Note: I believe this only works on Windows.

So after I bought Halo 3, I decided to begin modding Halo PC (not CE, that always crashes my computer). I wanted to do some skinning with GIMP (I didn't want to download the Photoshop Trial) but I found that the DDS plugin did not work for HMT.

So I downloaded the pspi plugin to run Photoshop plugins in GIMP, and I downloaded the Photoshop DDS plugin, but of course it gave me a billion errors.

I found through trial and error that the real way to save with GIMP's DDS plugin was to use BC1 / DXT1 compression.
So now, how to do it:

Skinning in GIMP Tutorial
1. Save your HMT texture.
2. Download the GIMP DDS plugin here.
3. Copy dds.exe and paste it in GIMP-2.0/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins (I assume you know how to get there from Program Files).
4. Run GIMP and open your HMT texture (I used the warthog).
5. IMPORTANT! Delete all layers starting with 'mipmap' as these will be created later.
6. When you have edited it, click 'Save As' and hit save. A dialog will pop up. Change Compression to BCT1/DXT1 and check Generate Mipmaps. Click OK.
7. Open HMT and inject your texture (if a dialog pops up hit No.)
