I've just finished off my ODST armour and have been going to photo days and conventions in the last month using a Jasman Plasma Pistol, ewww gross covvy tech I know, but have decided that I've got a weekend puppy sitting with nothing much else to do I should make a more suiting weapon for an elite trooper. I spent a bit of time fiddling around with Inkscape this evening and plan on getting everything underway sometime tomorrow night.

I've got a load of foam, my trusty rotary tool and a butt load of X-Acto blades ready to go. See you all on the other side!

Hi, TurboCharizard! Your inkscape drawing looks good!

I'm looking at making the same pistol from black foam core. I've printed off the photo from halopedia to use as a template:
http://www.halopedia.org/M6C/SOCOM

I'm having trouble with the scale. On a single page, I get a pistol with a length of 10 inches, which is a bit smaller than the 10.5 mentioned on the halopedia. The first thing I noticed was that at that scale, I don't see how I can get my hand through it! The next version has an overall length of about 15.5 inches, which is now too big, but the handgaurd opening is 3.75 inches, which is big enough for my hand.

Do you have suggestions on how big this is supposed to be?

Thanks!

I ran into the same issue of scale to be honest. The length was accurate to the specs on Halopedia and made it feel like a peashooter. I ended up scaling everything up by 33% to have a length just under 14" and a more reasonable grip.

The bonus with this size was that I could salvage a trigger from a NERF blaster and not have to carve anything.

The M6 is currently on my desk at home with Kwik Seal curing so if you're curious on scale to human hands I can upload some pictures tonight.

Super easy build, might as well run through all the found parts that went into this because it was a major part of the fun for me.

It started with (6") 1/2" diameter ABS piping and a micro-flashlight from the dollar store.

13653103_917471798396630_8565896416456099940_o.jpg

Proceeded headfirst into the realm of silly with (1) 3/4" bowed washer, a plastic screw cover from a shelf (shhh, don't tell the missus) and the cap from the dish soap.

And then I went full ham with the following shopping list

(14) finishing nails
(2) set screws
(4) metal screws
(4) washer headed screws
(2) old bearings from longboard wheels
(4") sprues from Kings of War minis
(1) salvaged trigger from a Nerf Jolt (RIP)
(1) medium sized googly eye

And in terms of scale because I'm apparently terrible at aligning my work in progress photos on the self-healing mat the final piece is 13 3/4" with the spacing in the grip being 3 1/2" which may or may not work for you but I've got plenty of room with a fairly medium sized hand.

I'm currently waiting for the rain to stop so I can Plasti Dip this and paint it for a con on the weekend. Will toss in a glamour shot of the finished prop and maybe one or two that are full body shots that show scale to someone who is 5' 9" and fully armoured up.

Nice,

I printed out your template on legal size paper, which came out at about 12.5". I glued it to a piece of cardboard for a low-fi test for fit. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to work on the real thing this week.
Yours turned out better :)

A comparison to 'Ol Reliable the TiPX that I used to help me size everything accordingly.

And for good measure a glamour shot of some good old fashioned cowboy style gunslinging.

Because it was a long day at work and I didn't feel like doing much really I made up a quick build guide for the prop.

M6C_SOCOM Schematic.png

Going off of what is already posted, the stencils can be cut up as required to make the pieces shown.

Blue sections are final constructed pieces to show the overall finished prop.
Light grey sections are 2mm craft foam.
Dark grey sections are 0.5" EVA foam.
Dashed sections remove 0.25" internally for fittings.
Crossed sections are points to pre-drill for extra detail fittings.

Beautiful.
I'll probably try to make this in a couple of days. I think it'll go along nice with my ODST. Speaking of ODST however, yours looks absolutely perfect. Got any more pictures? I'd love to see them. =)

Thanks, I had a load of fun building it over the last two months and learned even more for the Mk II version of the armour. Right now I've only got a few pictures with some trickling in from a photographer friend who took some during a recent convention. We've got plans for a night time shoot which is a bit more suitable for an ODST so expect to see some more in the not so distant future.

I got caught saying "Cheers" at the con pretty consistently when people would compliment the props and armour so we went with the Tracer victory pose.

This looks great! Awesome job :)
Thanks, it took quite some time and a fair bit of rum to get to where it's at today.

Right now it's a work in progress though because now that I have a full suit I'm at the stage where I can build replacement parts for the more troublesome pieces or ones that I know have flaws and have just hidden/buried under other detail.

Gotta constantly be improving on it!

I am guessing the dark grey sections are 2 layers of eva? or more or less?

Yes, that image shows all required pieces per each half and is mirrored to form the other side. A few details change in the underslung section between the halfs but are otherwise a perfect mirror.
