Exact Dangers Of Polyurethane? (That's In Fiberglass Resin)

Ok, at my school there is this engineering club thing... One day walking by waiting for tennis practice i see them working with (to my utter amazement) fiberglass. Needless to say, the entire first floor A wing smelled like crap. Looking inside, i saw: GASP! none of them (NOT A SINGLE ONE) were wearing any kind of respiratory or eye protection! later that day, I talked to my friend who also said that they should, but the rest of the club ignored him. Looking around the forums, I can also see people using dust masks as respirators. Personally, I use a good respirator, but I've always wondered about the dangers of fiberglass. Anyone know?

EDIT: This was in a Closed barely ventilated Tech./woodworking Room and they were using enough Fiberglass to cover an entire Go-cart (their project).

Toxic vapors when mixing and applying the resin, and fiberglass particles when sanding. You need a respirator rated for protection against organic vapors when applying fiberglass resin, and a high-quality dust mask wen sanding. Talk to the principal or administration about it, and make sure to mention that a lawsuit can be filed because it endangers the club members and anyone that the vapors can reach.

Who the hell let them do that in the first place? What were they using it for? Was it in a ventilated room, or something like a hall?

I know the fumes kill brain-cells. I'm not sure about this, but I think some resin particles can get in your lungs and the resin cures and freezes up your oxygen balloon thingies in your lungs. Then you die.

The inside of the lung is similar to a sponge, so there is a lot of surface area for diffusion (or exchange across cellular walls) of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide to take place. the less surface area, the less you are able to breath properly... and the less brain cells you have.

dying's a biggie. but ihalation of the particles from sanding fiberglass will KILL YOUR LUNGS(epic voice), and breathing the resin fumes kills brain cells(brain cell dont divide after theyre destroyed, so once theyre gone, theyre gone. plus no-one wants to get stupid do they?) this isnt with resin, but the fiberglass dust from sanding could get in your eyes and i could only imagine the damage that would do( as in alot)

edit: i dont really want to sound like a debbie downer, BUT id send an email/call/talk to the supervisor about things such as the dangers of resin, fiberglass and ignorance-but thats just me

what kind of supervisor approved the use of resin without respirators in a room with no ventilation?

I'm pretty sure constant exposure will eventually lead to lung cancer years down the road.

ok dangers of resin

1. toxic particles like everyone else has said

2. splash burning

3. ignorance

dangers of fiberglass and fg dust

1. it IS glass

2. though u dont feel it, its incredibly sharp, thats why it itches. it cuts the skin, gets inside and stays until found and removed

3. dust is EXACTLY the same, incredibly sharp.

4. it gets in ur eyes, YOUR BLIND. no if and or buts(unless your incredibly lucky)

5. you breath it in and it WILL SHRED your lungs, seriously it can cause internal bleeding, and that is NOT fixable after it happens

6. both dust and full pieces are really hard to get out of clothes and all it will take is one swipe across the eyes mouth, nose, or skin and ANY of the above can happen

all these reasons is why i dont use it anymore.

i was careful the first time i used it and i really dont know if i did any damage to myself without knowing it. if i were you i would TELL an ap or the head principle to investigate why these kids arnt following safety precautions, and suggest a check up with a eye specialist, a breathing specialist, and just a regular check up with their doctor. if the principle doesnt comply (if they dont theres a problem in its self) call the superintendants office and demand a change of conduct of this club. im not normally this foward but this is serious if they are doing what you say they are. to those of you who are watching this topic to decide what material to use, im not downing this method im just warning you of how dangerous this can be if not treated more than correctly.

how long has this been going on?

Ever wonder what you might be inhaling without a respirator see the image below. A month or two ago I has to go to hospital because I was having trouble breathing when I leaned over or crouched foound out that part of it was due to the fact that for a few years I used fiberglass resin and cloth without any protection and in the process damaged one of my lungs from not following instructions. I figured it does'nt smell that bad and I could'nt see the particles floating in the air so I worked without protection for a while but now I do and you know why.

Talk to a teacher. Teachers should have to listen to you if it's concerning safety. The teacher could also force the club to wear respirators and other protective gear.

This came from the MSDS from Bondo/3M and is going to be a bit long-winded, but it specifically answers what the dangers are:
