A Noobs attempt at "unconventional" wisdom

Things I've learned. Having used the Pepakura/fiberglass method for the first time this year to create my sons' Halo costumes I thought I would relay some of what I learned as a noob stepping out in his first major Halo build (actually 3 builds). *Much of this information already exists in...

    My 3 sons continued-Halo-ween parade

I typically sculpt and vacuum form my costumes. Alternatively, I've used craft foam. This is the first time I used the Pepakura fiberglass method. I have to say, it was much harder than foam, but easier than hand sculpting. You hit the nail on the head though, ALOT of work.

Thanks. I used Modge Podge after heat-sealing the foam with a heat gun. To get the high sheen on my oldest son's chest plates I primed it with Gesso after heat-sealing. I've also gotten pretty good results with Elmer's glue diluted with water, although I didn't use that technique here since...

HALOween 2011 (post pics of your costumes)

Not really mine, but I made them. Here are my 2 youngest boys, decked out in their Haloween best. Here is my oldest as an ODST.

No, heat wasn't the problem, since it was about 40F. The issue was mobility. My 2 youngest were not used to being unable to lift their arms above their chests. Moreover, running in armor can be quite a challenge.

    My 3 sons continued-Halo-ween parade

Thanks everyone. With Halloween less than a day away and the weather showing temps in the mid to low 30s, I've spent the last few days after the school parade glueing fleece into the armor to keep my boys nice and warm. I also could not resist... I added some led lights to the helms..

@CoolC- already there my friend. Two years ago it was stormtrooper armor and last year it was Batman. This year they wanted Halo after my oldest started playing ODST. @Startekstar - the green is Krylon Italian Olive. The red is Valspar burgundy. I battle damaged the red armor with a...

    My 3 sons continued-Halo-ween parade

After an almost 24 hour marathon, I finished my boys Halo armor just in time for their Haloween parade. Here is my oldest gearing up as an ODST. My middle child as a Red Spartan. My youngest. Thanks to all the members of the 405th. No way could I have done this without your invaluable...

Help:why do I need Fiberglassing for my helmet and stuff

There are a variety of ways to make the armor. Fiberglassing provides strength and durability for less cost and effort than some of the other methods and materials. For example, some will use melted glue stcks on the inside of the armor for strength, while others eschew the pep method...

WIP -Halo for my 3 sons.

That's exactly right. Good eye. You can buy them pretty cheaply from eBay and they fit my 5 & 4 year-old perfectly. As for them growing out of the armor, I don't mind. It's great fun creating the costumes. I started doing this about 3 years ago with kids stormtrooper armor. Last year it...

Here is the pre-glazed, Fiberglassed, primed, and bondoed shoulder bell. I finished this last night. Right next to it you can see the bondoed forearm piece.

I soooo agree with that. I'm compensating for the growth by making it a bit larger than his frame. You can sort of see this in the side picture. Hopefully this should accommodate any growth spurt by Halloween. I figure I can tighten it up as we get closer to Halloween with straps, with any...

WIP -Halo for my 3 sons.

I'm holding the chest and backpack together with industrial strength Velcro. I used black styrene plastic to create slots on the backpack. I then slide in the chest piece and secure the Velcro. It might look like duct tape because half of the styrene is painted silver to match the stripe on the...

WIP -Halo for my 3 sons.

First let me thank all of the members of this forum. I've learned a lot here. I am currently making Halo Armor for my 3 boys. I thought i'd share how far I've come. As you can see below I've definitely made a few short cuts, such as the helmet, but I feel the armor is coming along nicely.
