A History of the Halo Universe - Updated 7/31/11

Several months ago, I started work on a Halo fanfiction novel. I posted some of the work prematurely, but life got in the way and I haven't been able to release any more updates since them. After rewriting the prologue NUMEROUS times, I have finally made some headway and will have a few chapters for you all soon. In the mean time though, I wanted to run a few ideas your way.

One of the first things I noticed when I began to intimately study Halo's universe was that there really was a lot of blank area when it came to the transition from the present day to the time that the Halo games take place. One of my goals in my novel was to accurately, and in a realistic way, capture the spirit and the motivations of the universe of Halo and I didn't believe that I could do that well without knowing their past. So, I began to craft a history that would believably transition the present world into the universe that we love so much.

Today, I release part one of that history for your viewing pleasure and critique. I will release the part two in the coming days. Please let me know what you think and let me know if anything defies cannon. Any criticism, praise, suggestions, or anything else you may have would be greatly appreciated.

A Brief History of the Halo Universe - Part 1

By the first quarter of the 21st century, the established governments of humanity were on the verge of collapse. The United States of America, wracked with hundreds of trillions of dollars of debt, finally collapsed its own economy. After hyper-inflating the value of the dollar, foreign creditors refused to continue to finance its ever increasing debt. Predictably, this severely affected the rest of planet. Across the world, inflation and unemployment skyrocketed. Fueled by the despair of the suffering masses, Communism made a new appearance in Eastern Europe and Asia. After six years of worsening conditions and no sign of recovery, the newly reformed Communist Party won control of the government in the Russian Federation. Four years later, legislation was passed by the Federal Assembly and the Soviet Union was reborn. The Soviets entered into negotiations with Communist China as well as a number of smaller communist countries in Asia and quickly began to take control of Eastern Europe. They were aggressively countered by NATO forces, but unwilling to wage war, the two sides simply stared each other down. The might of the United States, which had been severely crippled from the depression but not destroyed, honored its commitment to its allies in Europe and began to mobilize its forces in an effort to deter its enemies from starting a war. This kept the Russians at bay and the world stood on the brink of World War III as the United States of America, Europe, the New Soviet Union, and China watched each other to see who would make the first move.

In 2046, disaster struck the United States. On the morning of August 21st, twenty seven nuclear missiles were launched into America. Twelve of them were intercepted, but the remaining fifteen detonated 500 kilometers above various American cities. This resulted in a colossal set of Electromagnetic Pulses that left over eighty five percent of the country without power or the use of electronics and most machinery. Unable to import the food and supplies that sustained the country, chaos ensued as hundreds of millions of people starved to death and the survivors fought over the remaining resources. The US military was pulled from Europe to try and deal with the anarchy. Now with the United States effectively out of the war, the Soviet Union invaded Europe as the Chinese invaded America through Alaska. No one ever did find who was responsible for the nuking of America as neither China nor Russia ever did claim responsibility for the act, although extremist cells in China were considered the most likely candidates.

Now standing against the waves of Communist forces pouring into Central Europe and America, NATO and the remainders of the US military in America did their best to stem the tide, but to no avail. There was simply no stopping the aggressors. In an effort to turn the war, the United Nations, in an unprecedented move, drafted the Articles of Union, which would unite Europe under the United Nations, who would act as the governing body of the newly formed “super” nation. This action was opposed by many, but as the Russians moved closer to Germany and then to France, most of Europe signed the document. The United Nations, which kept NATO as its military arm, sent its united forces against the Russians and began to slowly drive back the Communist forces. Whilst this was occurring, the UN also sent soldiers into the United States to take control of the American forces. After eliminating or driving away American resistance fighters who saw the UN forces as an invading army intent on becoming their new masters, the UN then took control of the American armories and their vast nuclear array. The UN added these weapons to their own armories and used them as a bargaining chip to get both the Chinese and the Russians to accept a cease fire. It invited the two powers to the table and peace talks began, but as the three powers were discussing treaties, the UN smuggled several nuclear devices into Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. The devices detonated successfully and as both China and the Soviets instantly looked inward to deal with the unexpected devastation, UN forces blitzkrieged deep into Russian and Chinese territory. Their charge was irresistible and the Soviets and Chinese, unable to deal with both the devastation of their greatest cities and the presence of an invading army, soon surrendered. The UN forces, whose ranks were swelled by a great number of Russian and Asian political dissidents, occupied the enemy countries and dissolved their political institutions. By 2048, the United Nations, which now controlled America, Europe, and most of Asia, had become the greatest superpower the world had ever seen.

