Well I'll be heading to basic training for the USAF in a couple of months and after that I'll be in tech training in Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Tx and I plan to get a sports bike for on-base travel. What I would like to do is build or if someone is willing to put in the time, buy a Mark VI helmet built around a motorcycle helmet. I saw the tut for making the visor and its doable but I currently dont have the access to the tools to cut the visor.

If I were to make my own, what type of material would best make it out of?

Just like a smart bike rider im going to get the full kit and get the coat pants and boots, which makes me think...
I should build a whole suit around the bikes actual armor. armor on armor, lol.

Anyone try this yet?

Right now, Id just like to get the helmet project off the group and try that, I'll just get olive colored gear to go with the helmet once its finished.

Now I dont plan to have this as a primary helmet and gear, just for kicks and looks, lol.

Well what do you all think?

might be, but i think it'd be doable. is it possible to fit a pepakura helmet around the bike helmet? it'd be tougher than crap to strengthen the inside but the outside you could do at least...

When i was bulding my new mark6 helmet ou could actually add the suncap to the top and it looked cool, otherwise it's a bad idea because motorcycle helmet's are already HUGE and making them even bigger would make them GIGANTIC!

This is a really bad idea for a few reasons. If you crash your insurance probably wont pay out, because you modified your helmet. Seriously man riding bikes is a risky enough business without limiting your peripheral vision with plastic helmet attachments, just get a green helmet with a gold visor.

points taken and good ones, thanks all.

but i still think it would be cool to see a spartan riding down the street on a gxr 600 or something

is it not possible for any of us on this site to make a bucket that meets the specs of whatever it is that motorcycle helmets are made by so that if one were to crash whilst wearing one, not only would it protect their noggin and still have your insurance pay you, but you'd look awesome while doing it.

It wouldnt be your scale, I have a motorcycle helmet and it is nearly twice the size of my head, building a MC helmet around that would mean the helmet would be even larger than the motorcycle helmet and it would be very awkward looking to wear.

Absolutely, If you want to make about 10 of them and submit them for testing, they have to meet or exceed whatever safety requirements are set in your community. Im not sure if its true now but, I know there were some states in america where you dont even have to wear a helmet at all. crazy americans.

Oh yeah, since MC's helmet isnt the same shape as a DOT approved helmet, there will be gaps between MC and the motor helmet, those gaps when you fall, could cause serious damage to your head. Motorcycle helmets are built SOLID so when you get hit, nothing is displaced.

i once had a similar idea, but my plan was to take one of those legendary helmets and cut the pieces i need of of it and add them to the helmet. it would take some work, and may not be 100% accurate, but it would look like the master chief, and would still be fairly tough...

You could take a bike helmet to an airbrush artist, and get him to paint the mk VI details onto it. Could look pretty cool with a gold visor.
