First Foam Build

Not open for further replies.
Ok so over the weekend I was house sitting so I didn't get a huge amount of time, just a few ours on Friday and then again Sunday afternoon, I was able to come up with a way to hold the shoulder in position relative to the chest, its just the same large clip that Ive used for my main fasteners in the chest and belt, but up under the shoulder in the chest there is a sliding plastic brace, that was hinged with luggage strapping and then the main strap holding the Shoulder piece was looped through that. I will post pics of this set up later, but this allows me to put the chest on, clip the shoulder on further down my arm then pull it up into place and have it stay there. Ive also made a start on the forearms, but I started on the right arm instead of the left, which is the side that I have made the shoulder on, I will post these pics but then go through and complete the other side in its entirety before posting for that side, as it will be much the same process as the left arm.

This is looking really good and the lights are epic :D Hopefully I can figure out how to rig LEDs when I start on mine. I know we have a ton in the basement that can be used.

Okie Doke, Ive started adding in smaller details to the forearms and creating custom templates so I can repeat these details for the left arm too.

Everything is looking amazing! I too, have been on here for over a year and am just now getting to upping my post count/adding photos. It's hard for me because I'm not at a physical computer a lot...

Hard to believe that this is your first foam build, this is looking fantastic! Great use of the lights too! Ive been thinking of putting them in mine when im done with my armor

Not sure what a PDO is but if it's what I think, as in a template file then no, I started by modifying a pep file, originally set for normal paper or card pepping. Then as I worked I figured out other parts and details on the fly, only making rough templates on cardboard as to repeat the process for the opposite side. How ever at a later stage I may possibly be able to digitise these templates and turn into a downloadable file for all to use.

This is the method I'll probably be using to do mine as well once I can start but in the mean while I have to figure out ways around the limitations of CB. It's not as flexible as foam or paper and therefore can't be bent in the usual method due to the flute. This was the biggest issue I faced when I made my cardboard moth in first semester 3d design as it had a number of rounded regions on the torso, etc. the E flute was easier to work with in second semester's Industrial design class but I was still faced with similar challenges as my light was a circular base in construct. (We had two very specific cardboard based projects through the course of the school year, a cardboard insect model and then we had to design a nightlight for children- I was the ambitious idiot as per usual who bit off a little bit more than the time constraints could allow so I was working right up until before the class on a nightlight with moving parts and an aperture based rig.)

I know the feels, I too was very ambitious in highschool and I was in similar classes as well, how ever I had that one teacher who got me, he always encourage d me but made sure I was following the schools expectations. I'm 27 now so it was a while ago but I'll always remember one thing he said to me, he your always thinking outside the box, unfortunately the school just wants the box. Aim high guys be ambitious with any and all projects with in reason but don't let anybody tell you can't do it.

XD This was fairly recently for my college program. We're out for the summer and I'm switching from the arts to business for a little while. My 3D teacher loved that I wanted to go out of the normal bounds but it sometimes caused more issue for me than good. I got far too many glue burns and late nights from the two cardboard projects than I should have because I'm that smart one who loves to stick her fingers in hot glue (Don't do it it hurts, I'm just dumb) and I tried to go crazy with what I was doing. I'll see if I can find some of the stuff I did in my folders some where. I know I took pictures of at least the bug and my wood/twine body armor. The nightlight didn't survive the 6:30 PM shuttle home.

Okie Dokie Artichokie, just another quick update, Ive completed 98% of both Forearms construction phase, Ive deliberately left the elbow end open for now, until I figure out what padding and or other stuff I want to add to the inside. I have plans for adding some sort of cooling in the forearms too, maybe some sort of cold pack that sits directly above the underside of the wrists to cool the blood running close to the skin in this area, not sure yet shall have to brainstorm some ideas later. I will probably move on and create the other shoulder now and post again once this is ready for paint. Hand plates Im going to wait until I have purchased the gloves first, so I can match for size and position and all that jazz.

Hey all, I am back at it, I am so so sorry to those following this build, as I am constantly AFK for months at a time. Life gets busy and motivation to take myself downstairs to the workshop comes and goes so quickly. But I promise you I am back on track with this build now and have some more progress to show ya'll. As most of my techniques used through out this project remain the same and as Ive pretty much covered all if not most of them in previous posts I wont go into to much detail with my processes, however if there is a specific part you wish to know how Ive created or finished it, just let me know. Also since my last post I now have a new toy in the shop, I was given a Scroll Saw as a gift and it has been an invaluable tool in speeding up the cutting and shaping process for the foam. The cuts it makes in the EVA boards are clean and easy to glue.

Here is the update. I now have both shoulders and forearms done and ready for paint. I also cut off the back end of my first shoulder and remade it to match the opposite side which i changed my approach with templates on and it came out much neater and a better fit to my arms. I will add smaller details and lighting after the paint process.

That's some mighty fine foam work you've done, there! Your painting is incredible, and the level of detail is just right!

I like your idea for the led light defuser.

Keep being awesome!

All Righteeeee Then, so after making it all the way through the painting process with both shoulders and forearms I decided that I was painting them to dark to match the rest of he armor :facepalm. And I was also having problems with movement when I tried it all on sooooo I made some adjustments with the forearms to allow me to move a little easier. Also thought that the forearms were a little too big in comparison to the shoulders, so I used my hot knife to cut down 2 existing seams and took out about an in of material and re glued everything, I had to make a few entirely new parts as during the cutting and removing process there was nothing I could do to save those pieces. then tested out my adjustments, and now it all works great, so I began the paint process again, not quit finished it yet but its on its way.

In this photo you can see how the shoulder is a lot darker, for some reason when I was doing the dirt wash stage I used a little more black then normal and well yeah the results were as shown, so reapplied a base coat to the shoulders and began again.