With World War III over and the economic situations across the world stabilizing, peace ensued for a time and the world looked to the stars. Mankind had always dreamed of traveling to the stars and the technology required was quickly becoming reality. New space travel and terraforming technology, a means by which to turn an uninhabitable planet into one capable of sustaining life, were developed and by 2080, mankind had begun to colonize Mars and the four moons of Jupiter.

By 2150, overpopulation was plaguing the Earth. To make matters worse, new bouts of economic depression crippled the United Nations. Former Soviet territories witnessed the birth of the Koslovic movement, a Neo Communist group that was spearheaded by Vladimir Koslovic. The Koslovics, who inspired the masses with images of the glorious Soviet Unions of ages past, spread like wild fire across the world and anti-capitalist terrorist cells began to emerge. This created a major backlash amongst many and the Friedan movement was created. The Friedans believed that a stronger government was needed to keep the Koslovic proletariat in check. The United Nations, who had been dealing with major secessionist movements in America, were not willing to appear as if they were going to strip the common man of the little rights that he had. This led the Friedans to take their movement to the Jovian (Jupiter’s) Moons. In 2160, after Koslovic terrorists bombed the World’s Fair in Germany, the Friedans on the Jovian moons declared their independence from the UN and attacked the United Nations Colonial Advisors that had been stationed on the moons. This led to a series of conflicts called the Interplanetary Wars that spread from the Jovian Moon to Earth and then to Mars. The Koslovics, taking advantage of the chaos caused by the Friedans, also rose and took over large tracts of land across Earth. Unable to deal with these two massive uprisings on both Earth and in space, the UN created the United Nations Space Command, the entity that would be its new military backbone. The UNSC quickly adapted to the new theater of war: space. The UNSC Naval Shipyards began to build a fleet of space vessels dedicated for war. Massive recruiting drives filled the ranks of the UNSC and, led by tactically gifted officers, the UNSC waged war against both the Friedans and the Koslovics. After years of fighting, both of the rebel groups were defeated. The UNSC took back the enemy territories and the UN formed the Unified Earth Government, the federal entity that would govern all humanity, both on and off world.
Now that humanity was united under one government, war had ceased, with the exception of pirate raids and lingering terrorist groups. The populations on Earth and the human colonies exploded once again and overpopulation was again becoming a problem. In 2291, a monumental latchkey discovery was made. The distinguished scientists Tobias Shaw and Wallace Fujikawa discovered the concept of Slipspace, a set of dimensions that exist in space that when properly manipulated, allowed faster than light travel. They co-developed the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive, which was capable of allowing ships to enter into these newly discovered dimensions. This revolutionary discover was quickly implemented by the UNSC and by 2310, they had created a line of colony ships that would travel beyond the boundaries of known space to colonize habitable planets. The overcrowded citizens of the Sol system, in search of a new and better life, eagerly joined the colonizing efforts. By the 25th century, the 210 habitable worlds closest to Earth, known as the Inner Colonies, had been colonized and were becoming well established. Outside the confines of those systems, hundreds of other planets were colonized and they came to be known as the Outer Colonies. Although the political and cultural backbone of the UEG was situated in the Inner Colonies, it became absolutely reliant on the resources that the Outer Colonies imported.

