Here are a few FREE 3d modeling tools for those wanting to learn to model in 3d.

This content is an excerpt from: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-3d-modelling-applications-you-should-not-miss/

Blender - A free and open source 3D modeling and animation application which can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications.

K-3D - It features a plugin-oriented procedural engine for all of its content, making K-3D a very versatile and powerful package.
K-3D excels at polygonal modeling, and includes basic tools for NURBS, patches, curves and animation.

Art of Illusion - Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. Some of the highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials.

Anim8or - Anim8or is a 3D modeling and character animation program which allows users to create and modify 3D models with built-in primitives such as spheres, cylinders, platonic solids, etc.; mesh-edit and subdivision; splines, extrusion, lathing, modifiers, bevel and warps.

Not all 3d modeling software have all the same tools, so use the application's help and tutorial tools to find your way around. Youtube is a great source of video tutorials for almost all 3d modeling applications.

Well it seems only to do the job for weapons :/

Not a good medium for organic modeling and armor isn't it?
Sorry to diss sketchup but i totally don't like it and its interface. Its good enough for room decoraters but thats just it in my opinion :/

I'm gonna throw my opinion in here as someone who works with 3D programs (usually of the paid variety) every day at work. I'll second Rundown's assessment of Sketchup being not all that great.

Of those options, if you can learn Blender, do so. It is easily the most powerful of the free programs, in my opinion. I have a friend who builds professional game assets almost entirely in Blender. Not to mention it's basic poly tools are killer for building things for pep.

AMEN! It is a nice program for weapons, but a killer when trying to edit the mesh, it's so weird how it formats.

I agree, espeacially with the whole sketchup thing. But, you can't forget about Metasequoia. Thats what I use. Some versions are shareware but 40 bucks just for some more export options? I think not. If you need .obj just open it in pep and export it. XD
