More fun build stuff to play with as Donut is needing some more toys to tote .

I was chatting with Exalted in person a few days ago and had one of those lights in my head switch on.
We were looking at weapons to build ect,
Ive done lots of stuff with optics and lasers and fiber optics .

I went to the Digikey website and found this lovely LED array.
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/SBT-90-WDLS-F71-NB150/SBT-90-WDLS-F71-NB150-ND/4755821

I have access to some potent 18650 cells that can sink 20 amps or more at 3.7 V per cell .
2 in series is near 150watts of 30 sec pulsed discharge.
At 40 plus Lumen per watt of most LEDs that means I can beam up 6000 Lumen !
Yes LEDs of that size DO need a serious heatsink ! but they are pulsed duty . 20 Sec per 5 Min . for cons so I can pose ect,

Ill need to do some thermal math but I suspect I can just make it passive with some metal .
for the blade I have a novel idea

light pipe! .
PDF on it .http://www.lumex.com/images/Lumex-WhatIsALightPipe-Part1.pdf

SO polycarb is not the same index of refraction as acrylic. Fiber we use in out day to day life works on the idea of TIR .

One part is poly One acrl the light will bounce in the inner parts and leak out but only enough to glow and give that spark effect in it

OR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a contact in the HV effects industry who does these
http://www.capturedlightning.com/frames/lichtenbergs.html

I may see if Burt can crakkel up some blades ! ( or at least some inserts.

Its CAD time!

Here is the FILE Ill base my first layout on as a proof of concept

so here is a Link to what Ive tweaked and moded for nerf mods. along with some props and the like

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

That all seems pretty straightforward. Should be interesting to see.

Happen to have a link to those high-current 18650s? All the ones I've seen are current limited to stop them exploding.

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

The reviews on that page just opened up a whole world of >1amp 18650s to me! I'm not a fan of the flat top-ness, but it's another good data point in my research. Thanks man!

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

This sounds AWESOME! Can't wait to it finished, Good luck.

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

I cringe at the thought of that much current being sucked from a 18650 .

OK some pics. Ive put the handle on the printer . Here are some CAD screen shots from this morning.

Steps are to remove the fancy handle and make it hold a Cell .
then heal the handle
after that remove the blades so I can mess with the innards of the handle to mount stuff
and also make a flat CAD for a laser cutter to make some blades

001remove the middle.png
002 Rebuild the middle to hold cellls.png

hollow handle cut with 800s.png this is a cut view to the insides .

EDIT

time to grab some fiber from FRYS up the way. .

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

Ok a short video on the progress

Ive got some 800 Lumen LEDs here to play with for the 1st gen.

Ive got the blade file on the PC to send to the CO2 cutter up the street .

handle print looked OK on PC but the print was VERY warped as the filament had water in it..

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

picked up a LiFePO4 cell . time to build a charge system and discharge .
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10401 that will do !

PICAXE for the controls

https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10803

2 analog inputs for the temp Feedback and that will switch a MOSFET

no point cooking LEDs

a slight LED change . Iam gonna do some smaller LEDs .
Ends up 3KLumens is WAY to much for the light density I want .
400 lumens per blade is more then enough

p[arts are on there way

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

as I wait for the parts to arrive for the LEDs and stuff I have Drafted a Activation Index.

FRYs has some Really nice EL tape that is begging to be used . and I need to burn off my old green PLA .

started the print. 4 parts . this is the first one. shuld take a day.

Print one is done . 2 more are on the bed

Here it is with the inset EL strip.

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

I love your progress so far on the activation index!! Makes me want to warm up my 3d printer and follow your lead :D

For the sword:
What is your thinking on the fiber optics? I have always dreamed of using some for the various points of light on the energy sword handle.

Not really a fan of light pipes for lighting the energy sword blade. I tried and failed multiple times before abandoning acrylic and instead using a vacuformed blade with internal LED rails.

Edge lit acrylic trial and errors:

If you are interested, I have a part list for my energy sword electronics here: http://www.westaby.net/2015/05/energy-sword-2015/

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

OK had a few snags with the light pipe . It does work but I need to mirror it prior to bonding it to the main blade.

On another topic ,,,,,, battle rifle !

with the STL from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:350708
Ive modded the STL's upper handle and back butt ( butt still printing ) to fit a Nerf blaster .

Added some paint and volla

Pre sanding

Post sanding . I was at 100 mA out of a 1A normal current on the LED so I dont blind me or the cam.

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

Thanks Griff!! that was a fun build . * I really just wanted a excuse to use the EL tape Ive seen at FRYS for the past year) ;)

Ive just picked up a NERF Stampede blaster to mod in to a AR, goodwill 8 dolla !

The BRs butt needs to be printed and attached * 18Hours of it * but armor comes first ,

Meanwhile the AR is a very light mod ! so it wont tie up the printer .

the rear is just a little bit of bondo . and the front is some carved foamboard

should take a day or 2

upper gap filled and lower rear gap filled

foam with bondo over it .

Re: 3000 lumen energy sword and other toys for Donut.

Thanks!

* Pic is pre sand and form W/ bondo*

Ive tried a idea . I used great stuff foam and saran wrap to form the front grip area.

( you can handle the wet foam with ease this way and it wont stick to you ! )
It fills in the orange part and expands WAY tooo much in a good way !
It dries really fast.
I then used a bare hack saw blade to slice off the excess
Sanded and added bondo

This is way more simple then packing in foam board to gap fill.
Its all foam in the end right!?
