I thought I'd send out a notice for others in case anyone else has recently struggled with Rustoleum Light Gray Auto Primer: I could be mistaken, but I suspect that it has been reformulated and no longer works properly with plastic. I experienced this problem under the exact same conditions I have always used for this paint for over the last 10 years. Very suddenly it's crazing like... crazy.

:/ I ruled out surface dust, temperature, humidity, surface prep, heaviness of coat... and the crazing stayed consistent. I couldn't find any reason for the behavior, I just had to switch to a different primer (Rustoleum 2x Primer for Plastic). When a product you've been using without fault for that long suddenly develops an issue that you can't rule out, I have to cast suspicion toward the manufacturer. If anyone else can shed some light on this, I'd love to know more about it, but in the meantime the other primer I've switched to is working nicely... though it doesn't sand nearly as well. :p

I use that same primer all the time for touch up painting car parts (both metal and plastic), and have never had an issue.

Did you try and buy another can from another store to see if it was just maybe that particular can? Who knows, it could just be a bad batch or something. But if you have, and it did the same thing, then that would definitely suck.

I just primed my helmet with this and had the same issue. I was able to sand it down with no issue except wasted time

That would explain why the last PC case I was working on turned out weird, might be a bad batch at the manufacturer's.
