Good afternoon, 405th Community.

Over the past few months, our team has been working diligently to make improvements to our Discord environment in order to enhance user experience, streamline channel organization, and maintain the interactive community atmosphere that you all enjoy. I want to extend a special thank you to NobleofDeath16 and JTF4 for spearheading this project. They have worked tirelessly to communicate with members, test new features, and implement tools to ensure the safety of our community.

I am pleased to announce that the first "Discord Refresh" will take place from 6/10/2024 to 6/11/2024. This update will be conducted in the evening to minimize disruption as much as possible, although some users may experience temporary crashes as changes are being made. Rest assured, our team will be working diligently to implement these changes swiftly.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to enhance your Discord experience.

JTF4 has compiled a detailed summary of the upcoming changes, which will be provided verbatim:

“First, I’d like to go over channel changes.

In the current server, we have 20 off-topic channels, 11 secondary gaming channels, and 22 ask-an-expert channels. This can be a daunting number for any user to go through and find things they want to participate in.

Starting with off-topic, we’ve pared things down to 9 channels. To do this, we’ve combined similar channels and removed a few that our server statistics show were rarely used. We’ve also combined our secondary gaming channels here, eliminating the need for the extra 11 gaming channels.

Next, for the ask-an-expert section. We’ve renamed it to “Quick Help” because, at its core, that’s what this section is: an area for members to get quick help with what they are working on. In Quick Help, we’ve pared down to 8 channels.

A quick update for the buy-and-sell area: we’ve renamed it to Marketplace and combined both the want-to-buy and want-to-sell channels into a single forum channel.

Second, voice channels.

In this update, we’re setting up a system that allows channels to be dynamically created and scaled to match real-time user needs. When a user joins a hub channel, a new voice channel will be created and the member is automatically moved. After it’s created, the original creator can rename the channel’s status to reflect its purpose. We’ve also added a regiment meeting hub and a staff meeting hub.

Third, ticketing.

Instead of having a welcome channel that all users can see, new users will now be able to click a button in the welcome area that prompts them to enter their forum profile link, creating a new ticket for that user. This will provide us with a 1:1 environment to handle join requests. We’ve also added a ticketing system for support requests. If users have reports, requests, or other issues, they can create a ticket that allows staff to have a 1:1 dialogue with them within the 405th environment.

Fourth, moderators.

We’re introducing a new role to the Discord server for moderators. Moderators are trusted members who have volunteered to assist in watching over the server andstep in to help enforce our rules and guidelines when needed.

Here are the new channel lists:

Let us know if you have any questions regarding the upcoming changes and note that not all of these adjustments are set in stone. As we grow and evolve like any community we can and will identify new needs to address for the betterment of the larger community. If there are official requests for changes, we kindly ask that they be shared either directly on the forum or with the DPR (NobleofDeath16 ) for review by our teams to determine how best to implement them.

*EDIT* The "MemeTeam" channel was inadvertently left off the list I was sent, it has been added to this post.

My two cents: Keep Selling and buying seperate as to keep the topics organized. Its a lot easier to go to one spot for buying/selling than scrolling through the mess that will happen
So what will happen once this is live, is all postings are required to be tagged as buy or as sell. Up in the top of the marketplace, will be an option to filter out those tags; ultimately achieving what you are recommending. Each section with able to be visible on their own at all times. The change is ultimately to guide the purpose of that chat to buying and selling, and guide conversation to open marketplace items accordingly as right now a lot of what has been observed, is someone will post, days of conversation will happen, and the item will never see the light of day again.

I like the idea of a ticket system. I've used one before in another server and it's a nice way to get help. Since new people may not know who is staff, who isn't, who's on and etc...

As for the voice chat changes... I've got mixed feelings here. One one hand, the current channels seem to work pretty well as is. Like people who jump in general but start gaming will often move to a gaming channel already. And having to essentially create your own voice channel each time feels like a bit of an annoying extra step.
But at the same time I guess it could be useful if like you want to spawn a secondary channel to chat about some specific thing while others keep talking in a main chat. (But I do kind of feel that this is something that would be not overly frequently used.)

