A question for a newbie regarding foam and cardstock

Can I use foam AND cardstock to make the armor? Could I make the outside cardstock and the inner layer out of foam as to give it some bulk?

Also, once I trace and cut out my foam pieces, how exactly do I glue them together? From what I understand, I'm supposed to cut out a small section on the connecting side of a piece which is about half of the total depth of the piece, and do the inverse on the corresponding piece. After this I glue the two half cuts together to make a piece with full thickness. Am I completely off base with this?

Next, it seems a little pointless to do cardstock and foam together, especially if your going to be hiding the foam under the cardstock. Both methods are different, but if your worried about it not being bulky enough I'd just do the foam.
