Well, I guess I about to take the first step on this amazing journey. All I've decided that this point is that I'm going an ODST build. I really don't know if I want to do a specific character build or something original. But one thing I do want is an assault rifle. I looked around for 3D models and found this one on thingiverse.

Just wondering if anyone has printed this particular model and what your opinion is? Is this a good model or would you recommend a different model? Any and all opinions welcome.

I haven't printed this one but it looks like it's pretty good for a small size printbed. The only downside for this one is going to be the number of pieces (loads of sanding) and the suggested print orientation (pieces on end, more sanding).

My one suggestion for this print is if you have Meshmixer or another preferred modelling program, add slots for internal rods for strength and assembly pins to help alignment.

First progress photos from my Halo ODST build. Being my first foam build I’m still perfect technique. I had some trouble getting the angle cuts for the lower back piece just right, but thanks to some help from brkiker @geekoutstudio it turned out perfect! Next steps is to make all of the armor pieces and make sure it all fits together. At that point I’ll cleanup the edges and seems. Last photo are pieces I’ve 3D printed. I’m especially happy with how well the shoulder armor turned out.

And some picks of humble beginnings...

Last week was my on-call week so I didn’t get as much done on the costume as I’d like. I wasn’t happy with how the base was fitting so I trimmed about a half inch from the front and back on both sides. Not only did this tighten it up, but also changed the shape slightly. I’m much happier with the fit now. I then sanded all of the edges and seams. I did manage to get the side armor panels done and started work on the back detail. I also got the buckles and one forearm printed.

I managed to get the ODST armor pieces mounted this past week. The only major pieces left are the shoulder straps. I’ve been sick the past several days so I haven’t had the opportunity to work on them yet...hopefully I’ll get over this cold and get them done this week.

The ODST torso armor is complete! Finished the shoulder straps and the 3D printed buckles and finalized the side attachment for easily putting on and taking off the armor. There is still some minor touch ups and seem filling to do, but it’s essentially done. Now to move on to finishing the shoulder armor and forearms.

are all your chest pieces velcrod on? or just the stomach plate? I just contact cemented mine on lol.

We have paint! The ODST is finally starting to take shape. The primary (Khaki) and secondary (Dark Steel) color base coats are done. I also did a simple highlight coat on the primary (Warm Grey). Next up will be the accent color, more highlights, and decals. Then I can get to weathering.

Finally started in the accent color on the ODST and applying decals. Unfortunately I ran out of white ink (thought I had another tape) so it’ll be a week before I can finish them. I also did a little distressing with sand paper. Next I’ll be applying the edge highlights and shading.

Happy New Year! My first post of the new year is a progress update on my ODST. I created and applied the remaining decals and did the first-pass of weathering. I am very happy with how this is evolving. Up next is an overall wash and shading, a final weathering pass, and then the final details such as the straps.

Wow! Happy new year dude

That is some very clean foam work for your first try! What approach are you taking for the helmet? Pep? Foam? Buying a cast?

Looking great!
