Halo Wars Newbie!

Hey guys!

While feeling a bit nostalgic about Halo this week, I completed my 20-something run through Halo Reach (happy b-day to it, it turned 11 this week). It once again gave me feels, but I wanted a new Halo experience. A new story, or something I haven't experienced before.

That's when I remembered that out of all the media that I have/seen (games, shows, books, comics) , that there were two games I've never played! Halo Wars 1 and 2.
So I've bought the first one for now, and I gotta say I'm not too bad. I should mention that I've never played an RTS game before, so not only is it a new game for me, but an entirely game genre that I've never experienced before.

Any RTS tips? Or anything you like/dislike about 1 or 2? Or any other RTS you would recommend?

Are you looking for tips for multiplayer, PvE or campaign? They all rely on similar things but obviously operate differently. Knowing your commanders strengths and using them well in matchups will definitely get you far early on!

I'm focusing mainly on the campaign right now. My main concern are the match ups for countering enemy units. For example, Hunters keep wrecking my vehicles, but are somehow being taken out easily by my infantry? Any other Halo game would be the opposite.

Halo Wars 1 has a rock paper scissors approach to infantry, vehicles and aircraft. Looking it up in the instructions booklet, vehicles beat infantry, infantry beat aircraft, aircraft beat vehicles. But there are exceptions, some units are specialised to fight against the rock paper scissors ordering, and hunters are one such exception I believe.

I believe you're right on this being one of the exceptions that makes the rule. Hunters can't shoot at aircraft in HW1 from what I remember so send the flyers in after them.

Thanks for the advice guys! I have successfully completed the normal campaign. I averaged a Silver score on most of them, but I want to go back and achieve 100% Gold before trying it on Heroic.

That being said, I did feel like the story was kind of rushed, but that might be just me. It was exciting to see another Dyson sphere, and a not-as-welcome visit from the Flood. Does Halo Wars 2 pick up right after this one?

Halo Wars 2 follows the same characters years after the events of HW1, but not that long for them due to cryo sleep. It's mostly a standalone story.

Also Halo Wars 2 seems to be required reading for understanding Halo Infinite based on the trailers we've seen. The campaign is pretty good on it's own but the DLC sections are much better in my opinion so if you can find them on sale, do the thing!

I'll be following this because I too have ventured into these games after putting them off. Was never a fan of over the top game play but now I enjoy it.

Halo Wars had amazing cutscenes and was fun to play. Was only my second RTS. My first was Populous the Beginning. From what I remember, I recommend keeping your main vehicle back and always build up your bases. Want air vehicles spread out around your main base as protection. Tanks beat everything also. Not much help I know but that's how I got things done. Good luck and have fun

Honestly only the second RTS game I've ever played, but still massively fun. The tutorial is pretty helpful for explaining what unit beats what as it doesnt go off of usual Halo logic (Hunters getting shredded by Warthogs or Scorpions etc...) each unit has a specific strength and weakness. It takes some getting used to, but one of the better storylines I've come across so far!
