Jme's H3 MKVI Foam build

I'm here to let you know that this build is not dead.

The last month has been taken up with gap filling and glue washing (and a little bit of vacation)

I have now moved on to smooth cast. I was able to get the first coat on all the pieces tonight and am already very pleased with how smooth and solid the pieces feel. I plan on doing 2-3 thin coats with sanding in between.

I am making good use of the drying line I put in the garage.

Coming along well. Looks good.

Thanks, I was excited to start the smooth cast!

PVC filler? Also can you be more specific on the Smooth Cast.....Which one?

I am using Smooth Cast 65D (basically using xrobot's method). Plasti Dip is really expensive here.

I used Flex Seal caulk as my gap filler and then glue washed with PVA (haha, did I say PVC?).

I am probably going to put on 2-3 thin coats if 65D with light sanding in between.

No, you did say PVA.......but my brain registered it as PVC.....What is PVA?

White glue (I used Elmers).

I got the second coat of smooth cast on tonight after sanding.

Working outside, at night, by lantern light and headlamp.

If all turns out well I may be able to get to paint after some more light sanding!

Let's hope so. It will look good painted, what colour are you going to paint it?

I am going with classic Master Chief.

Ugh.

So the Smooth Cast isn't setting up as I had hoped.

The smaller parts, forearms, shoulders, helmet and boots, are looking fantastic. But on the larger pieces, the smooth cast is not covering and I have bare spots. I think I am putting it on too thin. I am going to focus on those larger pieces and try to get the Smooth Cast to cover. If it doesn't work I will get some spray-on Plasti Dip to cover those areas.

Just means a little more time before painting.

So the smooth cast is a total bust.

If I put it on thin, I don't get coverage.

If I put it on thick, I get bumps and divots (it won't self-level like it is supposed to. This may be because it is so warm here - even though I am applying it within temperature tolerances). Sanding becomes much like working with bondo, except that when you put the next layer on, you can't be sure it is going to fill in the spot you want.

What it does do, really well, is fill-in imperfections.

So, new plan. I am going to use the Smooth Cast to fill in any leftover gaps. Sand it down. And then use Evakura's polyurethane hardening method (Evakura was kind enough to message with me with some tips).

I tested the polyurethane on a forearm last night and it seems to be hardening and smoothing just fine. I will wait until it is fully cured, but if all is good I will use 4 coats of polyurethane and a final coat of Plasti Dip for the hardening.

If anyone is wondering why I didn't just use Plasti Dip to begin with, it is $22 a can here.

The journey continues...

$22 cans of Plasti Dip are the worst part of being a Canadian cosplayer. Luckily there's one store local to Victoria that cuts a deal to cosplayers for $19. Ugh...

New toy arrived (literally).

I purchased this Nerf Recon off eBay and plan to mod it with a grip guard and paint job to look like an M6.

I went with the Recon because I eventually want to do a Dredd build and the Recon is easily modded into a lawgiver ( especially if I make the grip guard removeable).

One purchase, two purposes.
