I never did get around to posting a WIP thread for this. This was a quick project I threw together to have in time for Youmacon. I had to rush it and despite the rushed quality of the build, I got a lot of comments on it! :D

I DID take pictures of some progress I made, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the pics. :p

First knee piece. I managed to cut angles on the small side pieces of the knee piece.
10703874_480502958758430_6888026511822637422_n.jpg10406677_480502972091762_1267174578876279395_n.jpg

All pieces of the knee wrapped in 2mm craft foam and all put together. :) You can also see what the detail looks like at the top.

The butt pouch pictured at top was the first one I made. I thought I scaled it right, but for some reason it seemed too small so I redid it and I decided I liked the new one MUCH better. :p

Progress of the boot cover. I WAS going to use my combat boots, but due to the fact that my shin piece ended up too slim, the shin piece would NOT have fit over my boots so I decided to go with an old pair of work shoes. Worked perfectly, they were comfy AND made me a little taller. hehe Since I was using a different shoe, I also had to slightly modify the boot covers just a little bit.

The finished look! ^_^
10245407_499097903565602_8842877280225756611_n.jpg

My back pack before it was fully assembled. The piece to the left was made out of 3mm foam. For as small as it was, the foam worked perfectly. It wasn't too flimsy and it wasn't hard to work with and put into place. :)
544921_496348233840569_3317918220836684700_n.jpg

All put together with base color. I was going to make it mostly black, but ended up painting it mostly blue with black as detail color.

My hip plates fully assembled. Just missing the detail.
10363560_481295658679160_7145676300870240464_n.jpg

I wrapped my thigh pieces in 2mm craft foam and found this awesome roll of craft foam at Micheals for $8! :D It made it easier so I could wrap them in one piece.
16379_487462051395854_137576100129039743_n.jpg10354241_495314133943979_6465661572316182763_n.jpg10734190_495314143943978_1777282293830847361_n.jpg

I didn't fully think through the final design for the chestpiece that my armor sits on, so the piece you see on the left was the one I THOUGHT I was going to use. After having second thoughts about the final look, I made a new one (right).
P1070959.JPG

Yeah, so this is my chest piece thing. Yeah, I know it looks odd and NOT like the typical ODST chest piece. You will eventually see why. ;) I was NOT even worried about the small gaps on the back side because it was never going to be seen.
10645259_493106044164788_8044420735435674361_n.jpgP1070961.JPG

This is what the back of the chest piece looked like after I wrapped part of it with 2mm craft foam and put the back detail piece in place and painted it. Can't even see those small gaps now, can ya? ;) :p hehe
10702142_493453880796671_5274102556706734305_n.jpg

I do NOT think I have seen anyone else make this. Figured it out yet? ;)
P1070952.JPG

Figured it out now? ;) hehe
P1070995.JPG

LOL Isn't it awesome what a little bit of improvising can do? It's something that I seem to be pretty good at when it comes to doing this. It was old shirt I had that was a thremal texture and since I didn't really wear it anymore, it worked PERFECTLY for the shoulder pieces! :D I used pillow stuffing to stuff it and just used hot glue to seal the ends shut. :p

Awesome to see you back up and building. Wow it looks very very nice a clean so far. looking forward to even more.

The completed chestplate.

This is the piece of craft foam that I cut out to eventually wrap around my chestplate. It is 2mm craft foam.
10712705_482887465186646_5066917392734745484_n.jpg

These would be the little detail pieces for the chestplate.
10670253_482887485186644_1869602315129144358_n.jpg

And here is what the chestplate looked like after it was all wrapped. ^_^ Having a heat gun REALLY comes in handy. >_< hehe
10671228_484920941649965_3966101733766921099_n.jpg

Remember that odd piece that I don't think anyone else has ever made? Here is the backside of it. Those black things are pieces of nylon strapping. They help to reinforce the buckles I have so that the tension and stress the buckles would be under would NOT rip out or through the foam. The base of this piece was created out of neoprene. The detail pieces you see on the front side were made with 2mm craft foam and the little area above that, before it's just plain craft foam, was made with neoprene as well.
1376460_499054400236619_8820247933114833802_n.jpg

First test fit! :D Yeah, I know it probably looks REALLY weird, but the end result will BLOW YOUR MIND! lol :p
10345555_499031213572271_4748173180688360172_n.jpg

