We have all laughed and joked about being told that we're fat and need to lose weight but I was gobsmacked when it [Wii Fit] told her that she is overweight. She is a healthy 10 year old girl with an active lifestyle, she swims and dances every week. She is 92lbs and 4ft9" tall and there is not an inch of fat on her. She is solidly built but not fat. She was devasted to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her that she isn't. I know it is just a game but seriously we already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like the magazine models and now we have a game that tells them their fat. This to me is very worrying and I hope that is doesn't cause emotional problems for any youngsters out there :(

From kotaku.com

Nintendo's known as a good and quality company, so why'd they make a piece of equipment that tells healthy people they are fat?

Heh, lay off the twinkies little one. j/k

Anyways, it's just a game, don't let it "hurt" your feelings ..

The game measures Body Mass Index, based on height and weight. The game doesn't know the difference between how much fat weighs compared to how much lean muscle weighs.

Some Bimbo back in college tried to tell me I was 25% fat. I wanted to take her dumb device nd bash her skull in. I only weigh 115lbs and I was in shape, so 28lbs of me was fat?? PHBBBT!

You also measure inches not pounds when it comes to losing weight.

Though I can see how this could damage a kiddo's mind set :(

What's funny is, based on this specs this person wrote the BMI is not considered healthy and not overweight. Maybe Nintendo just figured it would call everyone fat that way we would lose some weight. HA!

According to Body Mass Index, Tom Brady is overweight. Just thought I'd let you all know that. Sorta funny in my opinion.

Maybe if he would have lost some weight, he would have not been humiliated in the Super Bowl! :D

Actually. After some scientific research, they predicted that playing on the wii, you will only loose about a quarter of a mars bar worth of claories every hour...Thats like..A Marsbar every 4 hours. Where as doing some real sport you will lose almost four times that.

Some guy wrote a book about how he is losing weight playing wii boxing, i guess it works, but real boxing, the calorie burning effects cant be replicated in a video game.

Bmi is also determined by age averages. if you tell the machine that your five one and 100 pounds but only 9 years old, they computer knows by studies that most 9 year olds dont have all that much muscle, so it will say that he/she is overweight....and if the wii fit uses the word FAT, i think that is wrong. Overweight might be better, There are obese children out there but using a word with such a negative connotation could cause them to get more depressed and therefore more un-healthy

Yea, the Wii board is cute n fun, but it lacks a BIA, or bioelectrical impedance analysis. Scales with BIA's send a small electrical pulse through your body in order to discriminate between weight derived from water, muscle, and fat. Since the Wii Board cannot do this, it's overgeneralizing people based on the old, overgeneralized BMI scale and making them cry. Which, *is* hilarious. People should know better than to look to their Wii for self-worth XD

Oh and if anyone is curious about normal body composition and fat %:

Ideal weight and fat-lean ratio varies considerably for men and women and by age, but the minimum percent of body fat considered safe for good health is 5 percent for males and 12 percent for females. The average adult body fat is closer to 15-18 percent for men and 22-25 percent for women.

Overweight people tend to have 30%+ . Yikes! 1/3 is a scary thought no?

A 100lb's is a lot for a 10 year old girl..

-Fin(n)ish

EDIT: And since she is a girl and not yet a teenager she propably doesnt have alot of muscles.
Because the muscle structures only start growing when a human reaches pubarty age.

EDIT EDIT: >>Vexona, the normal amount of fat is around 25%, For top athletes it's around 8%
And that means training a hell of a lot each day.. (remember 0% fat isnt good either)

Its not alot according to her BMI. Usually if BMI is wrong it will say your fat when your really just muscular. So in short she's probably not fat.

Did you read my edit? Before a individual reaches puperty age the muscles are VERY minimium..
It's just impossible for a litte girl to actually have alot of muscles at that age (unless she would be a body builder..)

She might not be fat tough, there is alot of things wich effect the weight, Density of bone structure etc..
But i hihly doubt that "muscles" would be the case.

25% body fat is right on the verge between "normal" and "fit" for women.

Before I started working about about 6 weeks ago, i was at 23% body fat, and the reason I started working out was because I was overweight.

Men
'Fit' range: 14-17%
'Athletic' range: 10-13%
'Elite Athlete' range: 4-9%

Women
'Fit' range: 21-14%
'Athletic' range: 16-20%
'Elite Athlete' range: 12-15%

I do think it's dumb that Wii Fit doesn't take into account more than height/weight/gender (or whatever). To calculate true body fat, you need to take a bunch of measurements all over your body. But I guess it's worked for this guy.

(off topic, but I totally missed my 500th post... :( )

I can see the whole range for men and women differing. It is scientifically proven that most women do have a higher body fat percentage than men, but that is for many other needed things. (Men can't go through child birth).

I don't think Elite Athlete ranges are that high actually. My body fat percentage is about 8% right now, and I'm about 5'10", and about 140lbs (63Kg for my country), and people think I'm a twig.

Also, the whole girl saying nintendo called her overweight DOESN'T MEAN SHE'S ACTUALLY FAT. It just means that her body type is actually larger than a regular person her size, or she has a higher muscle to body fat ratio.
