly! Had my fiancé try it on with the other pieces that I have done so far and she was having a blast with it. I'm super happy that she likes it way more than she originally thought she would. I think the difference was seeing it go from the 3D render to the 2D shapes and then to finally being able to wear it. Something about putting on the armor just feels right. I attached some clips to the section under the arms so that it's easy to get on and off. Enough of me talking, here are the pictures!

Glad to hear my work is appreciated!

look nice (y)

Thanks anhtrung

UPDATE TIME!!!

So since the last update I've redone the thighs. I've decided that i will make the inner secondary layer out of some sort of fabric-like material so that taking off the thigh pieces will be easier for bathroom breaks. I have also completed the base model of the cod piece. I still have to bring it in a little for it to fit properly, but I think the scale in terms of the width of the band and the size of the front and back plates look alright. Still have to start the left forearm, the right robotic arm, and the boots. Did another test fit tonight with my fiancé wearing what she's gonna wear under her armor. Now for what you've been waiting for...moooarrr pictures!!!

Another DMR pose. I may have to make myself another one...she looks pretty good with this DMR. Still have to work on her M6G Magnum pistol too. I think for longer events she'll probably use this as the DMR tends to get a bit heavy after a while.

Well that looks absolutely spectacular (and not just the armour I'll shut up now).

But seriously, I disappear for a couple weeks and you've got the better half of a Kat build, and it's coming out stellar. You've still got a ways to go, but if you keep up like this it will come out spectacular.

I want to wonder why I'm the only one considering a shoulder strap for their DMR, but I'm just an ODST, not a power-armour wearing supersoldier. We've got to hike around with that stuff, can't just mag-strap it to our backs.