A Brief History of the Halo Universe - Part 2

Humanity’s quick expansion across the universe led to prosperity over hundreds of worlds, but it also lead to increasing dissent. Despite the unmatched power of the UNSC, it did not have the numbers to occupy the whole of human expansion. Naturally, colonies far away from Earth, especially those that were self reliant, began to speak of independence. This feeling was further reinforced by the constant intrusive Colonial Administrative Authority, the bureaucracy set in place on every human world to ensure compliance to UEG rule. After years of fruitless negotiations with Earth, who instead of redressing the colonies problems responded by furthering military control of the Outer Colonies, secession from the UEG became a major possibility on a number of human worlds. Initially, the colonists began to protest peacefully but several colonies and eventually entire systems, tired of the politics and the lack of any real results, officially declared independence from the UEG. In 2492, the UNSC, unable to deal with the massive uprising on the planet Far Isle, was given permission to use nuclear weapons to raze the colony. This started a forty three year war that became known as the Insurrection.

With the devastation of the colony of Far Isle, all of humanity turned against the UNSC. Public opinion was very much in favor of the Insurrectionists and many called for the UEG to give them their freedom. The leadership on Earth, unwilling to give up either their power over the Outer Colonies or its massive amount of resources, refused to negotiate. Plans were drawn up to create a secret Special Forces unit capable of eliminating high priority targets amongst the Insurrectionist leadership in an effort to avoid the political damage of another Far Isle incident. Deep within the secret Beta V Division of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), the shadowy intelligence agency of the UNSC, the ORION project, later known as the Spartan-1 project, was born. The best soldiers among the ranks of the UNSC were recruited to receive state of the art biological augmentation and technological advances. This augmentation affected the soldiers’ physical capabilities as well as their cognitive skills. The ORION soldiers were effectively used against the Insurrectionists and carried out a number of successful operations. They were, however, eventually decommissioned as many of the soldiers exhibited severe side effects to the augmentation procedures and a number of others were found to have deep Insurrectionist sympathies. Despite the ultimate failure of the ORION project, it did lead to the Spartan-II project that would yield far better results.

In 2517, the ORION project was reborn as the SPARTAN-II project, under the lead of the brilliant scientist Dr. Catherine Halsey. She surmised that the next generation of “Spartans” would need to be children so that their bodies could handle the physical augmentations and so they could be brainwashed into being the perfect soldiers. By her order, seventy five children, all who were studied extensively and found to have the correct genetic patterns for the planned procedures, were kidnapped and taken to the planet Reach, the military center of operations of the UNSC. Once there, the children, all of which were roughly seven years of age, were put through arduous military training. In 2525, the Spartans were then given their biological augmentations. Amongst the alterations, the children’s skeletons were grafted with metals to make their bones nearly unbreakable, their muscle density was increased, their ocular senses were improved, and their reflexes were significantly heightened. Thirty did not survive the augmentations and twelve were disconfigured to the point that they were transferred to ONI to serve as intelligence officers and tacticians. The remaining thirty three that survived the procedure were put into active duty and quickly became extremely effective in the war against the Insurrectionists.

As the years went by, public support for the Insurrectionists plummeted, especially as innocent civilian lives were lost. Because the rebels were unable to directly stand against the vast armada of the UNSC, they resorted to guerrilla tactics and raided supply convoys and were very fond of using improvised explosive devices in an effort to weaken the UNSC’s hold on the Outer Colonies. Sadly, these explosives very often killed civilians along with their intended targets. In 2513, their support would die entirely. On a cool August morning, a nuclear device was detonated in the Haven Arcology on the planet Mamore, killing two million and injuring another eight and a half million. A group that called themselves the Freedom and Liberation Party claimed responsibility for the horrifying act and demanded that the UNSC leave the Eridanus system. The whole of humanity instantly demanded that the entirety of the Insurrection be put down. The UEG, which had finally received the public support for which it had been waiting, gave the UNSC the authority to put down the Insurrection with whatever means necessary.

