I think what you are looking for is the legendary hidden technique of vacuu-forming.
You make a pepakura fiberglass shape and use a vacuum to shape a near-molten sheet of plastic around it.
Then you tint the inside of it with nightshade, a candy transparency dark purple automotive spraypaint...

There was a campaign mission after new alexandria where you where supposed to ride on a scarab through the ruins of the city. It was cut from the game.

Would it be very difficult for a mac user to use sketchup unfold tool to make pepakura?
Would it be easier to get a pc-person export a high-def image file of the unfolds or a PDF of the printout?

Also, if you want to use sketchup to unfold things, there is this neat plugin called unfold-tool. Hope that helps.
