You should definatly get an exacto knife, it is alot better for the pieces that have tiny edges and difficult cuts. I started out using scissors, but they just couldn't hack it when I moved onto the more difficult pieces.

If you do choose to stick with the file you've already printed out, use cardstock and hot glue instead of tape to connect those pieces together. It'll provide a little more support than tape will and hold those pieces togather nicely
