I would use something like rhinestones and glue. Once they are painted they look just like rivets.

There is also a PDF file of the Marvel Comics version of Mjolnir out there. It has the writing on the side of the hammer the way it is in the comics as well (with the Marvel "Thor" Font)If that helps at all.
