Hey 405th

so, iv started my Jun build and thought I'd put some pics up as I go. It's my first time working with foam, iv always made stuff with pep and GRP before but after a few evenings working with the foam I'm really enjoying it. Plasti-dip is on order ready for the weekend.

anyway, pics arnt great because I wasn't sure I would complete the build...it was more of a test really but here we go

Thanks for the kind words guys.

in all honesty it's not as close to game accurate as I had planned, but for my first go at working with foam I'm happy.

to get all the angles right (or what I though was right) I made the cut with the blade at right angles and then used a barrel sander on my dremmal to get it to the right angle. I used l3x's foam template and tried to make both left and right pieces at the same time so I could check them against each other to keep them even.

i have used hot glue in places but a lot of the seams are glued with contact adhesive because it gives a tighter fit between the pieces and it's seriously strong!!!!!!!

iv found during the build I always need to be thinking a few steps ahead... Most the torso is two layers thick and where possible iv overlapped pieces to increase the strength of the join.

To much work to do tonight to get anything done on the build but I'll put pics up tomorrow :)

Construction is complete... Wish me luck, it's time for plasti-dip

So this is after 3 coats of plasti-dip spray.£15 per can is a lot but the finish is really nice.

I wish I had filled in the gaps a little more as some of the seams are visible... Anyone know if you can use caulk over plasti-dip before painting?????

Also...paint????? Should I use spray paint or get some acrylic? I seem to remember spacemeat using house paint any advice welcome

really nice! i have been wanting to do a Jun, but i figured i already had too many sets of armor im thinking of doing it again. As far as paint goes i prefer spray paint or airbrush

For a base color you can use enamel spray paint. For black washing and weathering though, you want acrylic I believe.

that's great, thx guys...now to find a colour to match Jun...Hmmmm????

any one know if I can use caulk over the plasti-dip before I paint? I really want to fill in a couple of seam lines but I don't want to damage any of the work iv done so far :-?

thanks NaasadTal :) I made the helmet last year, there is a build thread showing the construction although I don't think I put any pic's up of the finished item.

Iv made up a small test piece of foam, coated it in plati-dip and once its dry I will fill in the gaps I made with the caulk and see how it goes... will keep you posted

Your build is looking awesome so far. Your foam work is super clean and i love the battle damage. Can't wait to see more.

Happy weekend everyone :)

so, iv been playing around with filler and paint during the week testing out different stuff and iv found out loads...

1) you can put caulk (in my case generic own brand flexible filler) over plasti-dip and it sticks really well, just as well as it sticks to the EVA

2) you can paint over the caulk with enamel and acrylic paint and it goes on well... But not as well as it sticks to plasti-dip

3) on the foam at least acrylic paint goes on as well as enamel and seems to be almost as hard wearing after it's given over night to dry fully

4) acrylic paint can bend MUCH further than emamel without cracking... On my test piece I bent it back on its self 180 degrees and the paint didn't crack (although the foam wrinkled)

so the up shot of all that, I went back and filled in the bigger seam lines with the caulk and have started painting with acrylic paint, I'm doing it by hand because there is a wider range of colours to choose from and it's a good bit cheaper than spray...

Still loads to go but this is what it looks like right now
