Since I have noticed an increase of spam posts lately, I thought I'd write a quick topic about what spam is, for those of us who do it, but don't realize it.

What is spam?

This thread is not about this Spam:

But more along the lines of this Spam:

Yes, believe it or not, this is spam. Basically, forum spam is most commonly seen here as newer members trying to get themselves out of the Noob Forum and into the normal forums. This isn't smart, because eventually, you'll get really aggravating, and finally, banned. No one wants to see the B&Hammer, so try not to get it slammed on you. If you really want to get out of this forum, try posting in people's topics with RELEVANT information, and give your opinions on others armor and/or ideas. Anyways, back to spam.

Spam is also a hassle for the staff here on the 405th, as well as other forums. Check this small paragraph from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia > Forum spam > Effects of spam said:
Spam prevention and deletions measurably increase the workload of forum administrators and moderators. The amount of time and resources spent keeping a forum spam free contributes significantly to labour cost, and the skill required in the running of a public forum. Marginally profitable or smaller forums may be permanently closed by administrators. Forums that do not require registration are becoming rare.

Spam topics are also a problem. Basically, if you post a topic that has nothing to do with that particular board or forum, it's spam. The Noob Forum is an exception, of course, seeing as this is the only place you can post new topics. If you're not sure whether you are posting spam or not, it's probably best to not post it at all. Also, it is considered spamming if you post a topic asking a question that has already been asked and/or can be found relatively quick in the stickies. If you are not sure if your question has been asked before or not, try using this:

search405th.png

Search for your question, and if you don't find it (this doesn't mean in the first 3 or 4 pages, do so searching and don't be lazy!), go ahead and ask it!

Also, anything that causes the page to stretch can be considered spam. When you have a sig, try to make it no more than 500 px wide, at least, that's about the average limit on most forums I go to, not too sure about here. Just try to be polite to our fellow members who may be operating on a lower resolution.

Also, flamming is bad, mkay.[/South Park] If you want to give your opinion on something, by all means give it! But be respectful and try not to bash other member's opinions. Flamming is usually looked down upon, so try not to do it.

I hope this helps some of the newer members who aren't sure about what's spam and what's not. Feel free to add anything, and mods, lock/delete if you wish. :)

...Or Guiness:lol:

I like! Although I agree with LastSpartan about the putting of it on the registration page. Then a short QUIZ!!! Then you can put "I GOT __% ON THE REGISTRATION QUIZ!" in your sig.

Sweeeet

I'm not totally sure, but I think it's impossible to put it on the registration page, lol

That would be cool if you could. Seriously once we get more serious we should have member agreements. I just wish people would look harder for things. I seriously think almost everything has been asked once if you just took the time to search EVERY forum. Not just the top 2 and say you couldn't find it....Yeah. My thoughts. Oh well!

I totally agree, I've seen at least 20 topics that ask "how do u do pep?" when there is a sticky in the Pepakura and Cardboard section titled HOW TO USE PEPAKURA TO MAKE YOUR MJOLNIR ARMOR.

This is why we need a sort of 'entrance test' for people to read the stickies before they have their posting privileges given. They can lurk and such and have an account, but can't actually post until they proove that they know their stuffz.

Just a suggestion.

Hmm, now only if we had a way to force new members to read this....

When they sign up, have a quiz at the end before they're allowed to start posting?!?

If only it were possible. I mean, if you think about it, it would be rather hard to manage all of them. If there was a way to do it, it would be awesome, but if I am not mistaken, it might be hard. I'm not too sure, not really used to the IP.Board system...

ah, getting noobs to read is a paramount task. They ask first, then read never.

this does deserve to be stickificationized. Or, if its really necessary, merge with Doom's topic on how to not get banned.

spam bad. logic good. :p

nice topic / explanation

Well, in my opinion, flaming/spamming go hand and hand... and that's probably why I made a low grade in English this year :D