The UNSC mobilized and prepared for two years and then launched Operation TREBUTCHET. A vast UNSC armada arrived in the Eridanus system, one of the largest bastions of the Insurrectionists, and waged total war against the rebels. Many of the Insurrectionists perished while a great number scattered to secret bases on different planets and in several asteroid belts. The war continued for ten years and cost over a million lives, but was interrupted suddenly. In 2525, the UNSC lost contact with the planet Harvest, which was situated on the edge of human known space. The scout ship Argo was dispatched to investigate. A transmission from the ship arrived confirming that it had reached Harvest, but contact with it was immediately lost afterwords. Authorities, believing that Insurrectionists had taken the planet, sent a battle group of three ships to deal with the unforeseen problem. As the battle group arrived at Harvest, they were horrified to find that the surface had been turned to ash and glass and the once magnificent human cities had been burned to the ground. In the planet’s atmosphere was a single alien ship that was significantly larger than the three human ships. It immediately opened fire on the humans and quickly destroyed two of the human ships and damaged the third. The third fled back to human space and warned the UNSC of what it had encountered. A fleet of forty human ships was quickly assembled and, led by the war hero Vice Admiral Preston Cole, the fleet headed to Harvest where it met the same alien ship in battle. The alien ship easily defeated a number of the human vessels, but eventually fell after receiving a shocking amount of damage. Thirteen ships in the human fleet fell that day to the one alien ship. This was humanity’s first encounter with the Covenant and it would be the start of the Human-Covenant War.

Initially, very little was known about the Covenant. After time, it was learned that it was a collection of alien species united under the theocracy of the enigmatic San ‘Shyuum, also known as the Prophets. The Covenant was a caste society with a variety of conquered worker species in the lower classes, the reptilian Sanheili and the ape-like Jiralhanae serving as the warrior classes, and the Prophets serving as the Covenant’s leadership role. The Covenant worshipped an extinct alien species known as the Forerunners who had left behind many space installations and artifacts across the universe. Unbeknownst to the humans, many of the planets they had colonized had Forerunner artifacts housed within them. The Prophets stated that the humans had defiled holy sites with their presence and declared total war on humanity. The Covenant then advanced into human space and began a campaign of genocide against all of the humans in their path. The UNSC made contact with its rebelling colonies and promised them aid and support in return their reuniting with Earth. Most of the colonies believed the proclamation to be a hoax, but as the Covenant proceeded into the Outer Colonies, the Insurrectionists quickly threw their support behind Earth. Additionally, because of the severity of the situation, the UNSC was given total control of the whole of the human government and the UEG stood down and provided a support role for the military.

Unable to withstand the Covenant onslaught, the UNSC devised a daring plan to tip the war in humanity’s favor. The Spartans, who were originally assigned to fighting Insurrection forces, were pulled and were given the task to find a way to abduct the Covenant leadership in an effort to force a ceasefire. The Spartans actively fought the Covenant and gained many victories as they gathered information and hunted down the Covenant leaders. As the Outer Colonies burn and the UNSC musters all of its strength to counter the undefeatable foe, their task becomes all the more imperative with each passing day.

Just give it a few days, your story will be 100% accurate ;)

Nice story line for the pre-halo era! It seems that a WW3 will be inevitable if we are to have cool stuff years from now, as in every thing i've ever read about the future has a WW3 in it. I think that this seems pretty accurate, as I have also thought that man will be capable of colonizing Mars in a little over 50 years. Nice job!

I don't want to talk it down, because you really thought about it and it has potential. But a few things caught my eye nevertheless:

