Best supplies for a noob

Hey guys i just found this place and i think its really awesome, Im going to go run some errands and i would like to pick up some supplies for creating some various things off of this forum. I had a few question of what is the best stuff to use as a noob...

For weapons and armor
What material should i use for the paper craft like stuff, i was thinking foam core or some cardboard.

Also What stuff would i use to smooth it out and harden it, i have seen a couple things, saying that fiberglass cloth and plaster like stuff is good, also where would i purchase this? (any local retailers would be good, like lowes or home depot)

I believe you can get most of the supplies (except for the undersuit stuff) at most hardware stores.
Some stuff is also at craft stores like Pat Catans or Michaels.
110 lb cardstock you can get from walmart.