This is my first attempt on the shin. I was happy with it at first, but then I saw Hugh's ODST shin file. I REALLY like his model of it, but there were parts that seemed too confusing to do out of foam. Since I was running out of time, I decided to just stick with this model, but I scrapped THIS shin piece, edited the model in Blender to fit better to MY leg and made new shins.
10660137_480502995425093_5040432501504463774_n.jpg

Here is the starting progress of the new shins. I decided to work on both at the same time. Seemed to go a little quicker that way. ^_^
10603234_496753463800046_5564676698332871023_n.jpg

Here is a test fit of the new shin. The scale does seem off and it fits really snug on my leg. In a way, that wasn't such a bad thing because once I had my pants on and got all the armor on, my shins stayed in place REALLY good! :)
ODST_Shin_fit.jpg

Here are the little kidney plate things. These were wrapped in 2mm craft foam as well.
10632680_481295648679161_2540592926079722298_n.jpg

THIS is what the color of my armor was ALMOST going to look like. I started to think that it seemed TOO light for an ODST. :p
10592852_487623441379715_6812393386875947408_n.jpg

Here is the NEW blue color I went with. I can NOT tell you what color blue it is since it is a custom color that I mixed.
65528_495294140612645_3975817577774698120_n.jpg

The finished thighs! Just need a paint job. The funny part.......since I wrapped them in black craft foam, I NEVER even paint that part. I ONLY painted the grey neoprene to black. :p I was also kind of running out of time to do too much more painting. I still had to worry about strapping it all together. D:
10410542_500214016787324_6692425069487420230_n.jpg1907951_500214006787325_5774942567344361773_n.jpg

The finished shin piece! :D In the first picture, the blue does look lighter than how it actually looks. The second picture is actually a bit more true to color.
68118_499080790233980_8215561772540529653_n.jpg604086_499080796900646_8846952806302992977_n.jpg

The begining of a forearm. :p
10553346_499486586860067_2550164140444104998_n.jpg

Got the forearm fully assembled. :) For that main, crazy detailed piece, I actually decided to create my OWN template because I did NOT care to work with the template that I had printed for it from the pepakura file. I looked at LOTS of reference pictures and managed to make templates that were MUCH easier to work with. In the end, that detail piece consists of a total of ONLY 6 pieces.
1527054_499854666823259_8836532200931515624_n.jpg1966919_499854680156591_784616707301604608_n.jpg10670100_499854653489927_8702763165634462812_n.jpg

This is a test fit of the forearm piece. I ultimately felt that it was too small. However, the top picture looks like the forearm is in place to where it should be. In the bottom pic, if I let it go all the way down to my wrist, it looks like it's too small. My glove in the top pic holds it up in place. In the end, I did NOT even wear those gloves since I had found a better pair that looks a little more like the ODST ones. XD I also decided that MAYBE it wasn't such a bad idea having them smaller than they should be because it helped with mobility and I was able to bend at the elbow MUCH better.
10614204_500087490133310_8986563635221594222_n.jpg

This is from when I was trying to figure out placement for the butt pouch. XD In the reference images I looked at, the butt pouch is right under that part of the chestpiece, but my chestpiece seemed to be higher up my back than it should have been. If I made it lower, it seemed like it was in the right spot, but I think my chestpiece was designed wrong. I had already really modified the original one to begin with. I just decided to keep it low. It felt better, comfort wise, to have it there anyway. :p
10610480_499038253571567_2759651946355948715_n.jpg

SPECIAL THANKS to a friend of mine from facebook, he hooked me up with this helmet since it was too small for him. I fell in love with it the moment I took it out of the box! ^_^ hehe

The helmet had to be repainted, obviously, in order to match the rest of my armor. :p
1385414_497547013720691_8314147042241289796_n.jpg

Some of the nice little cushion I added to the inside. I added the piece at the top of the helmet and the very comfy piece that would be behind my head.
1897790_494960110646048_2620436647681461521_n.jpg

ANOTHER very wonderful friend (facebook) gave me this! :O :D I was shocked that he said he would give it to me. I was VERY impressed when I saw it. Turns out that the original was made by Lee. For those of you that don't know him, Lee does AMAZING wood work when it comes to making Halo weapons. The one I have is a cast of the one he made. Apparently he only made 30 of these.
10154962_496213013854091_5635736612929781521_n.jpg

Once I got a little further on my build, I decided to do another test fit with my new goodies! ^_^ hehe :p
1460294_499095493565843_7889018003036358751_n.jpg

I will second that TripNineFX, Thats a nice trick to making the foam come out smoother.