 • Using communism may be a bit of a cliché, because communism has already been the bad guy in so many stories.
 • If I'm not mistaken, with soviet forces standing on the eastern door, the one to make a move would still be NATO and the US are still part of that. Obviously that would turn the story into plain old Cold War.
 • Europe is going to move closer together anyway, I'm not sure if such radical measures are necessary, although I see how you're trying to get the UN letters for the UNSC with this. If I were you, I would use NATO as the gunslinging entitiy and the UN as the one who give the mandate to do it, that way "having the power", so to speak.
 • The EU does not have any military power. If you want yours to have it, you need to think of something to make that happen first.
 • I fid it somewhat unrealistic that a half-invaded Europe (Europe has gotten a lot bigger since the cold war!) would have the military power or the numbers to conquer pretty much all the world. Not even a fully intact, economically happy Europe can do that.
 • Some European countries do have nuclear weapons (and I mean their own, not borrowed ones from the US). Certainly not as many as the US have, but definitely enough to blow up a handful of cities like you want to do. This means invading the US to get their arsenal would be a pointless two-front war (I'm sure we all learned in WW2 that those don't work). If you want European forces to conquer the world, it would be more plausible if they used their own nukes for the city-thing, then conquered your new Soviet Union and then invaded the US. Although I don't think European countries even have enough to ships to attack the US like that, this might give you another reason to do it in that order.
 • I am absolutely sure that a 5% blackout, even in major areas, wouldn't lead to the immediate collapse of the USA and certainly not of their military forces. But you are there, you probably know that better than me :)

Wonderful analysis, Ventrue! You bring up a lot of great points, some of which I have and some of which I have not thought of. When I have a little time tonight, I will address the stuff that you have brought up. Thank you!

Don't anybody feel badly about critiquing this. I am showing it to you because I want to know what you think. I promise you that I can take a little criticism. ;)

I have used that source extensively while creating this timeline. As I said, I want to get this as lore accurate as I can and still make the believable and realistic transition from the present to the future.

More to come soon!

The problem is, the Halo Timeline would list something as serious as a nuclear war (which is what your stint there amounts to) or a World War III. It doesn't. We can safely assume no large wars are canon. It would make more sense that economic depression and boom, and various small wars among nationalist groups would be the state of the Halo universe, between 2011 and the first listed date, 2021. Moreover, between 2011 and 2079. This also sets the stage for the Friedens and the Koslovics, more realistically and more straightaway than the events of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. (Which is basically what your writing looks like.)

Look, I'd like to hear some unique perspective on the untouched parts of the Halo timeline, but I can't call it perspective, if it makes no sense within it. Besides, wars aren't fought country-to-country or even union-to-union anymore. They're fought country-to-idealist group. And that's how the major wars in the Halo timeline are fought. The Jovian Moons Campaign, the Rainforest Wars, the Mars Campaign. They're all fought UN (or similar) against a non-national belligerent. Touch on this tendency, and build it from its roots in today's warfare, and you'll have something really good. But, keep copying the transition from MW2 to MW3 and I'm going to facehoof.

I apologize for the delay in the second update, everyone. I am now in the process of preparing for college, starting a new business, and moving into my own apartment, so things are a bit hectic right now. I have finished Part Two of the history and have also edited several parts of Part One. I would like to thank Ventrue and Schitz for their critique of Part one and I would like to share my thoughts on what they had to say. As always, feel free to compliment, complain, critique, whatever.

[*]Using communism may be a bit of a cliché, because communism has already been the bad guy in so many stories.

As I was beginning to think of this story, I thought the same thing. Sadly though, it is an all too possible reality. Go to the average American college and find half the numnut student population believes that Communism was a good thing enacted by bad people. It is also making resurgences in South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe. The Communist Party of the Russian Federation is the second largest political party in Russia. It is not a huge leap of faith to say that Communism could once again become a major enemy to the free world.

[*]If I'm not mistaken, with soviet forces standing on the eastern door, the one to make a move would still be NATO and the US are still part of that. Obviously that would turn the story into plain old Cold War.

I could have kicked myself when I read this. I must have been about to fall asleep or something when I was writing because I did know that NATO was the alliance that bore military power while the EU dealt with economics. Thank you for pointing out that rather embarrassing mistake.

[*]I fid it somewhat unrealistic that a half-invaded Europe (Europe has gotten a lot bigger since the cold war!) would have the military power or the numbers to conquer pretty much all the world. Not even a fully intact, economically happy Europe can do that.
You are absolutely correct on that note. While Europe does bear the numbers to occupy large tracts of land if it needs to, Russia and Asia are just far too big for a war torn populace to control. I tried to fix that fact as best as I could.

