Buying Armor?

Sup guys, I joined a few months ago but like the noob that I was (and still am) I never really introduced myself. My names Matthew and like most people here, I want to make some armor. I'm into most things that people enjoy here; video games, movies, sports, etc... Currently a friend and I are working on a YouTube series called The Future of Gaming. As of right now we don't know how it will turn out or if we can even do it (we're not sure if we're allowed to make a "show" about video game characters). Anyways, the show's about video game characters we know and love today, two of the main characters are Marcus Fenix (Gears of War) and Master Chief (Who doesn't know about Halo?). FoG is centered around these two characters who in the future aren't as popular as they are today. Marcus and John find themselves living normal, everyday lives and struggle without the spotlight. The show's sole purpose is comedic and is meant to make you laugh.

Unfortunately my friend Nathan and I failed miserably when it came to making Chief's armor. We thought being a little more artistic than the average bear might aid us in making this armor, but apparently everyone on this site is a descendant of Hephaestus. I saw the introduction video and was informed that the 405th site doesn't sell armor, but if I'm correct, individual users can/will. If this is true, I'd like to know how I'd go about buying armor from somebody. Thanks for the help in advance.

First, welcome. I like the sound of the show you're thinking about making. There should be no legal issues so long as you put a disclaimer stating who own rights to what property and that you are doing the show for non-profit.

As far as armor purchase, yeah, you're probably not going to get a huge influx of volunteers to sell stuff. However, check out the classified forum. There is all kinds of stuff up for sale/trade there (Cereal Killl3r is even selling casts of his amazing Mk VI helmet). Other than that, there are commercially available costumes, though the quality is a bit sub-par.

Which ever direction you choose, good luck!

Glad you like the idea. I feel like it could be one of those things where you personally love it but everyone isn't too fond of it. I'll be sure to add disclaimers if we can actually go through with the idea though. As for obtaining the armor, hopefully I can find some volunteers to help us out, I'll look around, thanks for the help.

If anyone else reads this and might be interested in selling some armor, feel free to message me.

I could be wrong/blind, but I don't think we get access to the classifieds until we hit Infantryman. At least, I haven't seen any classifieds.

Oh, sorry, I forgot that those without the infantryman status can't even look at the classified section. Hmm...

Well, there's always ebay, but be VERY careful when purchasing any halo armor from people there. I have seen a lot of scammers and recasters (recasters are considered kind of scum around here, they take other people's hard work, make copies and sell them, it's disgusting).

Again, sorry about my lapse in memory about the classifieds.

So basically I'm screwed then? Is there a place here on the forums that tells you how to get to infantryman?
It's a combination of posts and time registered. So... You'll be here a while. I'm not sure why they made it so newb's can't even see the classifieds. It makes sense that they shouldn't be able to sell things (start new threads) but no sense to not be able to buy things.

If I recall correctly it's obtained automatically somewhere along the 100-posts mark (note that I still don't have it). And be warned, buying/selling armor is a somewhat touchy subject, and not devoid of scammers - we'd much rather see people make their own (this is, after all, a very fun hobby and the main purpose of this webiste).

I think I've seen somewhere that it is based on post count AND length of time registered. I think you're 'not infantryman' status is because you haven't been registered for a month. Not 100% sure on that one though, just a hunch.

I am going to chime in...

Infantryman isn't just something you spam 100 posts and get, it's meant to be a buffer period to help weed out bad eggs, and also remind people of the site's focus. This is an armor MAKING site, not an armor BUYING site, and my understanding is that infantryman was introduced to fight off the slew of people who would create an account and just start spamming begging for other people to sell them stuff. This is dangerous not only because it's annoying as sin to see the noob forum filled with WTB threads, but it's also a protection. Someone could create an account, and start selling right away, and there was no way to tell who it was. But if they were made to sit here for three months and actually participate in the community, you get to know them better, and scammers are less likely to put forth that much time and effort for a one time scam (since you will be caught and banned once found out).

You had a bad first run at a helmet, we all do. The key is to not give up, tell us what went wrong, and then we help you do better next time. Realistically, if you have the effort to put forth, you'll make your helmets long before you reach infantryman.

It should also be noted that asking for people to bypass the classifieds system is a no-no according to the rule book:

I'll be honest, we didn't even try to make a helmet first, I read somewhere it was easier to start with something smaller like a forearm because scaling can be an issue. If Helmets are easier (in this case MK VI or the Halo 4 Helmet) I wouldn't mind having another go at it.

You should try making the armor out of foam if the pep method isn't working for you, this way you can avoid the Bondo process, if you plan to purchase a full set of armor be prepared to spend some cash because usually decent armor is going to get in the $1000 plus range

I have a very small understanding as to what I have to do using Pepakura, I have no idea what to do with foam though... And does foam even look as good as the Pepakura armor? I'm not trying to be spoiled or anything, I just wan't some armor that will keep people interested in my series. If it's not up to people's standards (Youtube viewers usually have high expectations when it comes to HD and stuff) then I feel like they might not come back for a second, third, or fourth episode...

Just joined officially about an hour ago. My name is Brian, and I joined to get some tips from the pros. I am planning on using a styrofoam and EVA foam design for all my projects. Problem is, I have no clue where to begin. If anyone knows what kind of tools I would need, or a good place to find reference sheets, please send me a PM. Thanks.

Yeah, I went to that site, and I realized something. It was the same website I read through aday before I met one of your 405th members. Thanks for the help, and I DO appreciate it, I was just looking for a more personal resource.