But I can't say I'm overly happy with the removal of some of the channels. Like both the meme-team and oni-vans channels are going away? I would like to have at least one meme channel.

It's alright. I'll just... hold onto the memes I wanted to share with my friends in the 405th.. since there is no longer somewhere to put them. Who needs to have funny pictures to look at when you have uh * checks list * another level of staff?

At least they arent asking for us to file TPS reports and put in mandatory overtime

This is exactly the kind of feedback we need. I did not realize BOTH meme channels were gone and we did not slate to have one back in. I apologize for that error on my end. I think its good to have one and ill make sure its added back in. That error is entirely on me.

In terms of the voice channels, what's nice is there's no actual action required for making a channel. You jump in, and the tools do it for you. Its a change that is meant to reduce how much "Noise" is on the main splash of the discord while not taking any functionality away. This will also allow for private channels to be created as you said, when folks wanna have a separate discussion for lets say, too many people in one channel and they cant hear the other person they are directing their conversation to. they can lock their channel and stop people from flooding into it and can have that conversation or do that thing they want to undisturbed.

EDIT: I did double check my testing build and memeteam still existed in it as well. so I can chalk this up as a documentation error. It was ALWAYS intended to come back as a channel.

does it say memes somewhere and I'm just blind :( ?

Ah, I'm glad it was just a documentation error. Easy enough to happen. I'm glad you checked though and that was all it ended up being.

Dragern The memes will be there, NobleofDeath16 just forgot to put them in the documentation.

  • Noticed that #vent-zone is not in the newer list, which I'd recommend keeping given its high activity and the fact that it helps redirect sensitive topics away from places like #general and #off-topic.
  • Speaking of zones, what's #rainbow-zone supposed to be? Is it like the successor of #inclusion-station or something else entirely? If it's the same thing, I'd say to just keep the old name since it still serves the same purpose.
  • I'd think #Halo-gaming and #Other-gaming ought to be kept under the same area just for ease of access. Given how popular stuff like Lethal Company and Helldivers are as far as game night options go, it doesn't make sense to me to keep them under separate categories.
  • The new voice system seems needlessly complicated. I see no reason to deviate from the current setup outside of user limits, which even then can be increased depending on the occasion.
A couple thoughts from someone who's terminally on the Discord.

Following up on the off-topic type channels disappearing:

One thing I've reminded myself is that a lot of these channels that are getting removed were created before Discord had the threads feature. I don't think it would be out of the question to create threads for some of these items we've had channels for in the appropriate channel if people still want a dedicated space to talk about them. They just won't have a root level, dedicated channel anymore.

- The voice system will make a whole lot more sense seeing it in action. If it feels encumbersome in use we can tweak it. But I firmly believe actually seeing it in use and trying it will clear up a lot of concerns.

- rainbow zone is specifically a space created that is home to those of the LGBTQIA+ community to talk amongst each other and show ally-ship. It has existed alongside inclusion station. Inclusion will not be returning in any form as we are attempting to reduce any instances of mass pinging in channels outside the use of reaction roles.

- The game night channels will remain separate as our communities core focus is Halo to discuss and play the core titles, and a space for other games to exists for folks who want to host other games and discuss them. We will be exploring creating reaction roles for both to signal those particular game nights in those space as well.

This is absolutely correct. With this change we are keeping the use of threads in mind as it’ll allow for organized topics down the line that may only be relevant for X amount of time.

Appreciate the clarification, Noble. Rainbow Zone and game night roles sound like really good additions to the server, so I'm looking forward to those. Still a bit iffy on the voice system, but I'll take your word for it and wait to see how it turns out in reality. Would still appreciate your thoughts on #vent-zone, but other than that I'm good with everything that's been proposed.