[*]Some European countries do have nuclear weapons (and I mean their own, not borrowed ones from the US). Certainly not as many as the US have, but definitely enough to blow up a handful of cities like you want to do. I should have been clearer when I said that they invaded America. I meant to say that they moved in the area and only encountered pockets of resistance while the rest welcomed them with open arms. Such forces would most likely be hailed as saviors among a population that is so in need, but there would be some who would resist a takeover of that sort. I also understand that some European countries have nuclear weapons, but the US does keep a far greater stockpile that are much more advanced than the rest of the world’s. I don’t know. I may rethink that one.

[*]I am absolutely sure that a 5% blackout, even in major areas, wouldn't lead to the immediate collapse of the USA and certainly not of their military forces. But you are there, you probably know that better than me :)
95%, not 5%. I actually changed this to 85% to account for pockets, but nonetheless, the point is the same. In 2009, a book was written called One Second After. The premise of the book is that the US is hit by three electromagnetic pulses, which occur whenever a nuclear weapon is detonated in the atmosphere. The book was presented to a Congressional Oversight Committee on the subject as a warning of the implications of such an attack. It is so easy to manufacture and so likely that experts in the field say that it is not a question of if we are attacked in such a fashion, but when. I suggest that everyone read that book. It will seriously open your eyes and have you thinking in a different light.

I disagree that it is “safe” to say anything as we can not read 343’s minds. Great nations do not just vanish into thin air and depressions certainly don’t cause it. They can cripple nations, but they do not redraw political boundaries. There has to be a reason that the US fell and there has to be a reason that a one world government came into power and it ain’t the value of the dollar that caused it. And as Call of Duty goes, they hardly invented the concept of WWIII and the rebirth of the Soviet Union. They just put it to a fast paced shooter and made it popular among teenagers who do not read or watch anything that has more substance than the Hangover.

To be brutally honest, that is not a true statement. Was not the war in Afghanistan a war between two countries? Iraq? Did we not depose both countries’ governments before we began to hunt down terrorist groups? Yes, technically we took down ideological (religious) groups in order to do so, but how is that any different than the Nazis? They were an ideological (political) group. The Communists in Russia, Korea, and Vietnam and the Fascists in Italy were all ideological groups. The only difference now is how we react to our enemies. Seventy years ago, we would have invaded Pakistan and leveled it to the ground for harboring Osama. Now, all they have to do is deny all knowledge of his existence and we will not touch them. Our enemies, who could never have stood against our might, have learned to hide behind civilians and countries who are too cowardly to go to war with us.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright, everyone. I hope you enjoy the story and let me know what you think!

I could have kicked myself when I read this. I must have been about to fall asleep or something when I was writing because I did know that NATO was the alliance that bore military power while the EU dealt with economics. Thank you for pointing out that rather embarrassing mistake.

But NATO isn't a European thing. You can't say "NATO and the Americans go to war", because NATO already includes the USA. The "European military" you are looking for simply doesn't exist (at least not yet).

I also understand that some European countries have nuclear weapons, but the US does keep a far greater stockpile that are much more advanced than the rest of the world’s.
I thought they were mostly left over from the Cold War, how can they be more advanced? :)

95%, not 5%.
Oops. Read that wrong, sorry.
I'll also take the whole point back, because I just yesterday read on the news that Berlin couldn't survive without electrical power for more than one or two days, after that it would sink into total chaos. The article said (however hard to believe that is) that you can't even get fuel out of a gas station to power a generator without having power in the first place.

Then why are you saying it's safe to assume World War III did take place?

I rest my case. Good day, gentlemen.
I never said that it was safe to assume WWIII took place. I am only trying to realistically fill a period of time that Bungie and 343 left unfilled.

Seriously, dude. Chill out. I don't want this thread to turn into another fight over a universe that doesn't even exist. This is for people's enjoyment, nothing more.
