I've used Elmer's wood glue and thin fabric on cardboard but it came out less attractive and looked like a 5 year old made it. Is there any way for it to look good and not use resin

If you build it up like that on the inside of the pep where it won't show, it should strengthen it up pretty well, though it may take several layers. You're essentially making paper mache, and several others have done so on these forums, try a search to see how others have done it.

This thread has a good tutorial.

Make a small test piece and try different techniques.

Drywall compound on the outside may be used to fill in gaps or round out square edges, but I have not tried it. Again, try it on a test piece. Carpenters glue over the drywall compound will give it a nice smooth finish for painting.

I'm using Gorilla Wood Glue. So far, I've had great feedback (You can see my build thread for pictures). So far, I've only used the glue. I'm planning to apply fibreglass mat soon, but I just haven't had time or money. I'll let you know how it goes.
