Is Fiberglass Needed?

I was resining today and put some resin in the inside of my helmet without fiberglass. To find out that it is still hard.
But being my first time idk if that's as hard as it's suppose to be with one layer.
Anyways, I was just wondering if you just put resin on a pepakura helmet would it turn out the same, with enough layers, without fiberglass just maybe a little weaker?

I can't say for sure since I'm not an expert but the fiberglass will strengthen it quite a bit. Just resin and you'll be asking for trouble IMO. With the resin and glass you will have a product that will hold up to more abuse. I wouldn't skip the glass.

None of it is really necessary per say, but your armor will look a lot better and last longer if you take the time to do it! Hope you are wearing the proper safety equipment, too!

it depends how much resin you have been using

can we see a picture of the inside of it?

i remember for my calfs, i literally poured some resin into the kneecap part and it was hard as a rock, thats without fibreglass, but if youre just talking about basic thinlayers, fibreglass is reccomended, but not crucial, can keep going without it, personally im testing out a new technique by hardening with cardboard and glue, and it works well

but if you can tell me how much resin you used, or show me a pic of the inside, ill be able to help you

Well if u would add like 4 or more layers of just resin it will become strong enough to be a pretty durable armor. But i suggest that if you can use it that you use fibreglass, becouse it will defenetly strengthen it, and i guess buying some fibreglass is cheaper then buying loads of resin

If I remember correctly, resin by itself is brittle/may shatter if dropped or such. Fiberglass will help prevent that. Of course, you could PROBABLY skip fiberglassing altogether if you're careful with the piece.

Resin without fiberglass is very brittle. If you didn't fiberglass the helmet and dropped it, it would shatter.

When i first resend my halo one marine helmet i put a layer of resin on the outside and it seemed pretty thin so i glassed the inside.

and i'm really glad i did because now its as hard as rock...well not quite rock but it's sturdy enough to make me confidant it won't break.

I advise glassing the inside and resining the outside.

Yeah, that would suck, all that work and nothing to show for it...

I'll post a picture when I'm done because I don't really like showing my work tell its done. Except for that one video i made.

I didn't 'glass my helmet. Just resin. I couldn't glass it because I didn't know how far I was going to have to sand down, and I didn't want to try and sand through cloth. It's been pretty good to me so far. (Granted, I haven't dropped it... yet.)

But I plan on molding it so the strength of this original piece isn't vital to me.

Check out my sig for a link to my progress thread for pics.

I have a question that is relevant to this thread.

Is is necessary to glass the hand plates? Wouldn't a layer of resin inside and out suffice? Or maybe a layer of resin outside and some cardboard and hot glue on the inside?

would would happen if you skipped the resin and just glassed it??
You resin it when you glass it, so it doesnt really matter.
