I'm not going to say this isn't a good cause, because I think, in some of the cases, it is.
There's a bullet point on that website that talks about some children (and adults, I would say) having foot problems because they're walking on volcanic soil.
Yikes!
However, as far as shoes go... You have to think about how reliant we've become on these types of things. Back when humanity was no more than hunter-and-gatherers, they didn't have shoes or boots. Callouses built up on the soles of their feet, and they were able to cross a multitude of terrains with no problem.
Even today, you have children who go outside in the summer barefoot, toughen up their feet, and before you know it they're running on gravel!
Like I said, I'm not trying to knock the effort here... I'm just kind of thinking out loud.
