Well, this helmet has given me a pretty hard time, but it's nearing it's completion.

Looks good. It's nice and symmetrical (which is the biggest deal IMO). I'll be watching this thread (so work fast :p).

Zomg... It's Reconz...

It's so perfect and symmetrical... I'm jealous... ;)

I'm might have to do that same... :p

It's far from done, I still have a lot of sanding and detailing left to do, but for starting on it this morning, I'm happy.

I have never used Bonod before, so I'm really interested to find out what you think.

yeah bondo is a b*tch, right? someone who shares the pain :p

you want to apply bondo very liberally, its very hard to work with at first, and you dont have much work time, no matter how cold you mix it.

tell me how you deal with those problems, i need to get my workshop back open soon too, and we could help each other.

BTW, isnt the scent worse than the resin? one good waft of that got burnt into my nostrils for a week :cautious: wear a respirator kiddos.

o hai recon can i has yar reconz? it looks like its coming along very nice did u scale the pep or leave it at its prescaled? and how does it fit ur head? since its been crap weather here no fiberglassing for me so ive been cutting out a recon to put together but i didnt scale it so im hoping it fits

You get used to it.

kinda.

The real reason you wanna wear a respirator, aside from the fumes, is that if you look at bondo dust under a microscope, it looks like little tiny shards of glass. It tears up your insides ( lungs, throat, etc) like you wouldn't believe.
Coughing up blood isn't as cool as the movies make it out to be...

Gamerguy, looks good so far. If you're sanding and you break through the paper, dig it out, deeper than you think... The paper never really holds the bondo well, and it will drive you nuts every time you sand over a papery spot, and the bondo flakes out (trust me on this one).

Once you start getting into the details and hard edges, grab a wood chisel, preferably one that's an inch wide or less. The bondo carves surprisingly easily, and its a hell of a lot easier than trying to sand it. Your fingers will thank you.
The ones I use I picked up at harbor freight, i think, for less than 10 bucks...

here's an amazon link... the price is a little bit less than what I paid for them. damn.

I've been having some problems with the paper, it's like I'm sanding too much, the edges start to split, then I have to put more resin on them so they don't come completely apart.

I think I might be wasting Bondo, too. How much should I be using? Every time I put Bondo on it, I end up sanding it off, in hope of getting it smoother... then I add more, and do it all again. Is there something that I'm doing wrong, or is it supposed to be like this? I've been using a dremal and one of these to sand with.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I have one of those chisels.

"illusinating"? lols. Me thinks you are hallucinating. :p

Thanks everyone, I couldn't do it without you. :D

As for an update: I added more Bondo, and some resin, to the helmet, the edges keep falling apart, so I had to add more resin, before I sanded. :| The rest of the armor now has 3 layers of resin, on the outside.

Tomorrow, I will put the first layer of cloth in the chest piece, then cut it apart and flip the other pieces over and finish resin-ing. Hopefully I'll get some more work done on the helmet, too.

I'm working on the chest right now, I can't decide where I should cut it. O.O I need your help!

I had originally planned on cutting it the way it is on the right, but after I looked at some other armor, I realized that most people did it the way one the left.

Which way should I cut it? Is there any real difference?