Nice work so far man, look forward to seeing more.

Here is a closeup of the belt. In the picture of my first test fit, the belt didn't look like this. I ended up repainting it. I actually used NAIL POLISH to paint it. :p hahahaaa
10696195_499854700156589_4345944114349616568_n.jpg

This is the stuff I used. The black nail polish is a crackle paint. When it dries, it creates a crackle effect as you can see on the belt. This will ONLY occur when painted over any color nail polish. The other nail polish is just a nice silver which I also used that silver to paint some of the black plastic buckles so they look more metal and it also helped to make them pop more. I even used it to paint the buckle detail pieces on the thighs.
1467251_499877496820976_8536807965420247611_n.jpg

For anyone that is curious, here is a better shot of the first butt pouch I made. I didn't use it and I still have it. I won't ever be using this.
1235242_484144881727571_5927084930331478635_n.jpg

This is an inside shot of showing the velcro attachment I made in order to attach the back pack. I bought an industrial strength velcro. It help up really well. I had to first attach the back pack before putting the chest piece on. The chest piece can be put on like a jacket. Not hard at all. ^_^ :)
10659450_499877510154308_3664044832473433561_n.jpg

Here is another picture of the finished helmet. I added the black detail piece on the top of the helmet. I made it out of neoprene and 3mm craft foam then just hot glued it in place. :p
7585_498418016966924_4749136187356502639_n.jpg

Well, that was all the progress pictures I have to really show.

I guess It's time for the FUN pictures! :D

In the end, I had to really rush my build since I still had to try and strap everything together so I had to try and just get a little more paint work done and ended up leaving out some detail. Since I do NOT plan on selling this, mostly because it's custom fit to MY body shape, I intend on making improvements and possibly doing a different paint job, but keeping the color. I really liked my custom blue mix. ^_^ :p

All pics were taken at the Renaissance Center in Detroit for Youmacon 2014. :)

It was my FIRST time doing this and it was SO MUCH FUN! :D I hope to do it again. :p :)

I was also given a couple of stickers for my armor. I have a smaller one on my chestplate. ^_^
View attachment 5668

Speaking of my chestplate, I managed to turn it into a functional pouch at the last minute. I realized that I wanted to have my camera with me, but I dind't want to carry it around where it could get bumped or be in the way. I still had some left over neoprene so I cut it to kind of fit the back side of my chestplate and there is enough room for my camera, money and any other small things I wanted to have with me. :p

View attachment 5669View attachment 5670

I fully glued along the bottom so nothing would fall out and I only glued the sides halfway up. Due to how close my chestplate fit to my chest piece, I didn't have to worry about losing anything. This is why having my forearm pieces smaller came in handy because I had the mobility to reach in and grab my camera for pictures and easily put it back. ^_^

Those straps you see on either side is how I attached it to the chestpiece. Basically did it the same way as I did for the backpack. Never fell off and it held up really good. :)

Gah! The lines, so clean!
Living up to that name, goddess indeed!
This came out really well, great progress shots and thoughtful descriptions of your process. I am very taken with your method of wrapping in the 2mm foam, will be applying that, so thanks for sharing :thumbsup

Hey everyone! :D

Well, I recently decided to do some MAJOR upgrades to my ODST. I think it looks MUCH better than before, but could still use some work. :p I plan on sticking with this color scheme now too. hehe

The only new things are the entire torso area and I made shoulder armor. The sniper is NOT mine. It's a prop I borrowed from a friend while I was at Midwest Media Expo. I kind of think I want to make my own now because I think I look pretty sweet with a sniper. haha

Great pics! i recognize thorn, but i dont recognize the other spartan. It looks like you guys had fun :)
If you do indeed make a sniper rifle i look forward to seeing the build.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone that didn't look badass wearing a suit of armour and carrying a 14.5mm AT rifle. Spectacular work.
