So im bored, my mom is having me take a practice GED test right now and i got to wondering if anyone else is homeschooled here? and for how long?

i started in the 4th grade and am now a senior.

I home school my kids. They are 10 and 12. They both have genius IQ's(they definitely didn't get that from me), so traditional schooling is out of the question.

Public school in the US has gone to crap in the past few years, so you may be getting a better education. I went to public school and was home schooled for 3 hours afterward each day(my mom was a teacher), so I kind of know what you are feeling.

I am kinda. I do history and english(and spanish) at home, while going to IU for math and physics.

I WISH I'd been homeschooled. I was lucky enough to go to a very good public school until my freshman year. They had amny great teachers and offered a plethora of classes from honors to AP. They also had a 'gifted' program called Gateway, which I was a part of. You had to get a certain score on our end of year tests (on all material from 1st-12th grades) to get in and then take an IQ test. It was great, but after moving away I do realise how much US schools are going to the dumps. I go to 'the best school in the county' and it sucks. Honestly, half the teachers can't (and don't) actually teach. They don't offer near as many advanced classes. The only reason I don't have good grades, is cus I kind of stopped caring. I'm more interested in just getting out of highschool and into college right now. College,is a whole different ballgame, but a slightly better one. Besides, all my homeschooled friends have already finished highschool and are working on college. I can't find an online highschool or I'd use it, it'd be much better than my highschool. But TN has such stupid laws on homeschooling. My friend is homeschooled and he's in algerbra I as a junior because his dad homeschooled him,but it doesn't count. Why? Because his dad doesn't have a teaching degree. Even though his dad is a math major, they won't take it. [/rant]

Okay I'll get of my soapbox.....I have to get ready for school, anyway.I feel much better, now.

Way to go! Its not easy sometimes (watch out for advance Algebra)
my biggest problem is math. Saxon Mixes algebra, geometry and trig in each book. algebra i can do. geometry i rock. trig.........i dont comprehend. it seems like every lesson contradicts the last one.

Last year i started taking 2 electives at the high school, i took comp repair, drafting 2 and cad 2. this year powerdrive and an independent cad study

I know man! i would be the exact same. Lol. I'm at an adverage school atm, and i got into a bit of trouble in the few last weeks of school last year and was threatened to be put into a private school. TBH my parent's wouldn't know jack $hit about teaching! LOL my mum is so hopeless, she asked me how to spell remember the other day... it's imbarressing.

a few of my friends take cyber school, but im glad i go to public school. Its not just about learning to me, even though we are always pressured to get good grades, I go because i am learning to learn, not learning to take the tests. I could honestly care less about what i get, as long as i learned something.

That, and i get classes i could never do at home, chemistry being one of them. Light sh!t on fire! What a class!

If you are home-schooling or getting home schooled, its actually not too different from public schooling, except for the social factor and the experiences you get.

No dis's on home school kids but homeschooling can hinder your future if you want to go to big colleges and play ncaa stuff, also having a GED rather than graduating high school doesn't look good either. but the advantage is quality of learning (one on one) and speed (no stupid kids holding you back.) And what I said before only apply to the people not using online school which works smoother.

yes, please elaborate. i know alot of home schooled kids here in Atlanta that are much MUCH smarter than the average B student at my private school. my cousin was homeschooled and he got into Stanford just fine

Well I'm at a very good school, and I'm glad I am not homeschooled. The ammount of new friends I got with school is amazing compared to staying in my neighborhood.

well, mostly what I trying to point out is that if you want to play ncaa sports, it will be harder to do. As for quality of edu its way better. although running start is also better but it is a bit off topic :p

yea its hard to concentrate when your armor is five feet away. i loved sleeping in. now that im taking classes at the high school to not anymore. i have a 2nd period class. go to work for 2 hours, go back for my 5th period class. go back to work for 2.5 hours and then go home and do my homeschool stuff. it get crazy but i stay busy so i like it. i use to hate the lack of social life but i dont think i would have made it in public school (to a.d.d to sit in class) and love it now. as far as collage i had no problems getting in to the tech school im going to next year.

i hate public school today, i wish i were homeschooled

all the kids around here are wannabe gang bangers, it's almost suicide going to my school day after day

I was home schooled from pre-school, through my Senior year. Yep, that's right: Every year of my life I was home schooled. Did that hinder me in any way? Heck no! I have great friends and have a good social life. The idea that us homeschoolers are sad kids locked in a closet is so far from the truth.

I also don't have my GED, I have a real diploma. Though I was home schooled, I went through a private school that allowed home schooling. So to a Univeristy, it will appear as if I graduated from a school in California, even though I live in Ohio. :)

If I could go back to first grade again, I'd chose home schooling over public or private school any day. I got to stay in a close and good relationship with my parents and siblings (Twin brother and older sister who were also home schooled). It was fun and I don't regret a day of it. :)

I was home schooled from kindergarten till I graduated and I would have it no other way, home schooling was by far the best thing that my parents could have ever done for me and my siblings in my opinion. I absolutely loved sleeping in, getting to play outside whenever I wanted, not have to get out of your pajamas all day long, as far as the kids point of view goes it is amazing. As far as the education goes, at least here in Texas any home school is counted as a private school because there are no regulations on what private schools have to teach. So, when I was done with all of my home schooling I walked away with a HS diploma just as anyone else who went to public or private school in Texas would (I know this isn't the same for every state). I got into college without any problems at all, I finished with honors and I am starting med school here in the fall. My younger brother, who was also home schooled, had the same experience and started his freshman year at Rice in Houston and is doing great.

I never lacked for social events because I was in YMCA soccer, did horse back riding lessons and competitions, etc. And i will also say this, my schooling was very basic, we did Math Reading and Writing. Very little of anything else in a structured sense. All of my liberal education came from the discovery channel, museums, trips to the zoo, etc. One of the things I learned right off the bat, is that when I went to college all I had to be able to do was know how to learn. Until I got into my senior classes, I never had to use anything that wasn't taught to be that semester, it was just regurgitation so long as I knew how to absorb what I read, write it down in a concise manor, and know the math to solve the problems on the board.

My wife went to an amazingly good public school where she was born in Mi, but had to finish her senior year in another school and hated it with a passion. When our first little rug rats come along we are in total agreement being from two different ends of the spectrum, we are home schooling our kiddos no doubt about it.

More than anything else though, one of the things I was happiest about in being home schooled is that, schooling at home you learn and love to learn. In all of my friends and observations about High School, you learn to fit in to a specific demographic and to give into the masses. (I know I have a slanted opinion and not trying to offend anyone, just the way I see it. Doesn't make it true, just what I observe.)

Okay, I don't know how bad school's are in america, but here in europe, they're damn good, it would be EXTREMELY hard for any one person to teach you the stuff we get. all our teachers have to study there subject, so your physics teacher knows what he's talking about, and so does the art teacher.

Then again, it's not only about teaching subjects. In my experience, school's main lesson is that "life's hard. get over it or fail". Also, you family will NEVER be able to give you the amount of different opinions which you get in school, and understanding different opinions is vital.

That being said, as a parent I'd "home school" my kids in so far, that I'd teach them stuff which isn't taught in public schools and revise with them. Best of both worlds. But I consider that to be the normal duty of a parent anyway... in Germany and England, I think kids have to visit school, and that's a good thing for most. I mean, you get away from your family, and that's not a bad thing either.

EDIT: @PhantomSG13: nice John Wayne quote, is it not? :D
