Spartanrhonin55 Introduction

Howdy 405th Members! SpartanRhonin55 here. Fairly new to Halo costume building and am eager to get started. I am 28 years old out of Portland Oregon. Been a fan of Halo for a long time.... What Brings me here is that I enjoy being an active member of my local Community and also the many events that go on here. Comicon for starters, is where people in local communities join together to appreciate the many super heroes and comic legends out today. I see a lot of people come in with awesome costumes some made from foam and/or pepakura and others of different other materials... What they do is very intriguing and makes me want to do my own work on costumes...

A few questions I have as I have decided on Foam Armor as my project material of choice, are...

1. Where can I find information on how to build halo armor using foam...
2. Tutorials or videos with step by step instructions or close too...

If I have any more questions, I will make them available to ask them in another post..

I too am new to this, the forum and armour making itself. I you take some time to look around this forum there's LOADS of information waiting to be found. The stickies in particular are amazingly useful. They are the threads that are stuck to the top of many sections, they hold a great deal of information, I used (and still do) these a lot. You might want to spend a few weeks looking around, getting to know the site and the people on here before blindly asking questions like this one.

Also what made you choose foam?
I'm personally thinking pepakura. But I don't know a great deal about foam (or rather I know less about foam than I do pepakura lol XD ) so that may be why.

In my opinion, this is why foam is better than pep:

* Lighter. Hardened pepakura is a lot heavier than foam and it does wear on you after wearing it for a while
* More durable/flexible. You can do so much more when wearing a foam suit than you can with a pep one because foam doesn't break as easily.
* Cheaper (kind of)... this may or may not be a big deal, but foam suits CAN be made for much less than a pep one and a really nice foam suit is still probably less than a pep one
* Faster to build - you form the foam and glue it together and then you seal and paint. There's no hardening, bondo, sanding, etc.
* None (or much less) of the hazardous fumes that go with fiberglassing
* Possibility for the same or even improved LOD (level of detail) in a much faster time frame than using pep - by building up layers of different thicknesses of foam you can get really nice, detailed pieces in a fraction of the time a UHD pep file would take to assemble. See Chiefbzd's build(s) vs Robot Chickens - they're both awesome builds but the foam suit takes a fraction of the time and has pretty much the same LOD.
* Easy repairs - if something breaks, you can just hot glue it back together on the spot so a hotfix kit for conventions is much easier to have for foam.

Now, the main downside of foam that I can see is twofold - first that there aren't as many foam-centric pep files yet and second that it probably takes more "artistic skill" to get the same detail as a pep file because foam templates aren't as detailed and you have to freehand the little details if you want them. But that second point is really just a matter of practice and with enough time put in you can get the same results with both with the same level of artsiness.

I was thinking it would be lighter!! Didn't really consider time as a factor tbh suppose it makes sense though.
But from what you have told me, think I will stick to my original thought of pep. As I have very little (or zero) artistic flair and peping seems to get most of it done for me XD
