Hey-o. Decided I wanted to try my hand at prop building, and I'm enjoying the challenge so far. I literally have zero experience before starting this build. The end game is for my brother and I to have two completed ODST suits. We will be making everything but the helmets out of EVA foam. We're only in the very early stages of that (working on templates). But I figured I would go ahead and start a thread so that I might be able to gather advice from everyone.

On this third picture, I tried to get these as close as I could without severely warping and or tearing the model. How much of a problem do you think this will be in the future?

Advice greatly appreciated. Will keep you updated, but I'll be juggling end of senior year exams and admissions time along with this project, so development will be sporadic.

Edit: This should not be a problem later on. I would back the gap with a tab of cardstock to fill it in though.

I'm using Scotch Super Glue. And yeah I saw. I started to explain the reason behind some of the number not matching up having to do with pep designer labeling the edges differently when I have to reprint specific pages due to mistakes. D:

Something I have found that seems to work well for the building, is to remove the tabs of pieces that are too close together. 403, 407, 677, 674, for instance, would look a great deal better if you remove the tabs from them. You wouldn't have to cut the tabs off and they would look a great deal smoother. Since the little gap is supposed to be solid when built, it will be close enough together for the resin to seal the hole.

nothing wrong with slow updates. :) i know builds on here that go for years before finished. Mine did lol. anyways, everything is looking good so far so keep up the good work.
Good luck on exams too

Just a quick update on what I've had time to do lately. Not too much, but eh. Thanks for the advice/encouragement. Also I don't have a cutting board, or any kind of work shop at all so I'm doing cutting on top of old magazines.

For all my pep work, I use extremely sharp scissors rather than knives because like you, I don't have a cutting board. Its gets the job done with little mess. I could agree with the arguments though, where it takes a little longer to pep with scissors rather than knives. Looking good nevertheless.

Would you recommend an ODST helmet as a first build?

I'm planning on doing exactly as you: foam armor but pep helmet.

I don't have a work shop either, but I picked up a cheap cutting board for a couple bucks and it's worth it. Everyone has their own method, but I only use an exactoblade. To each their own but I would recommend a cutting board, they're cheap, thin, and last for a long while. But stick with what works for you

Would I? This is my first build as well. Before I started on the actual helmet, I spent about a month reading bookmarking guides, tutorials, sites, videos, and basically anything that would help. To get a feel for folding/gluing I did a smaller project first, and just put together a small, not scaled shoulder piece ( http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/24557-All-Odst-Pep-Files ). And even still I didn't feel as prepared as I could with that going in, but you get progressively better and piecing it all together as it goes. So what I'm saying is that I'm sure if you're prepared enough and willing enough, it should be a fun and challenging first build, and to give it a shot. Its all about learning and trial and error.

One more exam on monday, then I have to wrap up my foreign language requirement. After that, I should be dishing out progress updates every other day.

Hey o so exams are done. Made a good deal of progress i'd say.

keep in mind, I've still got a good bit of flaps to glue down on the visor, but I havn't posted anything in a while and was proud of somewhat placing it to fit that gap that i wanted to post it.
